LENABD MICHAEL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK. ASSIGNOR T0 AMERICAN CAN COM- PANY, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPOMTON 0F NEW JERSEY.
CNTANER.
Application lcd June 5, 1922. Serial No. 565,877.
To all Hwm imag concern.'
Be it known that l, LEONARD MicnAnL, a citizen of the United States. residing vin Brooklyn. in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesin general to tearing strip cans and has more particular reference to cans of large size and where it would be inconvenient or impracticableto wind astrip from the entire circumference of the body in a single roll upon a key.
An important object of the invention -is the provision of a side opening 'tearing strip canso constructed and arranged that cans of large diameter may be conveniently and expeditiously opened.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of a can of this character, which may be manufactured without Another'important object of the invention is the provision of a key for use with such cans and others which may receive separate strip parts together constituting the entire encircling strip and retain them after open- Other objects and advantages of the 1nvention will be apparent as it 1s better un` derstood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accom- `pan ing drawings, disclosesa preferred embodiment thereqf.-
0n the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a can embodying my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a. similar view taken from the opposite side and-after the initial steps 1n the opening of the can have been made;
Fig. 3 is a. 1an view of a blank adapted for the manugcture of the body of. the can shown in Figs. 1 and 2; p
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken horizontally through the tearing strips in Figs. 1 and 2; and '\'=1--- Fig. 5 is a key.
ent invention I have shown on the drawing a large diameter can, in which it is embodied This can com rises in the present eet metal body 11 formed of a blank as shown in Fig. 3, preferably of tin-plate, and has its side edges seemed together at 12. A tonguel extends beyond thisv seam at one point and is .ar-
ranged between two encircling score lines 14. t a pointcircumferentially remote 4from the seam 12 a transverse scoring 15 is provided aeross thestrip area between the score Alines14. A tongue 16 is arranged in the present instance within the container and is soldered at 17 to the strip area of the blank before the body is formed, the tongue eX'- tending over behind the transverse scoring l in thesame angular-direction as the tongue 13.
'Referring to Fig. 5, reference character 18 indicates a key differing from the ordinar)7 hey in the provision of two flattened portions in each of which is provided a tongue receiving slot 2l. When it is desired to open the can the slot nearer the handle 2;) ot' the key is threaded over the tongue 13 and the key turned to remove a strip from between the points a-b, the direction of 1novement beine a clockwise one, and up over the top in Fig. When the strip severing reaches the point Z), i. e. the score line 15, the strip tears away. Thereafter the tongue 16 is bent out and threaded into the slot 21 more remote from the handle 22 and the winding severing strip removing action repeated to remove the strip part located between the points ba, movement being in the same angular direction. k
lt is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the linvention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
l claim: y
1. A tearing strip can. comprising a body having a pair of score lines encircling it, a plurality of tongues arranged between said scores-lines andsadapted to-.beI successively l engaged to permit successive removal of For the purpose of illustrating my presa body ranged between said score lines.
' 3. A tearing strip can, comprisin provided with a plurality of score es and Cil . lines, a transverse scoring across the area between said score lines, and tongues permltting independent removal of the strip parts set o by said score lines and von vthe opposite sides of said transverse scoring.
6. A tearing strip can,A comprising a scored body with a tear away areal and a plurality of tongues arranged at intermediate points of the length of said area.
7. A tearing strip can, comprising a plurality of successively severable tearing strip part-s arranged circumferentially of the can,
tearing'strip tongues for saidJ parts, and a' key adapted to successively engage said tongues. Y
8. A tearing strip can, comprisinga plul rality of successively sever-able tearing strip parts arranged circumferentially of the can,
tearing strip tongues for saidparts, and a key adapted to successively engage said tongues and carrying a. removed tearing strip part when engaging the second tongue.
9. A blank for a. can,'co1nprising a sheet metal member having parallel score lines extending throughout its length, andV a transverse score line across the area between said parallel score lines, anda tongue secured to said blank between said parallel score lines and extending across said transverse score lines.
l0. A blank for a can, comprising a sheet metal member havin parallel score lines exlending throughout. its length, and a transverse score line. across the area between said parallel score lines, a tongue extending outfrom the area between said parallel score lines at one end and a second tonguesecured to the area between said parallel score lines andY at said transverse score line and extending in the direction of the vfirst mentioned tongue.
l1. A tearing strip .can2 comprising a scored body adapted topbe opened by severance; and a plurality of tearing striptongues arranged at intermediate points of the strip to be removed.
