Be it known that I, DANIEL L. CHANDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fitchburg, in the county of lVorcester and.
State of lVIassachusetts, have invented new and. useful lImprovements in Vending Ma'- chines,' of which the following is a specification. s
This invention relatesto a machine for vending articles of the character in which manually operable mechanism is provided which is rendered operable by. means of a coin inserted in the casing of the machine.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective slot machine for vending articles which will Operate when a coin is deposited therein to deliver one of the articles to the party depositing the coin, but which in case there are none of such arti` cles in the machine, will eject the coin from the machine so that the party who has deposited the coin may obtain possession of his coin.

The invention consists in a machine of the character set forth .of mechanism which, upon the depositof a coin in the machine is operable to eject .the coin from the machine when the article to be vended is not ejected therefrom, but which, when a coin is deposited inthe machine and the machine ejects the article to be vended therefrom, will deposit the coin in a coin receptacle ,within said machine. ln the drawings, 5 `y is the-casing of the machine, 6 is a receptacle for the articles to be vended, 7 is that portion of the casing which encloses the advertising device. The casing 5 is provided with a cover 8 pivot-ally mounted at 9 to swing on said casing and provided with a hasp 10 which engages a staple 11 to which it is locked by a padlock 12. A receptacle 13 for coins consists of a drawer which is slidable in the easing 5 and is locked in position in said casing by a pin. 14 slidable vertically in the casing 5 and having its lower end adapted to projectinto a notch 15 in the coin receptacle 13. The npper end of the pin 14 when the cover is closed is adjacent to the underside thereofl so that said locking pin cannot be moved out of engagement with the coin receptacle until the cover 8 is swung out of alignment therewith and this cannot be done until the Ycover 8 is unlocked'. this embodiment of my invention preferably articles are lfed out of the machine.
The article receptacle 6 in consists of a. glass cylindergl which is secured to a base 17 by a rim 18 and by rods 19. A cover 20 is hinged at 21 to the rim 18 and is locked thereto by a hasp 22 and padlock 23, See Figure 1. The base 17 of the article l recept-acle is conical in form at 23 and has a reciprocated forwardly and backwardlybeneath the chute 24 and thecolumn of articles contained therein.I Said carrier slide is "member which consists of a rod meager provided with an orifice 31 which extends. therethrough and is large enough to admit the lowermost article 30 of said column of articles when the carrier slide is in its rearward or starting position, see Figures 2, 3 and 4. A. reciprocatory motion is impartedV to said carrier slide to-carry the lowermost article 30'; of saidcolumn of articles forward `along the upper face of a horizontal partition 32 whichfextends across the casing, and said casing is also provided with a chute 33, the inlet opening 34 of which is located immediately below an opening 35 which extends through the partition 32, said openings 34 and 35 being locatedY immediately in front of the orifice 31. The chute 33 extends downwardly from its upper end and empties into a shelf 36 forming a part of the front of the casing 5. The carrier slide 27 has a right angled arm 37 which extends downwardly from the back of said slide and then horizontally forward projecting through al hole 38 provided in the back of the chute 33 and forming a detent to prevent the articles which are being vended from being delivered to the shelf before the carrier slide is released and allowed to return to its initial position'. A reciprocaterynmotionis imparted to the. slide 27 by an:` actuating 39 slidably mounted in the front of the casing at 40, and also slidably mounted at 41 in a vertical front plate 42 forming a part of the carrier slide 27. The rod 39 is reciprocated by means of a. bell/crank lever 43, one arm 44 of which is bifurcated at 45 and engages a cross pin 46 fast to the rod 39. The lever 43 is pivoted at 50 to the casing of the machine and has an ar'm 51 constituting a handle and provided with a thumb piece 52. This handle in the operation of the machine plays downwardly and upwardly in la slot 53 provided in the front of the casing and is moved upwardly by springs 54,'the upward motion of the handle 51 and the rearward motionv of the Aarm 44 and rod 39 being limited by the engagement of the arm 44 with the way 28, see Ifigure 5. The downward movement of the handle 51 and therefore the forward movement of the rod 39 are limited by ,the engagement of Said handle 51 with the bottom of the slot 53.' The cover 8 is provided with a. coin chute 55 which has a slot 56 therein to guide the coin which is put in the machine, and this slot terminates atI its lower end in alignment with a vertical slot 57 provided in the wall 42 of the carrier slide 27 and extending transversely of said slide and of said actuating member 39. lVhen the carrier slide 27 is in its rearward position as illust-rated in Figures 2 and 4, the slot 57 is in alignment with the slot 56, and a notch 58 whieh is provided in the actuating meinber 39 is then in alignment. with said slot 57. rlhe notch 58 has a shoulder 59 sublongitudinal line of said-actuating member and an inclined edge .extending forwardlyfrom the shoulder 59 to the upper' edge of said actuating member. When the carrier slide is in its forward position the slot 57 is in alignment with an opening 61 provided lin the horizontal partition 32 and above the coin receptacle 13,
