For the purpose of adjusting the blade 19 to any desired angle within the slot 18, the bar 22 is provided with three screws 30, 31 and 32, these screws threadedly engaging the bar and having their inner ends disposed within the slot 18 for engagement with the rear side of the blade 19. The screws 30 and 3l are disposed in the same horizontal plane, and are provided wit-h slotted heads to permit their manipulation by means of a screwdriver, while the screw 32 is provided with a flat head to permit manipulation thereof and this screw is arranged above and between the screws 30 and 31 for engagement with the blade 19 at a point between and above the screws 30 and 31.
The invention as illustrated in the drawing is shown as including a wedge block 33 having' a depending extension 34, this block being interposed between the stabilizing plate 26 and the blade 19 and having the extension 311 disposed in the path of movement of the screw 29 so as to be engaged by the inner end thereof when the screw is in active position. The use of this wedge bloclr 33 is not necessary to the successful clamping or locking of the blade 19 in adjusted position and, therefore, may be dispensed with. However, in order to positively insure the locking of the blade in adjusted position and to eliminate the necessity of the adjustment of the screw 29 to cause its inner end to actually engage the blade 19, the block may be employed and the extension 34 providing a surface against which the screw 29 bears.
ln practice, a blade designed for the preliminary scraping of a surface, and which blade is preferably about three inches in width, is inserted in the slot 18, the adjustment of the screws 30, 31 and 32 determining the angle which the blade is adapted to assume. The blade can be movably clamped by an adjustment of the screws 27, 28 and 29 which will cro-operate with the screws 30, 31 and 32 in holding the blade so as to prevent it dropping from the slot, but yet allowing manual adjustment of the blade so that the proper set of the cutting edge can be secured. After the blade has been properly adjusted it can be locked in adjusted position by further adjustment of the screws 27, 28 and 29, such adjustment forcing the blade firmly against the screws 30, 31 and 32 and firmly holding the blade against the pressure edge 2O'd of the strip 20. The plane is now ready for use, and with the narrow scraper blade imperfections in the surface of a piece of wood can be removed and the surface made fairly level. To finish the surface the narrow blade is removed and a wider blade, say five or siX inches in width, is substituted. By employing a blade of this width all marks made by the narrow blade can be removed from the surface of the work and the surface made perfectly level and thoroughly smooth so that by using emery or garnet paper a perfectly finished surface is produced.
It is to be particularly noted that because of the arrangement of the adjusting and locking screws the blade, either with or without the block 33, can be securely held in firm contact with the pressure edge of the strip 20 so that when operating the plane the blade cannot lose its adjustment or its cutting edge bend and thus form imperfections in the surface of a piece of work. Further, the arrangement of the handle bar transversely and centrally of the plane body allows concentration of pressure on the plane and in such manner as to prevent wavering thereof during movement so as to insure a straight course. and even planing.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form of combined scraping and finishing tool embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made herein without departing from the spirit of the inven tion and the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A combined scraping and finishing plane comprising a frame including blocks, sidc plates securing the blocks in spaced relation to provide a slot between the blocks, a pressure strip secured to one of the blocks within said slot, supporting bars on the blocks at opposite sides of the slot, bracing strips secured to the blocks and abutting the bars, screws adjustable in one of the bars determining the lateral adjustment of a blade within the slot, a stabilizing plate on the inner side of the other bar, screws adjustable in the last' mentioned bar and plate for engagement with the blade to firmly secure the latter in'adjusted position against said pressure strip, and a handle bar extending transversely of the plane and secured to one of said bars.
2. A combined scraping and finishing plane comprising a pair of blocks, side plates securing the blocks in spaced relation to provide a slot between the blocks, a pressure strip secured to one of the blocks within said slot, supporting bars on thc blocks at opposite sides of the slot, a stabilizing plate associated with one of the bars, lockingscrews engaging the plate and the corresponding bar, and adjusting screws movable in the other bar.
3. A combined scraping and finishing plane as embodied in claim 2, wherein the locking and adjusting screws each comprise a pair of screws disposed in one plane and a third screw above and between the iii-st' screws.
4. A combined scraping and finishing plane comprising a frame having a slot lli) therein, bars secured to the frame at opposite sides of the slot, a stabilizing plate associated with one of the bars, adjusting screws carried by the other bar, and locking screws extending through the first bar and said plate, a wedge block adapted to be inserted between the plate and a blade disposed within the slot, and an extension on the block adapted to be engaged by one of the locking screws.
5. A combined scraping and finishing plane as embodied in claim 4, wherein the locking and adjusting screws each comprise a pair of screws disposed in one plane and a third screw above and between the first screws.
6. A combined scraping and finishing plane comprising a frame including blocks spaced to provide a slot, a pressure strip secured to one of the blocks within the slot, means for determining the angle of a blade adapted to be disposed in the slot, and means cooperating with the first means for securing the blade in adjusted position and for urging the latter into engagement with said pressure strip.
7. A combined scraping and finishing plane comprising a frame having a slot therein, a pressure strip secured to the frame within said slot, supporting bars on the frame at opposite sides of the slot, bracing strips secured to the frame and abutting the bars, adjustable means in one of the bars for determining the lateral adjustment of a blade within the slot, a stabilizing plate on the other bar, and adjustable locking means in the last mentioned bar and plate for engagement with the blade to firmly secure the latter in adjusted position ,against said pressure strip.
