To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, OKUM J. Mn'r son, a citizen of the United Statespand resident of Milwaukee, in the county of hlilwaulree and State of iVisco-nsin, have invented new and usefulImprovements in Tents, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tents.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a supporting structure for a tent which is of such construction that it may be readily dis-assembled so that the tent may be easily taken down and folded so as to occupy a small amount of space when not in use. I V
The invention relates particularly to a tent of rectangular construction; and a further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the sides of the tent, adjacent the top, are held outwardly so as to provide maximum amount of headroom in the tent. In its preferred form the invention contemplates a center supportingpost preferably of thesectional type which is so arranged as to form a support for a plurality of radially extending-bracespr arms; and
a further object of the invention is the provision of novel means for readily attaching the supporting arms 2, to or detaching them from the supporting post.
A further object of the invention is the provision of members adapted to be posi tioned against and securedto the walls of the tent in combination with means for readily attaching themto, or detaching them from the outer ends of the respective radially extending arms.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a frame the sides of which are adapted to be positioned against the respective walls of the tent and which comprise a plurality of sectional members removably attached together so that the frame may be readily taken apart when the tent is being transported from place to place.
The invention con emplates employing a plurality of guy ropes extending from the frame to suitable anchors in the ground; and a further object of the invention is the provision of horizontally extending member's positionedon the inside against the respec-' tive wallsof thetent intermediate the bot tom thereof and said frame, which members" are tied by suitable means to said guy ropes, thereby providinga structure which effectively prevents the side walls of the tent from sagging inwardly.
The invention consists in the novel constructions, arrangements and devices to be hereinafter described andclaimed for carrying out the above stated objectsand such other objects as will appear from the following description of certain preferred embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a tent embodying certain principles of the invention;

Referring now to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that the invention is illustrated in connection with a tent of rectangular shape having closed sides 15, 15 and 15 and a side 16 whi-h is adapted to be opened, the parts of said last mentioned side overlapping at l6 as is common in tent construction. The tent is provided with a central supporting post 17which is preferably of sectional construction and. comprises .a plurality of rods or tubular members 17 the adjacent ends of which abut against each their and areheld in operative position by sleeves .181 A cap 19* of leather other suitable material is placed on top of the post. 17 to reinforce the tent and prevent the post from tearing or wearing a hole through the canvas. In order to provide maximum head room in the tent, it is desirable that the side walls thereof be as nearly perpendicular as practicable and to this end the invention contemplates the provision of means for holding the walls of the tent, adjacent their upper ends, outwardly. In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 8, inclusive, a rectangular frame is'provided the sides of which are adapted to be held against the inner sides of the respective walls of the tent. Said frame is preferably of a sectional construction and comprises corner members 20 which are provided with two sockets extending at right angles to each other, said sockets being adapted to receive the adjacent ends of horizontally extending frame members 21 and 21*, respectively. The adjacent ends of the members 21 and 21 extend into the opposite ends of a sleeve 22, see Fig. 3. The sides of the frame thus provided .aresecured to the respective walls of the tent preferably by providing relatively wide, horizontally positioned loops 23 of canvas, or other suitable material, sewed, or otherwise fastened, to the walls of the tent, through which the respective members 21 and 21 are passed, see particularly Fig. 8.
The frame is supported by a plurality of radially extending arms 24 which are preferably provided with means whereby they may be readily connected at their inner ends to the supporting postand at their outer ends to the respective sides of the frame. To this end a sleeve 25 is provided on the supporting post, which sleeve being formed with as many apertures 26 as there are arms. A fastening member is inserted into the inner end of each of the arms 24 which may be in the form of a nail or a screw so as to provide a shank portion 27 and a headed portion 28 on the extremity thereof. The upper part of the respective apertures 26 is made relatively large to permit the head 28 to be passed therethrough, the lower part thereof being only wide enough to receive the shank portion 27. The post 17 is provided with recesses 29 adjacent each of the aperturesin the sleeve 25 so as to provide room for the fastening members to he slipped into place/Fastening members are.
the right hand end, having reference to Fig. 3, is made large enough to receive the head 3]., the remaining portion of said slot being only wide enough to receive the shank portion 30 of said last mentioned fastening members. The member 21 is recessed at 33, see Fig. 3, and the member 21 is recessed at 34, ,see Fig. 6, which recesses are in alignment when the outer ends of the arms 24 are to be attached to or detachedfrom the respective sleeves 22. The supporting member 21 is provided with a pin 35 which is adapted to enter a notch 36 provided in the sleeve 22 so that the member 21 is nor mally held with its recess 34 in alignment with the aperture 32 of the sleeve. The supporting member 21 is turnable in the sleeve 22 so that after the outer end of the adjacent arm 24 has been brought into'oper ative engagement with the sleeve and its fastening member has been moved as far as it will go toward the left, the member 21' may be turned sufficiently to move the recess 33 out of alignment with the recess 34, thereby locking the outer end of the arm 24 against movement relative to the sleeve 22.
