To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. KLAGGES, a
' citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York 1 n, in the county of 1 ew York, have invented a new and Improved Sewing-Machine Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for sewing machines and it pertains more particularly to an attachment for sewing machines employed for sewing on snap fasteners.
It is one of the primary objects of the invention to provide means for feeding singly the elements of snap fasteners to a sewing mechanism.
It is a further object of the invention to provide means for holding the snap fasteners relative to the sewing mechanism.
It is a further object of the invention to provide means for properly positioning the snap fasteners in the holder in such a manner that the needle of the sewing mechanism will at all times pass through the thread openings of the snap fasteners.
It is a'further object of the invention to construct such a mechanism so that the snap fasteners may be sold in a container, which container serves as a magazine in connection with the feeding mechanism constituting the present invention.
With the above and other reference is had to the accompanying ings, in which-- Figure 1' is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention;

The attachment comprises a base portion 7, to which is secured a vertically extending wall 8 adapted for engagement with the stop 6 heretofore mentioned.

As more clearly shown in Figure 2, this base 7 is provided with a slot 8 or other suitable passage, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more particularly described.
Slidably mounted in the slot 8 is a twopart reciprocating member 9, 9', and said reciprocating member has an enlarged portion 10 at the rear thereof, said enlarged portion 10 being provided with an operating knob 0r handle 11. This enlarged portion 10 is hollowed out as at 12, and mounted in said hollowed out portion 12, is a coil spring 13, one end of which engages the inner wall of the hollowed out portion 12, the opposite end engaging a vertically extending wall 8 of the member 9' heretofore mentioned.
The reference character 14 designates a suitable rigid bracket and said rigid bracket is secured in position upon thebase 7 by means of a screw 15" or the like. This bracket extends upwardly over the base 7 and the reciprocating member 9, and is spaced from the base 7 a sufficient distance to permit of a free passage of the reciprocatlng member 9 therebeneath.
The reciprocating member 9 is provided at its forward end with a hollowed out portion 15 adapted to receive the snap fasteners and upon movement of the reciprocating member 9 move the snap fasteners to the proper position relative to the sewing mechanism, which latter is not shown.
The member 9' has its forward end curved as indicated by the reference character 10, and said curved portion 10' of the member 9 together with the hollowed out portion 15 of the member 9, are adapted to form a recess, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
The reference character 16 designates the snap fastener holder of the sewing mechanism and said snap fastener holder is provided with a recessed portion 17. This recessed portion 17 has two forms, i. e., circular as designated by the reference character 18, and square as designated by dotted lines and the reference character 19 in Figures 1 and 2. This snap fastener feeding mechanism may be secured to the table 5 in any desired manner and is adapted to 00-' cupy a position at the end of the snap fastener holder 16 with its top face flush with the top face of said snap fastener holder.
Securedto the upper face of the reciprocatin member 9, by means of screws 20 or the li e, is a resilient member 21, and said resilient member 21 has its forward end curved as indicated at 22 and is provided with integral lugs 23, said lugs projecting from the under face of said'resilient member 21.
Mounted between the member 1 1 and the member 16, is a block 2 1, said block being secured in place by means of screws 25 or the like. This block 241 has a cut-out portion 26 and mounted in said cut-out portion 26 is a sliding wall 27, said wall being normally forced outwardly by means of a leaf spring 28.
The several snap fasteners are carried in a suitable tube or container 35 adapted to be received within the member lat heretofore mentioned, and as more clearly shown in Figure 1. The snap fasteners 30 therein ing the subsequent operation.
are adapted to drop by gravity into. the hollowed out portion 15 of the reciprocating member 9. As the snap fasteners are positioned within the hollowed out portion 15 of the reciprocating member 9 and said reciprocating member 9 is moved forwardly to position the snap fasteners in the member 16, the fasteners will engage the member 27 and the friction of such engagement will be sufficient to cause a rotation of the snap fasteners to a position Where the projections 23 heretofore mentioned will engage in the thread openings 31 of the snap fasteners 30. As these projections 23 engage .in the openings 31, further rotation of the snap fasteners is prevented and said snap fasteners will gradually be moved into position relative to the member 16 With the several thread openings 31 of the snap fasteners in the proper position.
