To all who-in it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. LYNCH, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn Borough, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting ltlachincs, of which the follow-- ing is a specification.
This invention relates to Continuous billing typewriting machines of the variety disclosed in the patent to Wernery & Smith, No. 1,132,055, granted March 16, 1915.
In the aforesaid patent, the usual typewriter carriage is provided with arearward extension comprisim rails upon which runs a carbon-carriage. Vebs comprising a succession of duplicate forms are nterleaved with the carbons and pass beneath the platen and up to the printing point. When a set.
of forms'has been typed, it is necessary to retract the carbons for use with the next,
set of forms before the typed forms are '.severed. The platen is lifted in the carriage v-to permit the webs and carbons to be af-straightened out, thusfacilitating the gag- "ing' of the webs and the return'of the carbons to their initial, rearward position. Hitherto, the carbon-carriage has been returned by hand, a forwardly-projecting handle fixed to the carbon-carriage being provided for this purpose. The present in vention provides for automatic means for returning the carbon-carriage, said means being rendered effective by the movement of the carriage to the right during the ordinary operation of typing a set of forms. A connection is provided between the platenframe and the-returning means so that the latter begins to function when the platen is lifted.

F lgure 6 is a plan View of the device shown in Figure In the continuous billing typewriting machine of the general variety shown in said patent to )Vernery 8: Smith, a plurality of webs 1O, 11, 12, are drawn from the rear over a back rod 13 forming part of a rear ward extension 14 of the typewriter carriage 15, and are carried forward under the platen 16 past the feed-rolls 17 18, so that types 19 upon type-bars 20 mayprint upon the outside web. To produce lmpressions-upon the inside webs, carbon- sheets 22 and 23, fast to the usual clip- bars 24 and 25 of the carbon-carriage 26, are interleaved between the webs. The carbon-carriage comprises the usual stepped side-members 27, and is provided at each side with rollers 28 r ding upon rails 29 formed upon the exten- S1011 14. The carriage and its extension are supported by front and rear rollers and 46 operating on front and rear rails 47 and 48, respectively. The platen is line-spaced by a usual line-spa-ce lever -1 operating a slide 2, so that a pawl (not shown) on said slide engages a ratchet-wheel (not shown) fixed to one of the shafts or axles 3, journaled in the carriage end walls. The axles 3 may be rotated also by the usual fingerwheels 4 on the ends thereof. A gear-wheel 5 fixed to the inner end of each axle meshes inciding with the axis about which the platen-frame (to be described hereinafter) is swung. A gear-Wheel 8 on each end of the platen axle 7 also meshes with pinion 6, so that rotation of either shaft 3 will transmit a corresponding rotation to the platen axle. This construction is fully described in the said patent to Wernery & Smith.
\Vhen a set of forms upon the webs 10, 11, 12, has been typed-in the usual manner, the platen is released by pushing handle 40 rearwardly to swing catch 41 off pin 42 on the platen. The swinging platen-frame 30, in
which the platen is journaled, is rotated about its pivot 31, thus permitting the platen liU . K to be swung forwardly to the Figure pcsition. In the'latter osition, the webs 10, 11, 12, maybe seized by the typist at' their forward ends and drawn forward until they contact with an adjustable gage 32 fixed on an extension 33 of a front shelf 34 carried by the swinging frame. The carbon-carria e with its attached carbon-sheets must then moved rearwardlinpreparatory to severing the webs against ifs-35, since the carbonsheets maybe used over again. The automatic means for retracting the carbon-carriage when the platen-frame isswung for} wardly will now be described.
