UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE R. CLARK, OF LIVONIA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,462, dated June 30,1874; applicaiion filed May 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEO. 1". CLARK, of Livonia, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in fences; and it consists in a doublehooked clasp, which extends around the posts and braces and binds them securely together, as will be more fully described hereafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
' to represent two vertical posts, and 0 two in elined side braces, all of which are arranged in relation to each other, as shown, and se cured firmly in the ground. Passed around all four posts and braces, near their centers, is the double-hooked metal brace (I, which is so shaped that one of the posts and one of the braces are encircled and securely held in position by the book, which is formed upon each end.
This brace braces the fence both lengthwise and sidcwise, and the greater the weight of rails or boards between the upright stakes or posts a the more firmly does the brace bind the posts and braces together.
The posts and braces may be left somewhat longer than usual, so that when their ends which are in the ground decay the posts and braces may be driven farther in without disturbing eitherthe fence or the brace cl in the slightest.
I am aware that a loop which encircles the two vertical posts is not new, and I do not desire to claim such. My clasp encircles the vertical as well as the inclined side posts, and holds them in such a manner that the greater the weight piled 'upon them the more securely they are held together.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the hooked brace or clamp cl, constructed as described, with the posts a and braces c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
- A In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th day of May, 187 4.
' GEO. R. CLARK. [L. s.] iYitn esses B. F. TRESCOTT, A. N. STEWART.