By reference to Figures 2 and 5 it will be seen that the outer end of the coin slot57 in the carrier slide or the right hand end of said slot as viewed in Figure 2 is closed and opened alternately by means of aholding slide 62 which is slidably mounted upon the carrier slide 27 and is adapted toslide in ways 63 provided thereon. This holding slide has a downwardly project-ing arm 64, (Figures 5 and 1l) which moves forwardly and backwardly when the carrier slide is moved forwardly and backwardly and is adapted to engage, when the carrier slide nears the end of its forward movement, a stop 65, and when said carrier slide nears the end of its rearward movement, said arm is adapted to engage a stop 66 and to thus alternately'open the end of the slot 57 and allow the coin to pass out of said slot and into the coin receptacle 13, and to close said slot to prevent the coin from passing out of said slot when it is necessary to hold the coin in said slot to lock the carrier slide and the actuating member together.
As will be seen by reference to Figures 2 and 4, a latch 66 .is pivoted at 67 to the frame of the machine, said latch having an arm 68 provided with a series of teeth 69 on one edge thereof and another arm 70 which is normally held i'n Contact with the fra-me by a spring 71, one end of which is connected to the arm 70 and the other end to a. p-in 72 fast to the frame of the machine. lVhen the carrier slide fails toi feed an article tothe exit chute 33, the coin 73 is ejected from the machine by means o-f an auxiliary chute 74, sce Figs. 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, which, at its lower end opens into the chute 33. Said 'auxiliary chute is mount- Cil ed upon a carrier frame 7 5 consisting of a cross bar 76 and two rods 77 and 78 which are fastened thereto. The rod 77 is slidable in ears 79 and 80 fast to the frame of the machine, and is provided with a cross pin 81 which is normally held against the ear 7 i.) by a spring 82 which encircles the rod 77 and bears at oneend against the. ear 80 and at other ond against thecross pin 81. The rod 78 is slidably mounted in the vertical front plate 42 of the carrier slide 27 and is also slidably mounted at its rea-rend 1n a vertical fiange. 83 which encirclcs the orifice 31 and forms a part of the carrier slide 27. A cam lever 84 is pivted at 85 to an arm 86 which is fastened to the carrier slide 27. One arm 87 of said lever is bifurcated at 88 and engages a. vertical pin 89 which is fastened to the rod 78. Another arm 90 on said lever has a pin 91 extending upwardly therefrom at its free end and in the operation of the machine this pin is adapted to engage the edge 92, or the edge 93 of a finger 94 on a stationary cam ptlate 95 for the purpose of assisting in the positioning o-f the auxiliary coin chute 74 as more fully hereinafter described.
The articles in the receptacle 6 are agitated or stirred in order to assist in feeding them down the chute 24 by fingers 96 .and 97 which are fast to levers 98 and 99 pivoted at 100 and 101, said levers having a. rocking motion imparted thereto by vpins 102 and 103 which are fastened to ears 104 and 105 forming a part of thel carrier slide 27, see Figures 3 and 4.
The mechanism for operating the advertising device is also operatedA from the carrier slide by a pin 106 which-engages an arm 107 fast to-the rock shaft. 108, said rock shaft having a, rocker arm 109 thereon which is connected by a link 110 to a pawl and lratchet mechanism which operates substantially the same as that shown and described in my said application for United States Letters Patent No. 353,712 and in this case requires no detailed description.
In order to close the slotl 56 in thel coin chute 55 when the slot 57 in the carrierslide is out of alignment therewith a horizontal plate 111 is provided upon the upper end of the vertical front plate 42 on the carrier slide and extends rearwardly therefrom so that when'the carrier slide is moved forwardly from the position illustrated in Figure 4, this platewill pass beneath the bottom end of the slot 56 and close said slot/so that no coirs can enter the slot 57 nn( il the carrier slide is moved backwardly to its rearward position.
