IMPROVEMENT IN ATMOSPHERIC HAMMERS Specification forming paIt of Letters Patent No. 152,391, dated June 23, 12:74; application filed I April 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM lVIANSON, of
. San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improved Atmospheric Hammer 5 and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved tool to be used more especially in any class of work which needs a series of percussive blows, and which work is not easy to standing machinery and it consists in the employment ofa cylinder having within it a 'piston which is moved by the action of a body of air contained within the cylinder, and

Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention, Fig. l is a longitudinal section of the cylinder, showing the piston and tool-holder. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the lower cylinderhead.
A is a long cylinder of small diameter, provided with twoheads, B B. \Vithin this cylinder the piston O is fitted to move, and an elastic cushion, D, may be inserted into the upper head to prevent shock from the stroke of the piston, although in practice sufficient air can be retained for this purpose by placing the supply-port a short distance from the end of the cylinder, so that the piston will pass it and cushion upon the air thus inclosed. The lower cylinder-head is perforated to receive the stem E, which carries the tool-holder F at its outer end, and is provided with a suitable. head, G, at its inner end to receive the stroke For convenience, the lower cylindenhead B may be made in two parts, so that after being removed from the cylinder it can be separated to remove the stem E when necessary.
The tool-holder is fitted to receive any sort of tool which can be operated by this moven1entsueh as drills, cold-chisels for cutting or chipping, or tamping-tools. The motive power for the piston will be the air contained above and below the. piston, and also above and below the piston of the compressing-cylinder, with which it is connected by the pipes H H in a manner similar to that described in my former application for Letters Patent. In the present case the pipes may be flexible, so that the tool can be operated at any point and in any direction.
As the main compressing-eylinder may be used for many purposes, it will be necessary to have some means of stopping this tool, whenever it is necessary, without stopping the compressor. This is easily effected by placing the lower pipe H a short distance above the end of the cylinder, so that when the stem drops down the piston G will pass far enough beyond the port to close it, and thus stop as soon as the cylinder is laid down.
The operation will be as followsz The cylinder A is taken in the hand, and the tool is held against its work, thus pressing the stem E back until the piston O is forced beyond the passage H, when it will instantly begin its reciprocating movements, striking blows upon the head of the tool, which need never be removed from its work. This is often of considerable importance, as in the use of a cold-chisel, and this is a point of great value in my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
