To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. JOHN Y. HARIuNoToN, a citizen of the llnited States, and resident of hiazmnanic, in the county of Dane and State of ll'isconsin. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed Troughs: and I do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention appertains to feed troughs, and more particularly to a type of the same adapted for the feeding of hogs and the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide for a feed trough of the class specified. and one of a construction and arrangement adapted for the feeding of a large number of hogs.
Another object of the invention is to provide for a feed trough of the character mentioned, and one wherein the feed is delivered from a supply hopper thereof as required. and in which the delivery of the eed to the feed troughs proper is caused by gravity.
A further object of the invention is to provide for a feed trough of the type set forth, and one wherein the feed hopper is capable of being readily removed from the trough proper for purposes of thoroughly cleaning the interior of the parts. and wherein the feed hopper is capable of a certain degree of adjustment with respect to the trough proper.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view. the invention resides in the certain novel and useful construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described. set forth in the appended claim. and illustrated in the accompanying drawing. in which Figure l is a side elevation of the prefcrred mnhodiment of the trough and feed hopper.

Referring to the drawings the base of the device comprises a bottom wall 10. having oppositely and inwardly inclined side walls 11; vertically disposed ends Walls 12 of a Serial No. 474,476.
greater height than the inclined side walls ll. and extending on the longitudinal center of the upper face of the bottom wall 10 is a substantially semi-circular raised portion or division wall 13. forming between the same and the oppositely and inwardly inclined side walls 11. the feeding troughs proper.
A supply hopper is supported in position on the base. and the same comprises the oppositely disposed end walls 14. upwardly and outwardly inclined lower side wall sec tions 15. vertically disposed upper side wall sections 16 and upwardly and inwardly in clined top or cover sections 17 and 18, the top or cover section 17 being secured in position on the end walls, and the section 18 hingedly connecting the upper side edge of the fixed section 17. by means of the hinges 19. on the longitudinal center of the hopper. Hingedly connected to the lower edges of the oppositely disposed lower side wall sections 15. by means of hinges 20, are pairs of discharge doors 21 and 22 respectively. Each pair of the discharge doors 21 and 22 are mounted for inward swinging movement. and are normally supported in closed position in the plane of the angular inclination of the lower side wall portions 15 con'iplemental thereto by means of spaced bars or metal strips 23. the upper ends of which are secured inward of the lower edges of the side wall sections 15. by means of screws or rivets 25. The lower edges of the several discharge doors are adapted to closely overlie the adjacent portions of the tlllVEd surface of the diyision wall 13. when in closed position. so as to prevent the discharge of the feed material within the hop per outwardly into the feed troughs at the opposite sides of the base. and to gradually increase the discharge openings. when swung inwardly by the rooting action of the h0g5 during their feeding. Carried on the inner faces of the door sections 21 and 22 are a series of angularly and upwardly bent book like members 26, which act to loosen up the feed material within the hopper. when the doors are swung inwardly, and also act as stops to prevent the swinging of the doors inwardly and upwardly past the vertical center of the hinges 20, so that the latter will always gravitate to closed position, when left undisturbed by the animals or hogs to be fed from the troughs.
In some instances, it is thought that it may be desirable to feed a certain amount of material freely into the feed troughs without the manipulation of the door sections for such purpose, and to such end. the hopper is preferably mounted in position for adjustment vertically of the base. To admit of the proper adjustment of the hopper, the base is provided with a pair of standards 27 rising from the opposite end walls l2 thereof. and the upper ends of the standards are bifurcated to provide spaced arms between which is projected the opposite ends of a shaft 29, extending through the upper portion of the hopper on the longitudinal center thereof. The shaft ends are preferably suspended on suitable lengths of cables or ropes 30 the upper ends of which are secured to bolts 31 extending through the upper ends of the arms 28 and the lower ends thereof secured to and wound on the shaft ends, and a hand crank 32 is secured to one end of the shaft 29 for rotating the same in either direction and correspondingly for the raising and lowering movements of the same and the hopper carried thereby. For sustaining the shaft 29 and the hopper in adjusted position a series of vertically spaced aligning apertures 33 are formed in the arms 29 and are adapted to have selectively inserted therein pins 34, upon which the shaft ends are adapted to rest, when the .hand crank is released after manipulation. The shaft 29 is preferably in the form of a length of tubular stock or pipe. as shown in Figure 2. and at one end is provided with a closure plug or cap 29. as in Figure :3. which formed to provide square projection or lug 35 adapted to engage in a comple mental socket formed in the end of the hand crank to be attached thereto.
The upper open sides of the troughs at the opposite sides of the base are preferably provided with wire guards inclining upwards and inwardly from the top edges of the side walls 11 of the base. and these guards consist of a pair of longitudinally extending lengths of heavy Wire or metal rods 36, secured at their opposite ends to the end walls 12, one spaced from the other and are connected at spaced intervals by a series of cross wires or rods 37 substantially as shown. The openings between the wire are sullicicnt to allow the animals or hogs to have ready access to the troughs. for the manipulation of the discharge doors of the hopper during feeding.
.\s disclosed in Figure 5, I have shown the uprights which support the hopper as being formed of angle iron, the same comprising a pair of spaced members each having the openings 33' and their upper ends crunected by the usual bolt 31.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size. shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my inven tiou. what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
feeding trough of the class described having a base the central portion of which is provided with a curved raised portion extending longitudinally thereof, an upright secured to each end wall of said base. a hopper positioned between said uprights and having converging bottom walls coach ing with said raised. portion to regulate the flow of material therethrougl'i, a rotatable shaft passing through said hopper and up rights. a cable connecting the upper end of each upright to said shaft whereby a rotary movement of the latter Will move said hopper with respect to said base, and pins passing through each of said upriglits for sup 'iorting the shaft and hopper in its adjusted position.
