Be it known that I, VILLIAM E. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Iniproveinents in Trolley-Replacing Devices, of which the following is a specihcation.
The object of this invention is to provide a replacing device which shall include a channel element or elements having inner flanges each inclined in two directions, so that the trolley wheel is guided downwardly with reference to the transmission wire, and then inwardly or laterally under the wire, permitting the wheel to move to operative position under the action of the springs controlling the trolley pole.
A further object is to provide a wheel hav ing a central grooved portion and having formed on each side thereof an additional grooved portion of less diameter, either one of the portions or wheels last named being adapted to engage the trolley wire (when the main wheel is thrown off), for the purpose of carrying current and keeping the l car running until the trolley wheel is moved to normal position by the replacing device.
A still further object is to provide, in one form, a trolley wheel mounted in a harp rotatable on a vertical axis in a bracket made rigid with reference to the trolley pole, the base of the harp havin. a rectangular portion adapted to engage a shoulder on the bracket and limit rotary movement of the harp about its vertical axis.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

A transmission wire is designated 10, andv secured thereto by bolts 11 are channel elements 12 and 14, supported by transverse guy wires 15 and 16.
0The channel elements each include an outer wall having an'inclined portion 17 at the entrance end of the device, and a flange 18' deflected in two directions, at a right angle toeach other, as shown in Figures?)` and 4. The flanges or ribs are inclined downwardly from the entrance end to the opposite end, and deflected inwardly toward the inner wall of each channel member. The inner walls 19 are apertured for the bolts 11, and are grooved at 2O for engagement with the trolley wire. The elements 12 and 14 when mounted as shown therefore constitute virtually a single replacing device or structure. The approaching ends of the flanges 18, where the wheel is replaced, are designated 21, 22, and it will be observed from Figure 2 that the flanges converge because in the form illustrated a similar relation exists between the outer walls of the two channels for at least a portion of their length.
The trolley wheel 25 includes a central grooved portion 26, and grooved portions or grooved hubs 27, 28, on opposite sides of portion 26. Members 27, 28 are of less diameter than portion 26, and when the wheel is thrown off the wire it will usually engage one of the side grooves, maintaining the current supply to the motor. Under these conditions, grooved portion 26 engages one of the flanges 18. This position is shown in Figures 1 and 3. The central wheel 26 is now guided downwardly and inwardly to the first dotted line position of Figure 1, the edge of the wheel being Vbelow the wire. yImmediately thereafter the wheel passes from the replacing device to the second dotted line position of' the same view, and moves upwardly under the action of the resiliently' held trolley pole, thereby resuming normal position. If the wheel has but a single groove, it will be correctly guided, but current may not continue to flow to the motor, or may not flow without frequent interruptioin.
The harp 30 includes a rectangular portion 31 and a stem32 rotatable in apertured portion 33 of bracket or arm 34. A cotter pin 35 secures the stem and element 34 is retained by securing devices 36. The portion 31 has clearance with reference to the edges 37 oit shoulder 38, but angular movement about the vertical axis of the harp is limited by the shoulder, in view of the proportions of the elements;
Vhat I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a channel structure one side of which is formed with portions inclined in two directions with. reference to a trolley wire when the' channel is mounted alongside of the wire, and the other side of the channel being grooved for engaging the Wire.
2. In a device ot the class described, a plurality of channel elements and Vmeans for supporting said elements on opposite sides of. a' trolley wire, the outer sides of the channel elements each having an inclined edge :near one end, and having an inwardly turned Hange.
3. In a device of the class described, a plnrality of independent vchannel elements and means for supporting said elements on opposite sides of a. trolley wire, the outer sides of the channel elements each having a downwardly inclined portion extending from one end, and the channel elements each having an inwardly turned flange, the flanges converging toward one end.
4. The combination with artrolley wheel having a central grooved circumferential portion and grooved hub members of reduced diameter compared with the central portion; of a device to be mounted on a trolley wire and including means Jfor guidingfthe wheel.,V when either hub portion is il engaged by the wire, to normal position. with the central grooved portion engaging the wire.