The general operation of the. mechanism hereinbefore specilically described is as follows :--Assuming the parts to be in the relative positions illustrated in Figures l` 2, 4 and 5 and that one of the articles 30 is located in the orifice 3l in the `carrier slide 27 and that a. coin 73 has been dropped into the coin chute and has passed down the slot 56 and into the slot 57 in the carrier slide. At thistime the actuating member 39 is in its rearwardposition with the arm 44 resting against the way 28, being held in that position by the springs 54 with the slot 56 in alignment with the slot 57 and with the detent arm 37 in the position indicated in l `igure 4. As soon as the coin enters the slot 57 it will pass downwardly in said slot and project into the. notch 58 in front of .the shoulder 59 on the actuating member 39.A The arm 5l of the bell crank lever i3 vis now pushed downwardl)Y b v means of the thumb vpiece 52 and against the action of the springs 1 54 `whereuponthe actuating member 39 will be moved forward by means of the pin 46 and the arm 4-4 of the lever 43. The actuating member 39 being locked to the carrier slide by the coin 73, will cause said carrier `slide toniove forwardly with it and the article 30 will be moved by said carrier slide along the horizontal artition 32 until it arrives in alignment with the opening 35 in said horizontal partition, whereupon it will drop through the inletopening 34 into the chute 33 and will pass down in said chute until it restsupon the detent arm 37 which, at this time, has been moved forward into the position illustrated in dotted lines, Figure 4. During thislforward movement of the lcarrier slide, the following operations take place.; The teeth 69,011 the latch' 66 successivelyengage said coin and prevent the car-y rier slidefrom moving backwardly until it has moved forwardlyvv 'to the full extent of itskforwardmovement as illustrated in Figure 6, and the holding slide 62 will move forwardlylwith the carrier slide .and hold the coin in the slotl 57 until just before the carrier slide. gets to the end of its forward movement, whereupon the arm 64 on said iholding slide will engage the stop and further forward movement of said holding slide will be arrested, while the carrier slide will move forward until the slot 57 in open, and at tl'ieflastfvpart of this forward movement of thevjcarrier slide the edge of the coin will ii'deiipon the inclined edge 69 which will rockvthe latch 66 upon its pivot 67 against the action of the spring 71 and as soon as the holding slide hasbeen moved out of alignment with the slot 57, the spring 71 will cause Vthe arm 68 ofthe latch. to move towardthe right, Figure 6, and eject the coin 73 -f from the'slot 57l whereupon said. coin fwill drop through the opening 61 in the horizontalfpartition 32 and will fall into the coin receptacle-13. During'the irst part of t-he forward movement'of, the carrierslide the auxiliary chute 74, the cross bar` 76 and rthe rods 77 and 78 will remain stationary the rear wall of the orifice 31, then upon a further forward movement of the carrier slide, the'article l30 being locked between the rear wall of the orifice 31 and the rear end of the rod 78 will push said rod 78 forward. and this will cause the cross .bar 76,
" kthe auxiliary chute 74 and the rod 77 to be l movedfforwardly, together with the lever 84 'until the parts assume the relative positions illustrated in Figure 6, in which it will be noted that the auxiliary chute 74 is out of Aalignment with the slot 57 and the pin 91 on the lever 84'has engaged the inclined edge.
iaavsi 92 of the finger 94 on the cam plate 95, whereupon further forward.movement of the carrier slide, in addition to moving the holdino slide out of alignment with the coin slot will move the auxiliary slide 74 forwardl)v and keep it out of alignment with the coin 73 so that said coin has a free pathway out of the slot 57 and into the opening 6l, the coinfbeing ejected from the slot 57 at the end of the forward movement of the carrier slide as hereinbefore set forth. Upon releasing the lever 51, the parts will return to the relative positions illustrated in Figi ure 2, and the detent arm 37 will be drawn backwardly, dropping the article and allowing it to roll down the chute 33 and on to the shelf 36 where it may he obtained by the party operating the machine.
This is the sequence of operation which takes place when a coin has been placed in a machine and when the article 30 is in po- 'sition to be fed forward by the carrier slide.
Now assuming that the coin has been placed in the machine and that there is no article in the-orifice 31 and that the machine is operated as before to move the carrier slide forwardly, since there is no article in the orifice 31 when the carrier slide is moved forwardly the rod 78 will slide into said orifice and the vertical partition 42 will slide forwardly until it abuts against the rear face of the cross bar 76. the auxiliary chute will be in alignment with the slot 57I and with the coin 73 as illustrated in Figure 7, and the pin 91 on the lever 84 will have passed over into engagement with the edge 93 of the cam plate. Further forward movement from this point will cause the holding slide to be moved out of alignment with the coin slot 57, but the auxiliary coin chute will travel with the carrier slide and will remain in alignment with the coin :slot 57 until the latch 66 operates as before to knock the coin out of the slot 57 but in this instance the coin will be ejected from the slot 57 into'the auxiliary chute 74 whereupon said coin will travel down the chute 74 and into the chute 33 and upon the lever 51 being released and the parts moved backwardly into the positions illustrated in Figure 2 the coin will slide down the chute 33 and yonto the shelf 36 where it may be ob,- tained by the operator of the machine.
During the forward and rearward movement-of the carrier slide whenever there is a coin in the slot 57, the stirring fingers 96 and 97 will be operated by the levers 98 and 99 to agitate the articles in the article receptacle by the pins 102 and`103 on the carrier slide.

