To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL LPLOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tiffin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Load Carrier, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a load carrying attachment designed primarily for use in connection with well drilling apparatus and other wheel supported structures designed to carry heavy loads which are applied thereto after the machine has been set in position, these heavy 'loads being ordinarily too great to be supported by the axle or axles of the vehicle.
Heretotore it has been the practice to use timbers which have been placed upon the supporting wheels of the machine before subjecting the mechanism to the excessive load but, as these timbers are heavy and unwieldy it is sometimes the case that the workmen will leave them behind and apply the load or weight to the mechanism without properly supporting it. As a result the axle will break and the work be delayed at a considerable expense.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome this objection by combining with a vehicle or machine of the character mentioned an adjustable means whereby the excess load can be applied to the supporting wheels and taken ofi' of the axle without the use of some separate means which must be carried from place to place and set up in position for use.
A further object is to provide an attachment of this character which is simple and compact in construction and can be easily adjusted to secure the desired results.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates one of the axles of the vehicle provided with the usual supporting wheels 2, this axle supporting the bolster 3 on which is mounted the superstructure of the vehicle such, for example, as well drilling mechanism and the like. The superstructure has been indicated at 4. To the side sills 5 of the superstructure are secured plates 6 having inwardly extending flaiwes 7 at their lower edges which extend unc er the sills, these plates being fastened to the sills by bolts 8 or other suit-able means provided for that purpose. Extending laterally from each of the plates is an ear 9 having a slot 10 extending thereinto from its outer edge. A guideway 11 is formed along the slot and within the bottom of the ear 9, this guideway constituting a seat for a nut 12 in which is mounted an adjusting screw 13. The lower end of the adjusting screw is swiveled within a foot 1%, as shown at 15 while the upper end of the screw is provided wit-h a head 16 for engagement by a wrench or other suitable tool.
As shown particularly in Figures 1 and 2 the slotted portion of the ear is reenii'orced by means of an upwardly extending portion 17 through which the slots 10 extend.
lVhen the attachment herein described is properly placed on the vehicle the ears 9 will extend over but be spaced from the topmost portions of the wheels 2 and will be substantially in vertical alignment with the spindles of the axle 1. vVhile the machine is being moved from place to place the feet 14 are located above and out of contact with the wheels. When the machine is properly positioned for taking on the excess weight, however, the screws 13 are adjusted so as to force the feet 14 downwardly onto the rims of the Wheels 2 and by exerting sufiicient "force the entire Weight of the superstructure will be taken up by the screws 13 and transterred therethrough to the Wheels 2. Thus the axle 1 is relieved of excessive strain.
