To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B, HOLDEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to typewriting machines and more particularly to so-called portable machines intended to be inclosed and transported in a carrying case.
lVhen a typewriting machine is carried about there is danger of injury to, and per haps breakage of, parts of the escapement mechanism due to the fact that the weight of the carriage comes on the feed dogs unless special provision is made to provide against it, and the force of the jars or jolts to which the machine may be subjected comes against the feed dogs with the consequent liability of injury.
One of the objects of my invention is to overcome this difliculty.
A second object of the invention is to insure the proper positioning of the carriage preparatory to inclosing the machine within its case.
A. still further object of my invention is to provide improved means whereby in attaining this last mentioned result the carriage will be released from the restraint of its escapen'icnt, and thus at the same time accomplish the first mentioned object.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts and con'ibinations of devices set forth in the following description and particular pointed out in the appended claims.

I have shown my invention in the present instance embodied in a Remington portable machine, many of the features of which are shown in the following patents and pending applications: A. IV. Smith, Pat. No. 1,342,- 513, dated June 8, 1920; J. B. Holden, Pat. No. 1,386,256, dated Aug. 2, 1921; J. B. Holden, app. Sr. No. 469,458, filed May 14, 1921; J. B. Holden, app. Sr. No. 541,355, filed Mch. 6, 1922; J. B. Holden, app. Sr. No. 330,747, filed Oct. 15, 1919; G. A. Seib, app. Sr. No. 529,415, filed Jan. 16, 1922, It should he understood, however, that the invention is not restricted to embodiment in a machine of this style.
From certain aspects of my invention it is in the nature of improvements on the construction disclosed in my above men tioned application, Sr. No. 330,747.
The Remington portable machine is provided with a carrying case, the cover of which can be closed only when collapsible parts of the machine are moved to compact relation with the remainder of the machine and when the carriage is properly centered on its support, as pointed out in my above mentioned application, Sr. No. 330,747. In said application means are also disclosed for compelling the operator to free the carriage from restraint of its escapement mechanism before the machine can be inclosed within its case. By my present invention I provide improved means for locking the carriage in its centered position which must necessarily be actuated before the case can be closed, and combined with such means devices whereby when a member or s.:id l =.l-L
is moved to effective position the carriage will vbe released from restraint of its escapeihent, and when said locking member is moved to ineli'ective position the escapement will be rendered effective to restrain the carriage. This allords 'an' assurance" not only that the carriage will be released from and restored to control of the escapement at the proper intervals to secure these results, but it also aii'ords an assurance that the carriage lock will be actuated to lock and to release the carriage at the proper intervals. The outer sheet metal frame 1 of the machine contains an inner sheet metal frame 2 by which various working parts of the machine are supported. Among such parts is a carriage sup-porting case'shiit' frame, such as is illustrated in my above mentioned Patent No. 1,386,256. This case shift frame comprises a carriage support 3 pivoted at 4 on upright arms 5 secured to a rock shaft 6 pivoted at its ends, as at 7, to the inner frame, so that the carriage support may receive a case shifting movement fore-and-ait of the machine. 7
The carriage support has two grooved guide-rails or plates 8 and 9 secured thereto. These guide-rails contain crossed "bearing rollers 10 thatare received in ways in the rails 8 and 9 and in companion grooved rails or ways 11 and 12'respective1y, formed on the bent edge portions of the main base plate 130i the carriage. This plate has fixed thereto end plates 14 and 15 and such end plates support a platen 16. The carriage is thus mounted to travel from side to'sidc of the machine and support the platen in position to receive the impact of downwardly and rearwardly strili-ing'type bars (not shown) on the upper side'tliereof.