1. A machine for' vending articles having, in combination, a receptacle for articles, mechanism including a slide adapted to receive an article from said receptacle and feed said article out of said machine, said mechanism being rendered effective to feed said article out of said machine by the deposit of a coin therein. and mechanism adapted to eject said coin from said machine in the event no article is receivedI by said slide from said receptacle. f t

7. A vending machine having, in com bination, a receptacle for articles, an outlet chute lea-ding out of said machine, a slide with` an orifice thereinrv located beneath said receptacle and adapted to receive an article in said orifice from said receptacle and conduct it to said outlet chute, said slide having a slot therein adapted to receive a coin. an actuating member adapted to be locked 'to said slide by a coin in said slot, an auxiliary chute adapted to guide a coin out of said machine, a slidably mounted carrier frame to which said auxiliary chute is attached adapted to project into said orifice and contact with one of said articles located therein, and mechanism rendered ineffective by said article While being fed by said carrier slide to said outlet chute to position said auxiliary chute to receive said coin from said slide, said last named mechanism being rendered effective to position said auxiliary chute to reccivesaid coin from said slide by the failure of said slide to receive one of said articles.
8. A vending machine having, in combination, a receptacle for articles, an outlet chute. leading out of vsaid machine, a slide with an orifice therein adapted to receive an article from said receptacle and convey it to said outlet chute, said slide having a slot therein adapted to receive a coin, an

