Description

Jan. 13, 1925.-
J. HEINKEL FLOOR DRAIN Filed July 29. 1921 M ATTORNEYX.
Patented Jan. 13, 1925..
UNITED STATES JOHN HEINKEL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
rno'on DRAIN.
Application filed July 29, 1921. Serial No. 488,296.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN I-IEINKEL, a. citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State 5 of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor Drains, 0 which the following is a specification;
My invention has reference to floor drains, of that class which are to be found in the basement floors of buildings. Many of these drains are fitted with plates which are insecurely held in place, and which are liable to rock or slip upon being stepped upon. When thus used in schools and other places where children congregate, there is danger of injury to such children, resulting from the accidental movement of the drain-plate.
There is also danger of the plate being re-.
moved by the smaller children, leaving the opening to the drain exposed, with the risk incidental thereto.
The chief purpose of the present invention is to provide a means by which the drainplate can be held securely in place, Without any possibility of the same moving so as to cause injury to a person who steps thereon. The manner in which this is accomplished will more fully appear from the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a plan view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the plate shown in Fig. 1, on the'broken line 6- -6 thereof.
As shown in the figures the drain plate is formed of two sections, 17 and 18, having overlapping edges 19 and 20, and projections f When it is desired 21 at'the sides, adapted to enter recesses in the rim of the bowl. At a central point the plate sections are held together by a screw 23, passing through the flanges 19 and 20, and preventing removal of the plate.
to remove the same the screw 23 is removed and the plate sections raised along the line of the joint, whereupon the tongues '21 can be slipped out of the recesses in the rim. Even with the screw 23 removed there is little danger of the sections of the plate sliding, as the parts are interlocked at the joint.
it has been customary to ship the drains and plates separately, as a result of which the plates have become mis-laid or lost. \Vith the construction herein set forth, it is possible to have the parts assembled for transportation and storage, eliminating danger of loss of the plates.
WVha-t I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I
A device of the class described, comprising a drain inlet, provided with a rim having recesses in its opposite sides; a divided plate having overlapping inner edges, and provided on its opposite outside edges with tongues capable of entering said recesses, and locking said plate from release when the parts thereof are in an extended position; and a connecting means for holding said inner edges normally in engagement, with the parts of said drain-plate 1n extended position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN HEINKEL.