The step-by-step feed movement of the carriage is controlled by escapement'mechanism comprising, in the present' instance, teed dogs 17 and 18 carried by a key controlled dog rocker and engaging teeth 19 of a feed rack 19. The feed rack is carried by a sheet metal plate 20 which has upwardly and forwardly bent arms 21 and 22. The arm 21 is bent at its free end portion to form a pivot bearing 23 "that receives a pivot rod 24 supported in bearings 25 of a bracket which is secured to the base plate 13 of the carriage. The arm 22issecured by a screw 26 to a block 27 apertured to receive a. pivot rod 28 supported in bearings 29 of a bracket plate 30, secured by screws 31 to the base plate 13 of the carriage. Coiled springs surround the pivots 24 and 28, and each bears at one end 33 on the associated bracket plate, and at its other end 34 against the plate 20,-and normally holds the'feed rack in" itseilective or engagcarriage base plate. Fixed at 37 to the lefthand end of the plate 20, is an upwardly and rearwar-dly extending feed rack release arm 38 which terminates in afinger piece 39. A forward 'movement of the finger piece 39 from't-he 'full tothe dotted line posit'ion shown in Fig. 2, is effective to disengage the feed rack 'from the normally engaged feed dog 18','and thus free the carriage from the restraint of its escapement mechanism. The forward movementof the arm 38 to releasing position i'sliniited by aflaterally projecting lug'40 (see Fig. 3) that coacts with a stop 41 formed on the rear edge ofthe end plate 15, as shown in Figs. 1' and 2.
One of the collapsing parts or" the Remington portable machine is the finger wheel 42 which is movable from the dotted line position ofuse, to the'full line compacted position shown in Fig. 3, as pointed out in my hereinbefore mentioned application Sr. No. 330,747." Referring particularly to Fig. 6 it will be seen that the finger wheel 42 is fixed by a screw 43 to a spindle or platen shaft 44 movable longitudinally in the right hand platen head 45, a spline 46 onithe latter extending into a. spline groove 47 in the spindle." A pin '48 on the spindle oo-acts with the spline 46 to limit the outward movement of the spindle and finger wheel,
as shown. A flanged bearing sleeve 49 surrou'nds'the spindle 44, and is supported in an opening in the right-hand end plate 14 of the! carriage. The bearing sleeve 49 is held in place in the opening in the endplate 14 by a washer 50, riveted to the sleeve. The left-hand end portion of the platen spindle is supported in a bearing sleeve 51, fixed in an opening in the left-hand end plate 15. In this manner the platen is mounted in the platen carriage carrier or carriage, and the finger wheel 42 is connected to turn with the platen but may be moved longitudinally of the platen from the full to the dotted line position in Fig. 3, or vice 'versa.
The sleeve 51 has a latei'al lyextending slot 52 cut the-rein to a pointwhere it crosses the bore 53 in the sleeve. A sheet metal locking member or finger is received in the slot 52, and has a movement therein transversely of the spindle 44 from the position shown in Fig. 1, to that indicated in Fig. 2, or vice versa. hen a finger wheel is in the expanded or dotted line position, shown in Fig. 3, the left-ham end of the spindle, indicated at 44 in said figure. is positioned just to the right of the lateral slot It. therefore, at this time the locking linger 54 be in the position shown in Fig. 2, it will prevent the spindle from mov ing to the left and will lock the linger wheel against movement to its compacted position shown in Fig. 3.
In the present instance the locking member 54 constitutes part of a sheet metal member. designated as a whole by the reference numeral its will be seen upon reference to Fig. at. this member is pivoted on the shank of a interiorlv threaded. headed. screw so screwed onto a shoulder screw 5? that passes through an opening in the end plate 15. A rearwardlv extending arm of this member 5:; terminates in a linger piece 58, by which the member is turned on its pivot. Th s finger piece is bent laterally to the right from the arm which carries it. so as to extend back of the carriage release arm 38, as shown in Figs. 1 and '3. It follows that a forward movement of the linger piece 58 from the Fig. 2 to the Fi 1 position will carrv the arm 38 with it. tnns disengaging the leed racl; l9 from the nm'mallv engaged dog 18 as shown. and for purposes which will here nafter appear. "his same movement of the linger piece carries the locle ing linger 54 to the releasing position shown in Fig. 1. The spindle it being no longer locked against endwise movement enables the finger wheel 42 to be moved to the full line or con'ipacted position. shown in Fig. 3. The part 55 also carries a locking linger or device (32, which constitutes one member of a lock for locking the carriage n a centralized position on its support 3, as shown in Fig. 1. This finger 62 registers with a slot 6? in the base plate 13 ot' the carriage, and is adapted to be moved through said slot at any point in the travel of the carriage from the ineffective pos'tion shown in Fig. 2 to the ellective position shown in Fig. 1. In this last mentioned position the lower edge portion of the locking finger 62 extends into cooperative relation with a companion locking member carried hv the carnage supocrt Fl. it. at this time. the t'zli'lttt is i h.