The operation of the device is as follows:
With the magazine 35 positioned in the member 14, it is only necessary to grasp the operating knob or handle 11 and move the reciprocating member 9 rearwardly to a point where the forward end of the spring member 21 will clear the lower end of the magazine and permit of the lowest snap fastener in the magazine dropping into the curved end-10 of the member 9'. As the reciprocating member 9 is moved again in the opposite direction, the resilient member 21 passes between the lowest snap fastener and the one immediately thereabovc and serves as a bottom for the magazine 35 dur- Upon further movement the snap fastener 30 carried by the reciprocating member 9 is moved into position on the member 16 as shown in full lines in Figure 1-, the resilient member 21 serving as the bottom wall of the container during this operation.
After the fastener has been positioned in the member 16, the reciprocating member 9 is moved 1n the opposite direction and upon engagement of the reciprocating member 9 with the wall 8' of the member 9', the memher 9 will be moved rearwarclly simultaneously with the movement of the reciprocating member 9. As the vertical-wall 8' en-' gages the stop wall 6, the reciprocating member 9 is moved further than the member 9, the spring 12 being placed under complession to permit of such movement. During this movement the forward end 22 of the resilient member 21 clears the lower end of the magazine and permits a snap fastener to drop to position between the curved wall 10 of the member 9 and the hollowed out portion 15 of the member 9.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the present invention provides a new and improved magazine feed for feeding snap fasteners to the sewing mechanism of sewmg machines, and, furthermore, in addition -to feeding the snap fasteners the mechanism serves to properly position the snap fasteners relative to the sewing mechanism.
Although there. is illustrated but one embodiment of the invention, it is evident that various slight changesand alterations might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth but shall consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope ofthe appended claims.
, What is claimed is:
1. In a machine of the class described, a-sewing mechanism, a magazine for holding snap fasteners, a base formed with a guide slot, a pusher mounted in said guide slot, and adapted to travel beneath the magazine to singly discharge the snap fasteners therefrom and move them to the sewing mechanism, and means carried by one of the side walls of said slot for positioning the snap fasteners relative to the sewing mechanism.
2. In a machine of the class described, a sewing mechanism, a magazine for holding snap fasteners, a base formed with a guide slot, a pusher mounted in said guide slot and ada ted to travel beneath the magazine to sing y discharge the snap fasteners therefrom and move them to the sewing mechanism, and means for positioning the snap fasteners relative to the sewing mechanism, said means comprising a friction producing member mounted in one of the sides of said guide slot and in the path of travel of said snap fasteners, said friction-producing member serving to rotate the snap fasteners and properlyl position their thread openings relative to t e sewing mechanism.
3. In a machine of the class described, a sewing mechanism, a magazine for holding snap fasteners, a base formed with a guide slot, a pusher mounted in said guide slot and adapted to travel beneath the megazine to singly discharge the snap fasteners therefrom and move them to the sewing mechanism, and means for positioning the snap fasteners relative to the sewing mechanism, said means comprising a spring carried by one of the side Walls of said guiding slot and in the path of travel of the snap fasteners and adapted to engage the snap fasteners to rotate them to properly position their thread openings relative to the sewing mechanism. a

In a machine. of the class described, a sewing mechanism, a magazine for holding snap fasteners, a base formed with a guide slot, a pusher mounted in said guide slot and adapted to travel beneath the magazine to singly discharge the snap fasteners therefrom and move them to the sewing mechanism, and means for positioning the snap fasteners relative to the sewing mechanism, said mechanism comprising a spring mounted in the path of travel of the snap fasteners for rotating the snap fasteners to properly position their thread openings relative to the sewing mechanism, and means carried by the pusher for engagement with the thread openings of the snap fasteners when the thread openings are in proper position relative to the sewing mechanism for preventing rotary movement of the snap fasteners as they are delivered to the sewing mechanism.