' ed to move said auxiliary chute into align- .ment with said slot during the forward movement of saidl carrier slide, said last named mechanism being rendered ineffective by one of said articles when located in said orifice.
9. A. vending machine having, in com. bination, a receptacle for articles, an outlet chute leading out of said machine, a slide with an orifice therein adapted to receive an larticle from said receptacle and convey it to said outlet chute, said slide having a slot therein adapted to receive a coin, an actua-ting member adapted to be locked to said slide by a coin in said slot, an auxiliary chute adapted to guide a coin out of said machine, said auxiliary chute being normally out of alignment with said slot, a slidably mounted carrier frame to which said auxiliary chute is attached, a portion of said carrier frame being adapted to project into said orifice when said carrier slide is moved forwardly, a lever pivoted tosaid slide and connected to said carrier frame and a stationary cam plate adapted to be engaged by said lever during the forward movement of said carrier Slide, whereby when said portion of said carrier frame engages an article in said orifice, said auxiliary frame will be held out of alignment with said slot during the forward movement of said carrier slide.
10. A vending machine having. in combination, a receptacle for articles, lan outlet chute leading out of said machine, a
slide withJ` an orifice therein adapted to re-l ceive an article from said receptacle and convey it to said outlet chute, said slide having a slot therein adapted to receive a coin, an actuating member adapted to be locked to said slide by a coin in said slot, an auxiliary chute adapted to guide a coin out of said machine, said auxiliary chute being normally out of alignment with said slot, a slidably mounted carrier frame to which said auxiliary chute is attached` a portion of said carrier fra-me being adapted to project into said orifice when said carrier slide is moved forwardly. a leverv pivoted to said slide and connected to said carrier frame and a stationary cam plate adapted to be engaged by said lever during the `forward movement of said carrier slide,
whereby when said portion of said carrier frame engages an article in said orifice, said auxiliary frame will be held out of alignweaver j l' i g ment with lsaid slot during the forward -movement of said carrier slide, and whereby when said portionv of said carrier frame, does not enga-ge an article in saidforific,l said auxiliary chute will be positioned in alignment with said slot` duringthe forward lmovement of said carrier slide.

A machine for vending articles having, in combination, afreceptacle'for articles, me hanism including a slide adapted t0 receive an article from said receptacle and feed said article out of said machine, saidmechanism being rendered effective to feed said article out of said machine by the deposit of a coin therein, means associated with said article receiving mechanism and adapted to agitate said articles to faclitate the feeding thereof from said receptacle to said artic-le receiving and .feeding mechanism, and mechanism adapted to eject said coin from said machine in the. event no article is received by said slide from said receptacle.

A machine for vending articles having. in combination, a receptacle for articles, a receptacle for coin,.an outlet chute leading out of said machine, a slide with an orifice Y therein adapted to receive an articlel from said. receptacle and convey i-t tov said outlet chute. said slide having a slot therein adapted to receive a coin, an actuating member adapted to be locked t0 said slide by a coin in said slot, mechanism adapted to eject said coin from said slot and into said coin receptacle, and mechanism rendered effective by the absence of an ant'icle in said orifice to eject said coin from said machine.

A machine. fOr-vending articles having, in con'ibination, a recep-tacle for articles. a carrier slide located beneath said receptacle and having an orifice therein adapted to reeeiveone of said articles, a chute leading out of said machine, means adapted to be locked to said carrier by a coin whereby said slide may be moved t0 bring saidorice out of alignment with'said receptacle and into alignment with said chute to allow one ofsaid articles to pass into said` chute and out of said machine, and mechanism adapted to eject said coin from said machine in the event of said carrier slide failing to feed Aan article as set forth.