moved in either direction ol its travel from an ell-centered position, the locking memhers will coact when the carriage reaches the centralized position on its support, and wi l automaticallv lock the carriage against movement trom such position in either di rection. The companion locking member on the support 3 is shown detached in Fig. 5, and. in the present instance comprises a strip of spring metal 63 fastened by a head ed screw 64 to the under side of the support 3, the stem of the screw passing through an opening 65 in the lock'ng member. From one edge of the strip 63 is bent an upwardly extending detent 66 having a slot or recess (57 therein. The upper edge of the detent is beveled downwardl and outwardly in opposite directions from the side walls of the recess 67, as indicated at 68. The dctent (as projects up through a slot (39 in the left-hand end portion of the support 3. so that the beveled edge portions 68 of the detent e);- tend above the. upper side of the member 51. and are normally mainta ned in such posh tion by the inherent resilienc or spring pressure of the strip (53. The construction is such that when the locking linger (32 is in the etlective position, and the carriage is moved in either direction towards a centrah ized position. it will bring the lower edge of the finger against one or the other of the two hevels (38 and llex the detent downward. lVhen the centralized position. shown in Fig. 3, is reached the recess ti? will register with the linger ($2 and the detent tit will spring upwardly so as to engage the locking linger on both sides by the side walls of the recess. and thus prevent a movement ol' the carriage in either direction. This is the condition of the machine for use. and from what has been said above it will be iuiderstood that this condition of the machine must be changed before it can be inclosed within its carrying case. One such change of condition is to movethe finger wheel 4-2 to the full line position in Fig. 15. But before this can be. actOl'l'lpllSliQtl it is necessary to move the member by its finger piece 58 to the Fig. 1 position, in order to move the locking finger 54- out of the path of the spindle ii to which the finger wheel is attached. The finger piece 58 must therefore be moved as stated in order that the linger wheel may be pushed in. This movement of the wheel is effective to project the spindle in the path of the locking finger 54 and hold or lock the member 55 against return movement from the Fig. 1 position to which it has been shifted. The described shifting of the member 55 to the Fig. 1 position also results in moving the locking member 2 to effective position and causes the release arm 38 to be moved forward and release the feed rack .1), thus freeing the carriage from restraint of its escapement mechanism. Being thus freed the carriage moves to the left under the power of its spring drum (not shown) until the carriage is centered on its support, when the member 62 will be automatically engaged by its detent (i6 and lOtlI the carriage in its centered position. Should the member (32 happen to be to the left of the detent (it; when the carriage is released as described, the carriage will run to the extreme left hand position of its travel unless restrained. The operator of course knows that the cover cannot be closed when the carriage is in this position, and moves it to the right. lVhen the centralized position is reached the member 62 automatically engages its detent (it; as described, and the carriage is locked in this position against lUOVtll'iOfit in either direction.
So far as the construction under consideration is concerned the machine is now in condition for portability or to be inelosed within its case. and the cover may be closed without further obstruction and the machine transported therein. Any shocks or jolts to which the machine is subjected While Within the case can result in no injury to the escapement mechanism, since at this time the carriage is disconnected and free from restraint of its escapement and is held by the lock 6266.
When the cover is removed and the machine is to be placed in condition for use. it is merely necessary to move the linger wheel 42 from its compacted position to the dotted lines position shown in Fig. his results in withdrawing the spindle ii from the path of the finger 54', and the spring so, with the added force of the springs 32, will move the member 55 to the Fig. 2 position. This results in re-engaging the feed rack with the feed dog 18, and withdrawing the locking member 62 to ineffective position. The machine now again in condition for use.
It will be understood from the foregoii'ig that by reason of the inter-control between a compactible or collapsing part of the machine, the carriage release, and the carriage centering lock, there is no opportunity tor the operator to forget to properly condition the machine for portability before inclosing it, and that the necessary setting of one of these parts (the compactible part) ncccssarily brings about the proper setting of the other parts mentioned, and the proper conditioning of the machine to inclose it, and also to place it in condition for use.
By my invention 1 have provided simple means which have proven effective in use. that compel not only the release of the carriage from restraint of its escapement before the machine can be inclosed in its case. but also compel the proper centering and locle ing of the carriage by the members (Si -tit; before such a result can be obtained. 1 therefore insure a proper conditioning of the machine before it can be inclosed in its case for transportation, and prevent injury to the parts of the machine that might rc sult except for such proper conditioning.