Movement of the supporting member 21 relative to the sleeve 22 is preferably limited by providing on the sleeve an inwardly extending tongue 37 which is adapted to extend into a longitudinally extending groove 38 provided in the member 21, and having a transversely extending portion 38. This arrangement serves two purposes. It serves to prevent the supporting member 21 from' being pulled entirely out of the sleeve 22 so that the sleeve will not be displaced when the tent is taken down and it also serves, when the locking tongue is in the groove 38 to hold the supporting member 21 in its innermost position in the sleeve and to limit turning movement of the supporting member.
The sides 15 of the tent may be provided with windows 39 which may be covered by mosquito netting or the like. Drop curtains 40 are preferably provided for the windows and if desired these drop curtains may be raised and lowered from the inside of the tent by control ropes-41. 7
Each side of the tent is braced by one or more guy'ropes 42 attached at their upper ends to the side portions of the supporting frame and at their lower ends to suitable anchors (not shown) provided in the ground. In order to prevent the sides 15 of the tent from sagging inwardly, horizontally flextending members 43 are positioned againstthe inside of said respective walls, being secured in place by passing them through loops 44 similar in construction to the. loops 23, heretofore described. tive guy ropes, but when the curtains arev in their closed position, fastening means 46, positioned above the respective drop curtains, are attached to the respective guy ropes.
In the modified construction shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11 the brace arms 2 extend diagonally, their outer ends extending into the respective corners of the tent. Pins 47 are inserted in the outer ends of the respective arms 24 and are adapted to enter suitable apertures provided in angular members as which are positioned in the respective corners of the tent, said members being secured in place in any desired manner.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that a tent embodying the principles of the invention may be readily set up or taken down and will occupy a minimum amount of room when taken down since the radially extending arms and the members carried on the outer ends thereof for supporting the walls of the tent may be easily dis-assembled. It will also be seen that the tent provides a maximum amount of head room and when set up is rigidly and firmly supported in all directions.
I claim:
1. In a tent, the combination of a supporting post, a plurality of members adapted to be positioned against the respective walls of the tent, a plurality of radially extending arms for supporting said respective members, said post having a plurality of recesses and a sleeve provided with openings aligned with said recesses, and fastening members mounted on the adjacent ends of said arms and adapted to be inserted through the openings of said sleeve into said respective recesses.
2. In a tent, the combination of a supporting post, a sleeve surrounding said post, a plurality of members adapted to be positioned against the respective walls of the tent, a plurality of radially extending arms for supporting said respective members, said post having a plurality of recesses, said sleeve having a plurality of apertures in alignment with said recesses, and members mounted in the adjacent ends of said arms, each of said members having a shank portion and a headed portion on the extremity thereof, said apertures being relatively large at the top to receive said respective headed portions and relatively narrow at the bottom to receive said respective shank portions, for the purpose specified.
3. In a tent, the combination of a supporting post, a frame the sides of which are members adapted to be positioned against the respective walls of the. tcnt,a plurality of radially extending. arms carried by said post, each of said frame. sides comprising a sleeve and a pair of rods inserted into the respective ends of. said sleeve, and fastening members mounted. in the adjacent ends of said arms, each of said members having a shank portion and a headed portion on the extremity thereof, said rods being recessed and said sleeve having an aperture a part of which is adapted to receive the head portion and the other part of which is adapted to receive the shank portion of the fastening member, for the purpose specified.

5. In a tent, the combination of a supporting post, a frame the sides of which are adapted to be positioned against the respective walls of the tent, a plurality of radially extending arms carried by said post, each of said frame sides comprising a sleeve and a pair of rods inserted into the respective ends of said sleeve, and fastening members mounted in the adjacent ends of said arms, each of said members having a shank portion and a headed portion on the extremity thereof, said rods having cooperating recesses and said sleeve having a horizontally extending aperture a part of which is adapted to receive the head portion and the other part of which is adapted to receive the shank portion of the fastening member, one of said rods being movable relative to said sleeve, and means carried by said sleeve for limiting movement of said last-mentioned rod, for the purpose specifield.
6. In a tent, the combination of a support-- ing post, guy ropes attached to the respective walls of the tentand to anchors in the ground, horizontally extending members positioned against the respective walls of the tent intermediate the top and bottom thereof, and means tying said last ,mentioned members to said respective guy ropes.
