Description
' V 1,524272 Jan' 27, 1925' J. P. NEFF ARCH BRCK Filed May 12. 1919 W/ T/VEJSE Patented Jan. 27 1925.
'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
` JOHN P. NEFF, OF EAST OBANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR. TO AMERICAN ARCH COM- ram, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A. GOEPORATION OT DELAWARE.
ADGH BMW Application filed Ma 12, me. semi no. aeaaaa.
To all whom 't may camera:
Be it hown that I, JOHN P. NEFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of lEsseX and State of ti New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Arch Bricks, of which the following is a specification.
This inveition has'referenoe primarily to the provision of a brick of the character M specified which is intended for use at the side of the arch rest-ing at one end upon a circulation or arch tube and at the other end bearingvagainst a side sheet in the fire box in inclined position.
w The object of the present invention is to provide a -brick which will have a secure bearingupon tubes of various sizes and shapes or curvatures and which will help to hold' the brick more firmly in proper posi- W tion.
The above as well assuch 'other objects as may hereinafter appear, I attain 2 by means of a construction which I have-illustrated in preferred form in the accompany- W ing drawings wherein: a
Figures 1 and 2 are enlarged sectional details of my improved bricks as shown in Figures 3 and 4, illustrating its application in practice adjacent a brick such as is comau monly used between amb-supporting tubes; Figure 3 is a sectioial` View of the brick taken on the line 3-3 of Figure Figure 4: is another longitudinal sectional View through the brick taken on the line 4-4 of 'te Fig. 5; Figure 5 is a plan View of the underside of the brick, and Figura 6 is an elevation of the endwhich rests against the sup.- porting tubes.
Referring now more particularly to 4 Figures 5 and 6, it will be seen that I pro vide a brick which, at one end, the same be ing the end adapted to rest against the side sheet, has a narrow portion or edge as at 7 located at the middle of the brick, while on the opposite end adjacent to the sides of the bricks there are projections 8 and 9 with a recess between the said project'ions extending long the middle part of this end of the bric i As indicated in Figures l and 2 the rojections 8 and 9 are'formed with a kin of V-shaped hearing which gives two points of support upon the surface of the tube with a clearanoe space between provided by the recess 11 which is. formed with a smaller curvature than the curvature of the tube. The hearing surfaces of the tube engaging end or face of the brick are tangent to 'the tube and make line Contacts therewith. These surfaoes are inclined with respect to each other, and, as shown, make appronimately or substantially equal angles with the general plane of the brick.
The cut-away portion or recess 10 as indicated most clearly in Figure 4: is extended downwardly to the under face of the brick so as to provide a free passage closely adjacent to the tube. This aids greatly in preventing the choking up of the recess 11 so as' to preserve the spaced relation of the hearing projections 8 and 9. Above the lug 9 the surface of the brick is cut back as indicated in Figure 4 to the shoulder 12 so that when the brick is a-pplied as shown in Fi ures l and 2, it will have quite a range o? novement angularly around the center of the supporting tube without interfering with the adjacent brick 13.
I claim:
1.- A side brick :for tube supported fire box arches having at its -tube-engaging face tube engaging surfaces arranged and disposed to bear o'n'the tube at circumferentially separated points and making substantially equal angles With the general plane of the brick, and accommodable to -tubes of different sizes.
2. A refractory brick for tube supported fire box arches having tube engaging surfaces arranged and disposed to bear on a tube at c-ircumferentially separted points and making substantially equal angles with the general plane of the brick and accommoolable -to tubes of difierent sizes.`
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
