INVENTOR gLDlAWNIN BY ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 13, 1925.
UNITED srAr-Es PATENT orric s.
LOUIS D. LAWNIN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO N. O. NELSON MANUFAC- TUBING COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
FLUSHING DEVICE.
Application filed January 11, 1923.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Lotus D. LAWNIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, United States of America, have invented acertain new and useful Flushing Device, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as willenable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a flushing device and particularly to the mechanism for operating the discharge valve of such device.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective operating mechanism by means of which the valve may be operated by movement of the handle in either direction and in which the handle cannot be completely rotated.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one form of my invention, Fig. 1 is a front view partly in section of a flushing tank to which my invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, a portion of the tank wall being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a rear view, the tank wall being omitted and Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fi 2.
t5 indicates the flushing tank, which may be of any suitable construction. The tank 5 is provided with a discharge valve 6,
7. The valve 6 is connected by a rod 8 with an operating lever 9. The lever 9 is pivotally mounted at 10 on a bracket 11. The bracket 11 is provided with a square or other non-circular hub 12 entering a correspondingly shaped opening 13 in the tank wall. Formed in the bracket 11 and hub is an internally threaded opening to receive the threaded end 14 of a cap bolt 15. Passing through the bolt 15 is a. rock shaft 16, the outer end of which is provided with a squared end 17 to receive the handle 18 which is held in position by a screw 19. The inner end of the shaft 16 carries a crank arm 20 provided with a crank pin 21. The pin 21 is fixed with relation to the shaft 16, the
which, as shown in Fig. 1, controls a siphon Serial No. 611,958.
said shaft, the arm 20 and the pin 21 being preferably formed integral. The operating lever 9 rests on the pin 21 so that movement of the handle 18 in either direction, as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 8, will raise the lever to open the valve 6. It is desirable to prevent the complete rotation of the handle 18, to provide a positive open position and also to prevent the pin 21 from moving into dead center position in its upward travel and thus holding the valve 6 open after the handle is released. To accomplish this, I provide the bracket 11 with a stop 22 against which the arm 20 strikes as shown in dotted line in Fig. 3. As the bearing point of the pin 21 against the lever 9 difi'ers when the handle 18- is moved in different directions, the stop 22 is positioned asymmetrically with respect to a vertical plane passing through the axis of the shaft 16, so that the lever 9 will be raised to the same height whether the handle is moved to the right or left.
It will be evident that my mechanism while consisting of the minimum number of parts not only effectively performs the desired functions, but is neat in appearance and may be easily placed in position on the tank.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a flushing tank of a discharge valve therefor, an operating lever for said Valve, a shaft carrying a crank for actuating said lever by the rocking movement of said shaft in either direction, a bracket surrounding said shaft and pivotally supporting said lever at one side thereof, and a stop on said bracket engaging with said crank for limiting the rotation of said shaft, said stop being asymmetrically positioned with relation to a vertical plane passing through the axis of the shaft.
2. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a flushing tank, of a discharge valve therefor, an operating lever for said valve, a bracket pivotally supporting said lever and provided with a non-circular hub engaging with a corresponding opening at the tank Wall to prevent relative rotation, a cap screw bearing against the outer face of the tank Wall and threaded in said hub, a shaft passing through said cap screw and provided at its outer end with a. handle and at its inner end With a crank pinsituated at one side of the operating lever, and a stop carried by said bracket and situated at the other side of the actuating lever for limiting the movement of the shaft in either direction.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and aflixed lnv seal. 1 1' i LOUIS D. LAWNIN.