Various changes may be made without dcparting from my invention set forth in the accompanying claims, and certain teatures thereof may be en'iployed without others.
What I claim as new by Letters Patent is 2' 1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage. and in ans for loci:- ing the carriage in a centralized position in its travel along its support. said means coin prising a locking member adapted to be moved from ineffective to effective posi :ion at any point in the travel of the carriage. and when in the effective position to automatically coact with its co-operative loching means during a traveling movement thereof in either direction to lock the carriage, and means for maintaining said locking member indefinitely in its effective position.
2. 4. In a typewriting or like machine. the combination of a carriage. means for locking the carriage in a centralized position on its support including a locking: member movable into and out of effective position. and a positively acting; locking device movably mounted on the carriage and co-o 'wrative with said locking member to hold it in its effective position until said locking device is withdrawn from CO-OPQItltlOH therewith.
5. The combination with a tvpewriting or like machine having: a carriage and a con'ipactible part, of means for locking the carriage in position for portability. releasable means for preventing a movement of said compactible part to compact position, and means controlled by said releasable means for rendering said locking means operative when the releasable means are released and for rendering the locking means inoperative when the releasable means are effective.

In a typewriting machine. the combination of a carriage; means for locking the carriage in a centralized position in its travel along its support. said means comprising a locking: member adapted to be moved from ineffective to effective position at any point in the travel of the carriage and when in the effective position to automatically coact with its co-operative locking means to lock the carriage during a traveling movement thereof in either direction. and means for maintaining. said locking member indefinitely in its effective position: carriage feed devices: and means controlled bv the movement of said locking member to effective position for automatically freeing the carriage from the restraint of its feed devices.
7. The combination with a typewriting or like machine having a carriage. a platen and a finger piece for turninp the platen. and which finger piece is movable into and out of compact relationship. of means for locking the carriage in a centralized position on its support. and means controlled by said finger piece for rendering said locking means ineffective when said finger piece is moved out of its compacted position.
8. The combination with a typewriting or like machine having a carriage and a collapsible part movable indepemlenttv of the arriage, of means for locking the carriage against traveling movement in both diree tions from a centralized position on its support, and means whereby said part is pro vented from being compacted until said locking means is first rendered operative.
9. In a t vpewriting or like machine. the combination of a carriage: escapement mechanism therefor: means for locking the carriage in a centralized position on its support, said means comprising a spring pressed member normally held bv its spring in projected position, and a hand controlled co-operative locking member movable at will into and out of effective position. and when in the effective position adapted by a traveling movement of the carriage in either di rection to interlock with said spring: pressed member and hold the carriage in a centralized position and against traveling movement in either direction: and means for automatically freeing the carriage from the restraint of its escapement mechanism when said hand controlled member is moved to effective position.

The combination with a tvpewritine or like machine having a carriage. escapement mechanism. and a collapsible part. of means for locking the carriage against traveling movement in a centralized position on its support and releasing it from its escapement mechanism. and means to prevent said part from being con'ipacted without rendcn ing said locking means operative and witle out releasing the carriage from restraint otits escapement mechanism.

In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a carriage; means for lock ing the carriage against movement in both directions from a centralized position on its support, including a locking member mow able into and out of etl'ective position; and a shiftable part of the machine which is movable into and out of compact relation ship and has a positivel acting locking device controlled in movement by said shiftable part and (o-operative with said locking member to positively hold it in it etlective position until said locking device is withdrawn from cooperation therewith.
14. In a t vpewriting or like machine, the combination of a :arriage, a platen carried thereby. a finger wheel therefor mounted to be moved from its position of use into a more compact relation, and locking means for locking the carriage against movement on its support, said locking means including a member held in etlective position when the linger wheel is in the compact position and permitted to move to inetlective position by a movement of the linger wheel out of said compact position.
15. In a collapsible t -'pewritin;;' machine, the combination of a carriage; a cmnpactible part; means for locking the carriage against movement including: a locking member movable to cltective or ineliective position; means eti'ective to prevent a compac in of said part when said. locking; member is in the ineffective position and inell'ective to prevent a compacting of said part when said locking member is in the eti'ective post tion; escapement mechanism for the ca riage; and means controlled by said locking member for freeing the carriage from the restraint of its cscapement mechanism.
16. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a compaetible part; a carriage; escapenient mechanism therefor: means for lockino the carriage in a centrah ized position on its support, said means comprising a sprin pressed member normally held by its spring in projected position, and a hand controlled cooperative locking member movable at will into and out of ettective position, and when in the etlective position adapted by a traveling movement of the carriage in either direction to interlock with said spring pressed member and'hold the carriage in a centralized position and against traveling movement in either direc tion; means for automatically freeing the carriage from the restraint of its escapement mechanism when said hand controlled member is moved to etlective position; and means to prevent said compactible part from being moved to compacted position until said cooperative controlling member is moved to etiective position.
17. In a t vpewritingor like machine, the combination of a carriage: cscapement THQCITADISIH therefor; a hand actuated car riage release arm carried by the carriage: means for locking the carriage in a centraL ized position on its support including a hand actuated member carrying a locking linger movable therewith into etiective position at any point in the travel ot the airriage and, engaging its co-operative means during the travel of the carriage in either direction, said member when moving its locking finger to ettective position co -acting also with said releasing arm to free the carriage from the restraint of its escapement mechanism; and a shittable part of the machine movable into and out of compact relationship and having a device which co-acts with said locking finger to prevent a movement of said shiftablc part to compact position until said hand actuated member is moved to render the locking means eti ective and release the carriage.
18. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a carriage, means "for locking; the carriaee in a centralized position on its support including a locking member movable into and out of etlective position; and a shittable part of the machine mov' able from its position of use into compact relationship and having: a device which coacts with said locking member to prevent a movement of said shil'table part to con'ipact position until said locking member is moved into etiective position thus compelling the movement of the locking member into etlew tive position before su h compaction can take place.
19. In a typewritinp or like machine the combination of a carriage escapemeut mechanism therefor, a platen carried by the carriage, a finger wheel for the platen mounted to be moved from its position of use into a more compact relation, locking means for locking the carriage against movement on its support said locking means including a member held in eltective position when the finger wheel is in the comllt pact. position and permitted to move to inetl ective position by a movement of the linger wheel out of said compact posit-ion, and means whereby said locking member is effective to render the escapement mechanism ettective and inettective to rest am the can riage.
20. In a typewritiim machine, the combination oi a platen, a finger \vheel theretor movable into con'ipact relation. a carriage on which said platen is mounted. a device which in one position forms a lock to keep said finger wheel in its outer position. a locking finger on said device for locking the carriage in a centralized position on its support and held in inetlective position when said locking device is in position to keep the tinger wheel in its enter position but projected to elteetive position when sait device is shifted to permit the linger wheel to he moved to compacted position.
21. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a ca 'riage: means for looking the carriage against movement in both directions from a centralized position on its support including a locking member movable into and out of ett'ective position; and a shittable part of the machine movable from its position of use into compact relationship and having an element which co-acts with said locking; member to positively hold the latter in effective position when said shitt able part is in compact position and trees the locking member and permits it to return to ineti'ective position when said shittable part s moved to expanded position of use.
In a t vpewritino' or like machine, the combination of a carriage. escapement mechanism therefor. a platen carried by the carriage. a linger wheel for the platen monnted to be moved from its position of use into a more compact relation, locking" means for locking the carriage against movement on its support. said locking' means including a member held in effective position when the finger wheel is in the compact position and permitted to move to inefiective position by a movement of the linger wheel out of said compact position, and carriage releasing means operated by the movement of said locking member to ettee tivc position to release the carriage from the restraint ot its escapement mechanism and h movement ot' said locking member to inct'tective position to render the escape ment mechanism eti'ective to restrain the carriage.

The combination with the carriage of a typewriting or like machine and its escapement mechanism, of a carriage center lock for holding the carriage indefinitely centered in its line of travel so that the machine may be inclosed within its carryimr case and held against endwise movement in both directions thereon, said center lock comprising two members adapted to interlock one with the other, one of said members being spring supported and adapted to he brought into interlocking engagement by a traveling movement of the carriage to its centered position from either the right or left of said position, one ot said members being spring supported so a; to snap into engagement with its companion member, hand controlled means operable at will for moving one of said members transversely of the line of travel of the carriage and for holding it indefinitely in either the eltective or inellective position, so that the lock may be maintained indefinitely etl ective or ineffective, and means controlled by said hand controlled means tor freeing the arriage from restraint of its escapement mechanism.