A vending machine having. in c nnbination. a. easing. a. receptacle adapted to contain articles. a carrier slide movablevbeneath said receptacle and adapted to receive one of said articles. an outlet chute provided in said casing having an inlet. opening beneath the. path of travelof said slide and an outlet opening extending outsideI said casing. a manually operable actuating member slidab'le in said casing and in said slide. said slide being' provided with avertical slot 4extening transversely of said actuating memlil) into and out of alignment with said slot, whereby upon the lnitroduction ot ay coin into said slot, said slide may be locked to said actuating member and mechanism adapted to eject said coin from said machine when said actuating member has been, operated in the event of said slide failing to r ceive an article from said receptacle.

A vending machine having, in combination, a casing, l a receptacle adapted to contain articles, a carrier slide movable'befifi neath said receptacle and adapted to receive one ot said articles, an outlet chute provided in said casing having an inlet opening beneath the path of travel of said slide and an outlet opening extending outside said casing, a manually operable actuating member slidable in said casing and in said slide, said slide being provided with a vertical slot extending transversely of said actuating member, and said actuating member being provided with a notch adapted to he brought into and out 'of alignment with said slot, whereby upon theI introduction ot a coin into said slot, said slide-may be locked to said actuating member, means to lock said coin in said slot in engagement with sai-d notch and mechanism adapted to e-jelt said coin from said machine when said actuating member h-as been operated in the event of said slide failing to'receive anarticle .from said receptacle. i

A vending machine having. in coinbination, a casing, al receptacle adapted to contain articles, a carrier slide movable beneath said receptafle and adapted to receive one of said articles, an outlet chute provided in said casing having an inlet opening beneath the path ot tra-vel of said slide and an outlet opening extending outside said casingta manually operable actuating member slidable in said casing and in said slide, said slide being provided With a vertical slot eX- tending transversely of said actuating member, and said actuating member being provided with a notch adapted to be brought into and ou-t of alignment with said slot, means extending acioss said slot and adapted to hold a coin in said slot and in engagement with said notch, whereby said slide and actuating member may. be locked together.

A vending machine having, incombination. a casing, a receptacle adapted to `contain articles, a. carrier slide movable beneath said receptacle. and adapted to receive one of said articles, an outlet chute providedv in said casing having an inlet opening beneath i the path of travel of said slide and an outlet opening extending'outside said casing, a manually operable actuating member slidable in said casing and in said slide, said slide being provided with a vertical slot extending transversely of said actuating member, and said actuating member being provided with a notch adapted to bey brought into and ont of alignment` with said slot, whereby upon the introduction of a coin into said slot, said slide may be locked to said actuating member, means to limit the distance to which. said actua-ting member can slide in said carrier slide,'and mechanism adapted to eject said coin from said machine in the event of said carrier slide failing to feed an article when a reciprocatory motion is imparted to 'said slide.

A vending machine having in combination, a casing, a receptacle ada'pted to contain articles, -a carrier slide movable beneath said receptacle and adapted to receive one of said articles` an outlet chute provided in said casing having an inlet opening beneath the path of travel of said slide and an outlet opening extending outside said casing, a manually operable actuating member slidable in said casing and in said slide` said slide being provided with a vertical slot extending transversely of said actuating member, and said actuating member being provided with a notch adapted to. be brought into and out of alignment with said slot. lwhereby upon tlhe introduction of a coin into said slot. said slide may be locked to said actuating member, said casing being provided with a slot adapted to align with the slot in said carrier slide when said carrier slide is in its rearward position, means on saidcarrier slide adapted to close the slot in said casing when the slot in said carrier slide is out of engagement therewith and mechanism adapted to eject said coin -from said machine in the event of said carrier slide failing to receive and feed an article to said outlet chute when moved by said actuating member.