A plate 50 is fixed to a side-bar 51 of the extension 14 by means of depending arms 52. A' vertical shaft 53'of a spring motor is journaled in said plate and has fixed thereto one end of a spring 54, the other end of which is fixed to a drum 55, resting upon the plate 50, said drum being provided on its periphery adjacent its upper and lower the lower end of a bushing 69 havinga pinion on its upper end. Said bushing 69 is also loosely mounted upon shaft 53. A light spring interposed between ratchet wheel 60 and pinion 70, and a heavy spring 76 interposed between the lower end of bushing 65 and a nut 77 adjustably fixed on the threaded end of shaft 53, tend to press bushings 65 and 69 together so that they move as a unit. Within the enlarged cylindrical opening 66 is confined a friction disk 80, which is normally pressed into engage ment with the base 81 of the bushing 65 by the heavy spring 76, which is stronger than spring 7 5 and supplies a greater tension. will thus be seen that if pinion 70 is rotated in a clockwise direction, bushings 69 and 65 will move together, and the pressure of base 81 on disk will cause the shaft 53 to rotate therewith. The teeth 67 on the bushing 65 perform the same function as the teeth of a ratchet-wheel, the teeth 68 performing the function of a pawl. A one-way driving mechanism is thus obtained between the carriage and the shaft. To rotate the pinion 70, the rear rail 48 is provided with teeth to form a rack meshing with the pinion. The rail 48 remains fixed while the carriage is drawn to the right, the pinion 7 0 rotating in a clockwise direction.
It will be apparent that as the pinion 70 rotates in a clockwise direction, shaft 53 rotates similarly, thus winding up spring 54, also in a clockwise direction. The drum 55 is held by a pawl 82, pivoted on the plate 50 and pressed into engagement withratchet-wheel 57 by a spring 83, against movement while the spring is being wound up.
When the carriage travelsto the left, the spring 54 does not unwind due to the. fact t at a pawl 84 is pressed into engagement with ratchet-wheel 60. Upon the return movement, pinion 70 rotates in a counterclockwise direction, and teeth 68. ride idly over teeth 67, bushing 69 rising against the action of the light spring 75 while the friction connection between base 81 and disk 80 is maintained by the strong spring 76.
When the carriage is a ain drawn to the right (after another line as been typed on a set of forms), bushing 69- moves integrally with bushing 65 and friction disk 80 to further wind spring 54. As spring 54 winds. up, it offers greater resistance and it requires more force to rotate shaft 53. When spring 54 has been fully wound up, the resistance it offers will be so great that the friction connection between disk 80 and bushing 65 will be overcome, and the latter will rotate without transmitting any additional rotation to the shaft 53. The tension of spring 76 may be adjusted by nut 77 to vary the friction connection to correspond with the tension of spring 54. The spring 54 remains in its fully wound condi tion, ue to the engagement of pawl 84 with ratchet-wheel 60, until the typing of a set of forms has been, completed and theplatenframe is swung forwardly about its pivot 31.
When the platen-frame is swung for- -wardly, a pin 85 thereon contacts with a lever86 near the end of the forward movement-of the platen-frame, to swing said lever forwardly about its pivot 87 on the carriage. Along link 88 pivoted on lever 86 at 89 is drawn forwardly against the tension of sprin 111, the other end of link 88 being pivote at 90 to the end of one arm 91 o a bell-crank. Said bell-crank is pivotally mounted at 92 on the upper end of shaft 53, the other arm 93 thereof having a shaft 94 vertically journaled in the end thereof. roller 95 at its upper end and a pinion 96 at its lower end meshing with gear-wheel 56. When link 88 is drawn forwardly, arm 91 is also drawn forwardly, and a dog 97 disengages pawl 82 from ratchet-wheel 57. The drum 55 immediately revolves in a clockwise direction to relieve the tension of spring 54, thus rotating pinion 96 and friction-roller 95 in a counter-clockwise direction. \Vhen arm 91 is drawn forwardly, roller 95 is rotated toward the carbon-carriage extension where it contacts with a flexible belt 98, mounted upon rollers 99 and 100 fixed to the carriage extension. The belt is attached to the carbon-carriage by clamps 101,'each having jaws 102 and 103, the latter being pivotally mounted and Said shaft carries a friction-' magma pressed by a spring 104 toward jaw'102. A spring-pressed catch 105 will hold jaws 103 away from jaws 102 when the upper ends of jaws 103 are pressed far enough to the rear. By this arrangement, the carbon-carria e is fixed to the front side of the belt and will move rearwardly when the frictionroller 95 rotates in a counter-clockwise di rection, due to the rotation of the drum. The rearward movement of the front face of the belt is limited by a guide-roller 112- fixed to side-bar 51.