JOSEPH BRYERS. OF IEAVRE, MONTANA.
WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
e it known that I, Josnrrr BRYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Havre, in the county of Hill and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches and has for an important object thereof the provision of a novel and improved adjustable jaw wrench.
A further object of the invention is to provide in an adjustable jaw wrench a ratchet mounting for the jaws so that they may be rotated about a center without the necessity of disengaging them from the work.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be very cheaply and readily produced, which will be durable and efficient in service and a general improvement in the art.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention, a portion of the wrench handle being broken away;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective of one jaw of the wrench;
Figure 5 is a perspective of the second jaw of the wrench;
Figure 6 is an inverted perspective of the last named jaw.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the wrench includes a pair of opposed jaws 10 and 11, these jaws having coacting extensions 12 and 13 respectively, each of these extensions being of less thick ness than the jaw by which it is borne and being arranged at one side of the jaw, the jaws being notched, as at 14, to provide surfaces forming continuations of the extensions. The extension 12 is provided with a central upstanding rib 15 fitting in a similar groove 16 formed in the extension 13. The upper surface of the rib 15, the bottom sur face of the groove 16, and the surfaces of the extensions 12 and 13 and their continuations formed by the notching of the jaws are provided with coacting serrations 17 which, when the faces of the extensions are forced into engagement one with the other, prevent any relative longitudinal movement and maintain the jaws 10 and 11 in parallel relation and in adjusted position.
Each extension 12 and 13 has formed therethrough a longitudinally extending slot 18, these slots combining for the reception of a squared bolt 19 having a head 20 abutting the under surface of the extension 12 and having a length greater than the combined thicknesses of the extensions. The bolt is provided at the end of the squared shank thereof with a threaded extension 21 for a purpose presently to appear. The numeral 22 designates a handle having rotatably mounted therein at one end thereof a head 22 circular in form and provided on its periphery with a pair of ratchets 28 having oppositely facing teeth. The handle provides a pivotal mounting for a compound dog 24 one lug 25 of which coacts with one of the ratchets 23 and the other lug 26 coacts with the other of the ratchets, the ratchet engaged depending upon the position of the dog in which is mounted a spring 27 engaging the tail of the dog.
The head 22 has an axial bore 28 one end of which is squared for the reception of the squared shank of the bolt, as indicated at 29, and the other end of which closely fits the threaded extension 21 of the bolt. This threaded extension is engaged at the opposite side of the head from the squared portion of the bore by a thumb-screw 30 for applying strain to the bolt. One of the extensions, at present shown as the extension 12, has formed in its surface coacting with the other extensions sockets 31 in which are mounted springs 32 engaging the face of the other extension and tending to separate the extensions at all times. It will be obvious that if the bolt 19 is released by the thumb-screw these springs will tend to force the faces of the extensions of the jaws out of engagement so that the jaws are freed for longitudinal movement. The depth of the teeth 17 of these jaws being such that separation of the teeth is accomplished before the rib 15 is withdrawn from the slot 16 so that the jaws are maintained in align ment. With the jaws in separated relation they may be adjusted to proper position and locked in suchposition by tightening the thumb scr'ew '30. By manipulating the ratchet the engaged work may be rotated in either direction as desired.
It will be obvious that the engagement ot the shank of the bolt in the squared opening of the head 22 will tend to prevent relative rotation of the head with the jaws. In order to further assist in preventing such relative rotation, since the strain upon the bolt would be goons'iderabl l provide upon the under surface of the -head fa diametric-allyexten'ding rib 83gengaging ina groove 5-34 'li'ormed *u 'pon the'adjacent surface of the jaw 11 and its extension 13.
It being obvious that certain changes in the construction are possible without in any manner departing from the spirit of "my invention, 1 do not-limit myself tosuch specific structure as hereinbefore set'forth exeept'as hereinafter claimed.
-1. In a wrench, a pair of parallel jaws,
said j'aws having overlapping extensions prov ded upon eo'actino; faces thereof with serrations interengaging to mainta n the jaws in fixed relation, said extensions being each :provided with alongitudinally extending slot, at squared shank bo'lt directed through said slot, a head with which the "squared shank bolt engages, means at the oppositesi-de of the head from the jaws for "drawingthe bolt into the head to clamp the :jaws together against "the head, and means torseparating theicoacting faces of the exjte'nsions when the last named means is released.
2. In a wrench, a pair of parallel jaws, said jaws having overlapping extensions provided upon coacting faces thereof with serrations intrengaging to maintain the jaws together against the head, and means for separating the coacting faces of the extensions when the last named me ans'is re, leased, :one of said extensions having a rib extending into aslot of-ther'other ofV-s'a'id extensions and of greater height than the depth of the serrations-0f the jaws.
{3. In a wrench, a pair of parallel jaws, sa1d jaws having overlapping extensions provided upon coaoting faces thereof with' serrations interen-ga-gin-g to maintain the jaws in fixed relation,-s'aid extensions being eaoh provided witha longitudinally"ext-ending slot, a squared shank bolt directed through "said slot, a head with which the squared shank bolt engages, means at the opposite side or; the head from thejaws for drawing the bolt into the head to clamp the jaws together {against the head, means for separating the coacting faces of the ext-ensions when the "last named means is released,
one of-said extensions having a rib extending into a slot of the other ofzsa-id extensions and of greater height than thefdepth of the serrations of the aws, a handle ongaging said headand'rotatable thereon, said handle engaged portion of said head being provided with a pair of ratchets having oppositely directed ratchet teeth th'e handle having a dog selectively engageable with said ratchets.
In testimony whereof I hereunto 'aflix my JOSEPH BRYERS,