A vending machine having, in combination, a casing, a receptacle adapted to con` tain articles, a carrier slide movable beneath said receptacle and adapted to receive one of said articles, an outlet chute provided in said casing having aninlet opening beneath the path of travel `of said slide and an outlet opening extending outside said casing, a
manually operable actuating member slidable in said casing and in said slide, saidV slide being provided with a vertical slot extending transversely of said actuating member, and said actuating member being provided with a notch adapted to be brought into and o-ut of-alignment with said slot, said notch terminating at its rear end in a shoulder and being bevelled forwardly from said shoulder, whereby said actuating member will be locked by a coin located in said slot to said carrier slide when said' carrier slide is being moved forward, and said coin will be forced out of said slot during the rearward movement of said actuating member, means to limit theI distance to which Said actuating member can be moved rearwardly in said carrier slide and an auxiliary chute adapted to guide said coin into said outlet chute in the event of said carrier slide failing to feed an article into said outlet chute.

Avending machine having, in combination, a casing, a receptacle adapted to contain articles, a carrier slide movable beneath said receptacle and adapted to receive one of said articles therefrom, a manually operable actuating member slidable in said sasing and in said slide, said slide being provided with a vertical slot extending transversely of said actuating member and said'actnating memiii iii() ber being providedwith a notch adapted to be brought into and out of alignment with said slot, wherebyupon the introduction of a coin into said slot, said slide may be locked to said actuating member, means adapted to engage said coin during the forward movement of said slide to prevent said slide from being moved rearwardly and mechanism adapted to eject said coin from said machine in the event of said sli-de failing to receive an article from said receptacle.

A vending machine having, in combination, a casing, a receptacle adapted to contain articles, a carrier slide movable beneath said receptacle and adapted to receive one of said articles therefrom, a manually loperable actuating member slidable in said casing and in said slide, said slide being provided with a vertical slot extending transversely of said actuating member and said actuating member being provided with a notch adapted to be brought into and out of alignment with said slot, whereby upon the introduction of a coin into said slot, said slide may be locked to said actuating member, means to lock said coin in said slot in engagement with said notch, means adapted to engage said coin during the forward movement of said slide to prevent said slide from being moved rearwardly and mechanism adapted to eject said coin from said machine in the event of said slide failing to receive one of said articles.

A vendingmachine having, in combination, a casing, a receptacle adapted to contain articles, a carrier slide movable beneath said receptacle and adapted to receive an article therefrom and rendered operable by the insertion of a coin therein to carry said article and eject it from said slide without contacting with said coin, means adapted to engage said coin during the forward movement of said slide to prevent said slide from being moved rearwardly and mechanism adapted to eject said coin from said machine in the event of said slide failing to receive one of said articles.

A vending machine having, in combination, a casing, a receptacle adapted to contain articles, a carrier slide movable beneath said receptacle and ada ted to receive an article therefrom and ren ered operable by the insertion of a coin therein to carry said article and eject it from said slide without contacting with said coin, a member having a series of teeth adapted to engage said com during the forward movement of said slide to prevent said slide from being moved rearwardly and mechanism adapted to eject said coin from said machine in the event of said slide failing to receive one of said articles.

A vending machine having, in combination, a casing, a receptacle adapted to contain articles, a carrier slide movable beneath said receptacle and adapted to receive an article therefrom and rendered operable by the insertion of a coin therein, a pivoted member having a series of teeth adapted to engage said com during the forward movement of said slide to prevent said slide fro-m being moved rearwardly and mechanism adaplted to eject said coin from said machine in t e event of saidcarrier slide failing to receive one of said articles.
29. A vending machine having, in combination, a casing, a receptacle adapted to contain articles, a carrier slide movable beneath said receptacle adapted to receive one of said articles, and rendered operable by the insertion of a coin therein, an outlet chute in said casing having an inlet opening beneath the path of travel of said slide and an outlet opening extending outside said casing, a detent fast to said slide extending into said outlet chute and adapted to be operated by said slide to alternately stop and release one of said articles as it passes down said chute and mechanism adapted to eject said coin from said machine in the event of said earrier slide failing to receivel one of said articles.
