Be it known that we, HENRY S. WOODRUFF and JAMES Q. MoTLnY, citizens of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the 6 county of'Essex, State of NewJe'rsley, and
New York, in the county of of New York, respectively, certain new and useful Calling Dials,
Bronx, State Improvements in of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to calling dials for automatic telephones and its object is to provide a simple and accurate 'dialrof the non-reverting type.
In accordance with the general features of this invention there is providedV a finger wheel adapted to operate through a motor mechanism which controls thel pulsing mechanism through the medium of planetary gear members and rotating discs. The operation of this mechanism is controlled b a double locking bar by which either the finger wheel or the pulsing cam and its associated mechanism is locked against rotation. These members are so arranged that they may be enclosed in casing members which will completely protect the mechanism from dust.

Running from the center of the diall and rotatably mounted in the casing member 5, and in the base of the shaft 10, is a rod 20 upon which a small external gear 21 is formed in `the sa e plane with the internal gear 19. Between these ears is set a planetary gear 23 to which is astened Sa restoring cam 24 formed about rod rotatably mounted thereon. The inner end of a motor spring 25 is attached to cam 24.

The ial mechanism is completely, enclosed by upper and lower casing members 4 and 5 other end, an extension 38 lfor locking stop cam v28. .A pawl 39 is also pivoted on rod 35, and acts to allow the movement of" the twelve toothed disc 18 in one direction, and to move thestop mechanism when the disc 18 moves in 'the other direction.` Shunt springs 40, 41 and 42 ,operated by extension 38 are provided to cutout the receiver and portion of a dial 4 `Above member l1 extension 13 which the casing 4 and which acts as a finger sto .and by a finger wheel 6 having finger holds' 7 therein through which projections 9 on the top of a hollow shaft 10 protrude. The described mechanism operates as follows:
Suppose that it is desired to dial number The user inserts his finger in the fingerhold in finger wheel 6 over numeral 8 on the number plate 17, and revolves the finger p wheel until his finger touches the finger stop 14. 'loothed disc 18, to which internal gear 19 is affixed, is thus locked against rotation by extension 36, while extension 38 releases stop cam 28 so as to' allow pulsing cam 29 and rod )2O carrying a small external gear 21 to rotate. By the same motion, extension 38 allows shunt spring 40 to form contact with spring 42 so that impulses may be sent over the line without the transmitter resistance being included. As soon as external gear 21 is allowed to rotate, the tension of spring" 25 on restoring cam 24 and planetary gear 23 causes the rotation of gear 21 and rod 20, together with the governor and cam members affixed to the rod. The gear train is so designed that a full revolution of the finger wheel, which has twelve open-y ings therein, in one direction will rotate A.restoring cam 24 and its associated gear and spring suliiciently to cause twelve revolutions of rod 20 in the other direction. Thus when number 8 is dialed, rod 20 and pulsing cam 29 will make eight revolutions before the return of restoring cam 24 to its original position. At each revolution of cam 29 contact is formed between springs 30 and 31 and an impulse is sent over the line, so that during the operation just del,
scribed ei ht impulses are transmitted before restoring cam 24 returns to its first position, at which time its cammed edge bears against the end of extension 37 of bar 34 and forces it outwardly so that extension 38 Ais forced inwardly, locking the stop cam 28 against further -revolution and moving spring 40 inwardly so as to form a Contact with spring 41 to allow the ordinary operation ofthe telephone. By the same movement, extension 36 is carried outwardly. along with extension 37, so that the linger wheel and its attachedmechanism is agai free to be rotated. v
The invention claimed is:
1. In a calling dial, a finger wheel, a motor spring tensioned by the rotation of the finger wheel, a pulsing cam actuated by said spring, a pair of impulse contacts operated by said cam and a member for automatically locking the pulsing cam against rotation-during the movement of the linger Arotation during t 1e movement of the wheel and for locking said finger wheel against rotation. during the? said impulse contacts.
2. Ip a calling dial, a finger wheel, a toothed disc rotated thereby, an annular gear carried by said disc, a motor spring, a planetary gear mechanism operable through the movement of said annular gear `to tension the motor spring, a pulsing cam actuated by the motor spring through the medium of the planetary gear mechanism, impulse contacts operable throu h the movement of said cam and a locking ar actuated (by a slight backward rotation of the finger w'heel for lookin the pulsing cam a ainst ger operation of against rotation during the operation of the pulsing cam for operating said contacts.
3. In a calling dial, afinger wheel, a toothed disc, an internal gear rotating therewith, a pinion centrally disposed with reference to said gear, a planeary gear rotatable about said pinion and within said internal gear, a motor spring, means operated by the planetary gear for tensionin said spring, a pulsing cam secured -to said pinion, an impulse contact in operativerelation to said cam` and autoxnaticnieans for locking the impulse .cam against rotation during the movement ofsaid finger Wheel and for locking said finger wheel against rotation duning the operation of said pulsing cam foroperating saidimpulse contact.
4. In a callingdial, a casing, a finger wheel, a combined finger stop and instruction card holder attached to, said casing,a sleeve aflixed to the finger wheel, a motor spring tensioned by the rotation of the finger wheel, a pulsing cam actuated by said spring, contacts operable `through the movement of said cam, a centrifugal governor arranged in saidsleeve and rotatable therein for governing the speed of said cam, and automatic locking means for alternately locking and releasing said finge-r wheel and said cam for operating said contacts.