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the above description, but is briefly as follows: A set of forms is inserted in the machine in position for typing. At the end of each line, the carriage is re-v tracted to its initial position toward the right, thus winding up spring 54 within the drum. When the carriage travels toward the left, the spring is held by pawl 84 against unwinding,the drum is held by pawl 82 against rotation to relieve the tension of the spring, and no motion is transmitted to shaft 53, due to teeth 68 riding idly over teeth 67. Each' additional movement of the carriage toward the right winds up spring 54, until the latter is fully wound up, when the resistance offered by the spring is so great as to overcome the frictional engagement between base 81 and disk 80, and the former will rotate in contact with the latter, but without further rotation of the disk. \V hen a set of forms has been fully typed, the platen-frame is rotated forwardly, and,
when near the end of its forward movement,-
pin 85 engages lever 86 to rotate the latter forwardly, drawing link 88 forwardly, and rocking the bell-crank pivoted at 92. Dog 97 on arm 91 of the bell-crank releases pawl 82 and allows the drum to rotate in a clockwise direction, causing the pinion 96 and friction-roller to rotate in a counter-clockwise direction. Roller 95 rotating against the front member of belt 98 draws the front of said belt rearwardly, and with it the carbon-carriage attached thereto, together with its interleaved carbons. The work-webs are held stationary by the operator during the automatic retraction of the carbons. A stop 110 limits the rearward movement of the carbon-carriage.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a letter-feeding carriage, a platen journaled in said letterfeeding carriage and around which alternate superposed layers of webs and carbon sheets are fed, a carbon-carrier traveling with said letter-feeding carriage, the car.- bon-sheets I being attached to the carboncarrier, the carbon-carrier being drawn forwardly towards the platen as the carbonsheets are .fed around the platen, means for retracting said carbon-carrier relatively to said platen, and means 0 crating at the return stroke of the lettereeding carriage for energizing step by step said carboncarrier-retractmg means.
2. In a continuous 'billing typewriting machine, in combination, a letter-feeding carriage, aplaten journaled in said carriage and around which .alternate superposed layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, a carbon-carrier connected to said carriage, the carbon-carrier being drawn forwardly towards the platen as the carbon-sheets are fed around the platen, power-driven mechanism for retracting said carbon-carrier from the platen, and means for controlling the operation of said power-driven mechanism:
the latter including portions which travel with said letter-feeding carriage, and operable at different points in the travel of the latter.
3. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a frame, a carriage mounted to travel on the frame, a
platen journaled in said carriage and around which alternate, superposed layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, an extension of said carriage, a carbon-carriage mounted on said extension and to which said carbon-sheets are attached, the carboncarriage being drawn forwardly as the car hon-sheets are fed around the platen, a motor carried by the traveling carriage for retracting the carbon-carriage, and connections between the motor and the frame for energizing the motor by travel of the carriage.
4. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a letter-feeding carria e, a platen-frame pivotally mounted in sai carriage, a platen journaled in said frame and around which alternate, superposed layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, a carbon-carrier to which said carbonsheets are attached, the carbon-carrier being connected to travel with the letter-feeding carriage and being drawn forwardly as the carbon-sheets are fed around the platen, means for retracting said carbon-carrier, means for rendering the retracting means normally inoperative, and means actuated by the swingin of the platen-frame near the end of its orward movement for ren dering said retracting means operative.
5. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a letter-feeding carriage, a platen journaled in said carriage and around which alternate superposed layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, a carbon-carrier to which said carbon-sheets are attached, the carbon-carrier connected to travel with said letter-feeding carriage llt) and being drawn forwardly towards the platen as the carbon-sheets are fed around the platen, means for retracting said carboncarrier from the platen, said means comprising a spring motor operable at different points in the travel of the letter-feeding carriage, and means operating step by step for energizing said'motor by the performance of the operations essential to the typing of a succession of lines on a sheet.
6. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a frame, a letterfeeding carriage mounted to travel on the frame, a platen journaled in said carriage and around which alternate superposed layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, an extension of said carriage, a carbon-carrier mounted on said extension and to which said carbon-sheets are attached, the carboncarrier being drawn forwardly towards the platen as the carbon-sheets are fed around the platen, means for retracting said carboncarrier from the platen, said means comprising a spring motor mounted on the machine, and means whereby the travel of said letter-feeding carriage, independent of either the forward or rearward movement of the carbon-carrier, energizes said motor step by step.
7 In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a frame, a carriage mounted to travel on the frame, a platen j ournaled in said carriage and around which alternate, superposed layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, an extension of said carriage, a carbon-carrier mounted on said extension and to which said carbon-' sheets are attached, the carbon-carrier being drawn forwardly as the carbon-sheets are fed around the platen, returning means for retracting said carbon-carrier, said means comprising a spring motor mounted on the traveling'carriage, means whereby the travel of said carriage to the right winds up said motor to render said motor efi'ective, and
means releasable at will for restraining the forwardly as the carbon-sheets are fed around the platen, and means for retracting said carbon-carriage, said means comprising a rack on the frame, a spring motor mounted on the traveling carriage, a pinion movable with said motor and meshing with the rack, connections between the pinion and the motor whereby the travel of said car-- riage to the right independent of the movement of the carbon-carriage winds up said motor to render said motor effective, and means for preventing the unwinding of said lmpttor when the carriage travels toward the 9.- In a continuous billing typewritin machine, in combination, a carnage, a p aten journaled in said carria e and around which alternate, superposed ayers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, a carbon-carrier to which said carbon-sheets are attached, the carbon-carrier being drawn forwardly as the carbon-sheets are fed around the platen, means for retracting said carbon-carrier, said means comprising a spring motor mounted on the machine, means whereby the succcsslve movements of said carriage to the right wind up said motor step by step to render said motor effective, means for preventing the unwinding of said motor when the carriage travels toward the left, and means whereby further winding of said motor by travel of the carriage to the right is prevented after said motor is fully wound up.
10. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a letter-feeding carriage, a platen journaled on said carriage and around which alternate superposed layers of webs and one or more carbon-sheets may be fed, a carbon-carrier mounted on said letter-feeding carriage and adapted to have a carbon-sheet attached to it, the carbon-carrier being movable forwardly and rearwardly on said carriage toward and from the platen and being drawn forwardly as the carbon-sheet is fed around the platen, means for efiecting a release of the Webs and the carbons from the platen, and power-driven means operating between the letter-feeding carriage and the carbon-carrier for retracting said carbon-carrier to move the released carbons rearwardly of the platen.
11. In a continuous billing typewri-ting machine, in combination, a frame, a carriage mounted to travel on said frame, a platen journaled in said carriage and around which alternate, superposed layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, means for mounting the platen for bodily movement relatively to the carriage into and out of gripping relation with the websand carbon-sheets, an extension of said carriage, a carbon-carriage mounted on said extension and to WhlCh said carbon-sheets are attached, the carbon-carriage being drawn forwardly as the carbon-sheets .are fed around the platen, means for retracting said carbon-carriage, said means comprising a spring motor mounted on the machine, means whereby the vmovement of said traveling carriage independent of the movement of the carboncarriage energizes said motor, means for rendering said motor normally lnoperatlve,

12. In a continuousbilling typewriting machine, in combination, a main frame, a letter-feeding carriage mounted to travel on said main frame, a platen-frame pivotally .mounted in said carriage, a platen journaled in said platen-frame and around which alternate, superposed layers of webs and car.- bon-sheets are fed, a carbon-carrier to which .said carbon-sheets are attached, the carbon rendering said motor normally inoperative, said platen-frame being arranged to swung forwardly, and means actuated by said platen-frame near the end of its forward movement to render the spring motor operative to retract the carbon-carrier.
13. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a frame, a carriage mounted to travel on the frame, a platen journaled in said carriage and around which alternate, superposed layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, an extension of said carriage, a carbon-carriage mounted on said extension and to which said carbonsheets are attached, a driving belt mounted on said extension and connected to said carhon-carriage, said carbon-carriage being drawn forwardlv as the carbon-sheets are fed around the platen, and means energized by the movement of the traveling platencarriage on the frame for driving said belt to retract said carbon-carriage.
14. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a platen journaled in said carriage and around which alternate, superposed layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, an extension of said carriage, a carbon-carriage mounted on said extension and to which said carbon-sheets are attached, a driving belt mounted on said extension and connected to said carboncarriage, said carbon-carriage being drawn forwardly as the carbon-sheets are fed around the platen, and means energized by the travel of the carriage for retracting said carbon-carriage, said means comprising a spring motor mounted on the machine, and a driving member-connected to said motor for driving said belt, said driving member being normally in inoperative position out of contact with said belt.
15. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a platen-frame pivotally mounted on said carriage, a platen journaled in said paten-frame and around which alternate, superposed be into layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, an extension ofsaid carriage, a carbon-car riage' mounted on said extension and to I which said carbon-sheets are attached, a driving belt mounted on said extension and connected to said carbon-carriage, said carbon-carrlage being drawn forwardly as the carbon-sheets are fed around the platen, means energized by the movement of the traveling carriage for retracting said carbon-carriage, said means comprising a spring motor mounted on themachine, and a driving member connected to said motor for driving said belt, said driving member being normally in inoperative position out of contact with said belt and said platenframe being swung forwardly after a. set of forms has been typed, and means actuated by said frame near the end of its forward movement for moving said driving member b It operative position in contact with said e 16. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a platen-frame pivotally mounted on said carriage, a laten journaled in said platenframe-an around which alternate, superposed layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, an extension of said carriage, a carbon-carriage mounted on said extension and to which said carbon-sheets are attached, a driving belt mounted on said extension and. connected to said carbon-carriage, said carbon-carriage being drawn forwardly as the carbon-sheets are fed around the platen, .means emergized by the movement of the traveling carriage for retracting said carbon-carriage, said means comprising a spring motor mounted on the machine, and a pivotally-mounted driving member connected to said motor for driving said belt, said driving member being normally in inoperative position out of contact with said belt and said platen-frame being swung forwardly after a set of forms has been typed, and means actuated by said frame near the end of its forward movement for swinging said driving member into contact with said belt.
17. In a continuous billing typewriting' machine, in combination, a traveling carriage, a platen-frame pivotally mounted on said carriage, a platen journaled in said platen-frame and around which alternate, superposed layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, an extension of said carriage, a carbon-carriage mounted on said extension and to which said carbon-sheets are attached, a driving belt mounted on said extension and connected to said carbon-carriage, said carbon-carriage being drawn forwardly as the carbon-sheets are fed around the platen, returning means for retracting said carbon-carriage, said returning means comprising a spring motor wound up by the movement of the traveling carriage, and
. a pivotally-mounted driving member connectcd to said motor for driving said belt, the unwinding of said motor supplying the driving force for said driving member a spring for throwing said driving member into contact with the belt, means for normally holding the motor against unwinding, means for holding said driving member normally out of contact with said belt and said platen-frame being rotated forwardly when a set of forms has been i l ped, and means actuated by the platename near the end of its forward movement for releasing said first-mentioned holdin means to allow unwinding of the motor an for moving said driving member into contact with said belt.
18. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a frame, a carriage mounted to travel on the frame, a platen journaled in said carriage and around which alternate, superposed layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, an extension of said carriage, a carbon-carriage mounted on said extension and to which said carbonsheets are attached, the carbon-carriage being drawn forwardly as the carbon-sheets are fed around the platen, returning means for retracting said carbon-carriage, said means comprising a spring motor mounted on said machine, a one-way driving con nection between said frame and said motor whereby movement of the traveling carriage toward the right winds up said motor,

In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a frame, a carriage mounted on the frame, a platen journaled in said carriage and around which alternate, superposed layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, an extension of said carriage, a carbon-carriage mounted on said extension and to which said carbon-sheets are attached, the carbon-carriage being drawn forwardly as the carbon-sheets are fed around the platen, returning means for retracting said carboncarriage, said means comprising a spring motor mounted on said machine, a shaft for said motor, a member loosely mounted on said shaft and in frictional engagement therewith, said member being provided with a ratchet portion at its upper end asecond member loosely mounted on said shaft andx having a pawl portion at its lower end meshing with said ratchet portion and having a pinion at its upper end, a spring normally pressing said awl portion into engagement with said ratc et portion, a rack formed on said frame and meshing with said pinion, so that movement of the traveling carriage to said right drives said second member, first member and shaft to wind said motor, and movement of the carriage toward the left rotates said second member so that said pawl portion rides idly over said ratchet portion, and means for holding said motor in its wound position.

In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a frame, a carriage mounted to travel on the frame, a platen journaled in said carriage and around which alternate, superposed layers of webs and carbon-sheets are fed, an extension of said carriage, a carbon-carriage mounted on said extension and to which said'carbon-sheets are attached, the carbon-carriage being drawn forwardlg as the carbon-sheets are fed around t e platen, returning means for retracting said carbon-carriage, said means comprising a spring motor mounted on said machine, a shaft for said motor, a member loosely mounted on said shaft and in frictional engagement therewith, said member being provided with a ratchet portion at its upper end, a second member loosely mounted on said shaft and having a pawl portion at its lower end meshing with said ratchet portion and having a pinion at its upper end, a spring normally pressing said pawl portion into engagement with said ratchet portion, a rack formed on said frame and meshing with said pinion, so that movement of the traveling carriage to the right drives said second member, first member and shaft to wind said motor, and movement of the carriage toward the left rotates said second member so that said pawl portion rides idly over said ratchet portion, and means for holding said motor in its Wound position, each movement of the carriage toward the right serving to further wind said motor, the resistance offered by said motor when fully wound up overcoming said frictional engagement to prevent further Winding of said motor.
23. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a\ frame, a platen journaled on said frame and around which alternate, superposed layers of Work-sheets and one or more carbon-sheets may be fed, a carbon-carrier mounted on said frame and adapted to have a carbon-sheet attached to it, the carbon-carrier being movable forwardly and rearwardly on said frame toward and from the platen and being drawn forwardly as the carbon-sheet is fed around the platen, means for releasing the carbonsheet from the platen, a motor for retracting said carbon-carrier to move the carbon-sheet rearwardly of the platen after its release and one or more carbon-sheets may be fed, a carbon-carriage mounted on said frame and ada ted to have a carbon-sheet attached to it, t e carbon-carriage being movable forwardly and rearwardly on said frame toward and from the platen and being drawn forwardly as the carbon-sheet is fed around the platen, means for releasing the worksheets and the carbon-sheet from the platen, normally inoperative means for retracting said carbon-carriage to move the carbonsheet rearwardly of the platen after its release from the platen, and connections between said releasing means and said retracting means for rendering the retracting means operative upon operation of the releasing means.
25. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage movable laterally in letter-feed and return directions, a platen-frame pivotally mounted on the carriage for swinging movement forwardly and rearwardly, a platen journaled in the platen-frame and around which alternate, superposed layers of work-sheets and one or more carbon-sheets may be fed, 'aJcarboncarriage mounted on said platen-OH-rriage and adapted to have a carbon-sheet attached to it, the carbon-carriage being movableforwardly and rearwardly on said platen-carriage toward and from the platen and being drawn forwardly as the carbon-sheet is fed around the platen, said platen-frame being constructed to cause the platen to release the carbon-sheet when the platen-frame is swung forwardly, normally inoperative means for retracting said carbon-carriage to move the carbon-sheet rearwardly of the platen after its release from the platen, and connections between the platen-frame and the retracting means for rendering the retracting means operative when the platen-frame is swung forwardly to release the carbon-sheet.
