- UNITED STATES: ATENT OFFICE.
wa A." HA LECK, or onioaeo, rttrnors; nss enon To SULLIVAN MACHINERY COMPANY, A oonronn'rrolt or MAss cHUsETTs,
FURNACE Application filed August 8, 1922. Serial No. 580,550.
To all whom it may concern. j Be it known that I, FRANK A. HA LnoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county 0t Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new andquseful Improvements in Furnaces, ,ot,wh1c h the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
" My inventionrelates to furnaces;
It has for its object to provide, an improved furnace, and more especially-an oil a or gas furnace, wherein the size ofthe combustion chamber may be adjustedas desired,
' and whereby, as" a result, reducing -the size of the combustion chamber after the furnace has been heated, a more efiective operationof the furnace may be obtained. if In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of lllustration oneuembodiment which my invention, may assume in practice. 7 j l V a-In these drawings f Fig; 1 is-a transverse sectionalv view of a furnace equipped with my improvement,
showing the combustion chamber adjusted todifierent sizes} 3 v j j Fig. 2 is adetailview showing theadjustable element and the means for holding the same in adjusted position. t
I have 'In this illustrative construction shown a furnace of the type invented by. one Sven T. Nelson and utilized .for heating a series of blanks, the same comprising a suitable frame 1v having a substantially enclosed combustion chamber 2 therein provided with a restricted fiueat the top thereof and an oil burner 3 discharging into, said chamber through one wall of the same andadjacent a blank stack 4, suitable mechanism including an ejector rod 5 being used to push out the bottom blank from the stackras desired,
and improved means being provided to vary thesize of the chamber ashereinafter described. a v
In my improved construction, it will, be observed that the chamber 2 is provided with an adjustable wall in the formof a deflector, hereinthe wall 6, oppositejthe burner 3,and that this wall is pivotedzatjf atits bottom in such manner as to enable itfto be moved about its pivot from the fulljaline po- ,sition indicated in Fig, 1.to the position indicated in dottedlines in that figure, and thereby materially restrict thesize ofjthe combustion. chamber, any suitable means,
bustion is proceeding smoothly," the Ycombustion chamber may be reducedlin size in such manner-as to permit of increased effectiveness in operation and the concentration of the heat upon the objector objects to be heated. For example, in the construction shown, it will be noted that the heat isthus concentrated upon the blanks, all necessity forheating theentire volume of thechamber being obviated. These and-other resultant advantages will, however, be clearly apparent, to those skilledin the art.
-While lhave in this application specifi- Q cally described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form ofithe same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from, its spirit or the scopeof the appended claims.
",What I claim as new and desireto secure by LettersPatent is: i a i v 1. A furnace including a combustion chamber and a fiue, and"means to vary the size of said chamber to vary the temperature therein without varying the size of said flue.
