UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILFORD T. VANDERVOORT, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIONOR TO AMERICAN SEATING COMPANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
EXTENSION MEMBER FOR DESK TOPS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed January 31, 1924. Serial No. 689,671.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MILFORD T. VANDER- mom, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extension Members for Desk Tops and the like, of
which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to extension 19 members for desk tops and the like; and its object is to provide a device of that character so mounted in connection with the top of a desk or table as to be movable to a position wherein its upper or usable surface is at approximately the same level with that of the desk or table, and also to, a retracted position wherein it underlies said top.
This object is attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the structur hereinafter particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view in perspective of aportion of the horizontally disposed top of a desk or table, having the extension member which is shown in extended or usable position;
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the same line 22 of Figure 1 Figure 3 is a view in perspective of said desk to (partially broken away) and the extension member is shown in retracted or non-usable position; and
Figure 4 is a sectional View of the same taken on a vertical plane corresponding to line 44 of Figure 3.
In the structure illustrated by the drawings, the horizontally disposed top 1 of a desk or table has mounted in connection therewith an extension member 2 adapted to be used as a support or rest for the arm of a person engaged in writing on the desk, etc. It is desirable that the upper or usable surface 3 of such a member, when in use, be maintained in approximately the same level or plane as that of the up er surface of the top itself of the desk or ta 1e; and it is also desirable that such a member, when not in use, be moved to another position wherein it dolels not project outwardly from the desk or ta 0.
The present invention attains these ends,
taken on a vertical plane corresponding toand preferably by the following means: The desk top 1 has adjacent its under side a bearing 5 formed by the metallic bearing block 6. The extension member 2 carries adjacent its under side 7 a rod 8,.secured to the extension member in any suitable manner, as by the screws 9. This rod is turnable and also slidable in said bearing 5. It will be seen that the extension member 2 ma be moved from its usable position seen in igures 1 and 2 (wherein its usable upper surface 3 is approximately'level with the upper surface of the top 1 of the desk) to its nonusable position, by first drawing it outwardly, then turning it half-way around on the axis of the rod 8, and then pushing it inwardly to the retracted position seen in Figures 3 and 4 wherein it is in parallel relation with the top 1 and underlies the same, and itsusable surface 3 is downward.
To return the extension member to its usable position, the above action is reversed, this member being first drawn outwardly, then turned half-way around in the opposite direction and then pushed inwardly. To hold the extension member in either of its said positions, it may be provided with a bolt 10 (preferably formed in piece with the rod 8 as" shown) adapted to be slidably received by the, keeper 11, carried by the top 1, when said member is pushed into its usable or extended position; or by the keeper 12, similarly carried, when this member is pushed into its retracted position of non-use.
t will be seen also that the right-angled inner end portion 13 of the rod 8 may also serve to maintain or assist in maintainin the extension member in either of its said positions; and that this end portion 13 also serves as a stop to limit the outward movement of the rod 8 and the extension member 2 carried thereby.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbefore described.
I claim:
1. In a structure of the character described: a desk top having adjacent its under side a bearing; an extension member therefor carrying adjacent its under side a rod turnable and slidable in said bearing to an extended position wherein said members upper surface is approximately in the same plane with the tops surface and to a retracted positlon wherein sald member, reversibly turned, underlies the top.
2. In a structure of the character described: a desk top having adjacent its under side a bearing; an extension member therefor carrying adjacent its under side a rod turnable and slidable in said bearing to an extended position wherein said members upper surface is approximately in the same plane with the tops surface and to a retracted position wherein said member, reversibl turned, underlies the top; means for ho ding said member in at least one of its said positions.
3. In a structure of the character described: a desk top having adjacent its under side a bearing; an extension member therefor earl-yin adjacent its under side a rod turnable an' slidahle in said bearing to an extended position wherein said inembers weave-r upper surface is approximately in the same plane with the tops surface and to a retracted position wherein said member, reversibly turned, underlies the top; a stop for limiting the outward movement of the rod.
4. In a structure of the character described: a desk top having a keeper and adjacent its under side a bearing; an extension member therefor carrying a bolt and adjacent its under side a rod turnable and slidable in said bearing to an extended position wherein said members upper surface is ap proximately in the sameplane with the tops surface and to a retracted posilion wherein said member, reversibly turned, underlies the top, the bolt in one said position of said member being slidably received by the keeper.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Grand Rapids, Michigan this 24th day of J anuary, 1924.
MILFORD T. VANDERVUORT.
