Description

VERNIER INSTRUMENT Filed Oct. 16. 1922 Q INVENTOR Patented- Jan. 13, 1925, i I "UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
uonms nosmm, or new You, n. Y.
vnnnmn INSTRUMENT.
Application 'fiIed'October 16, 1922. Serial No. 594,684.
To all whom z-v concern: I
Besit lmown that I, MoRnIs KLosNnR, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of Bronx, State of N ew- York, have made. a'certain new and useful Invention in Vernier Instruments, of which fth'evfollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to Vernier apparatus, and more particularlyelectrical ap-- paratus suchas condensers, rheostats, etc.
. This application is a continuation'in part of my application No. 540,783, filed Mar. 3, 1922 i The objectof the invention is to provide- 1 an apparatus or instrumentality which permits a plurality ,of adjustments, and which is simple in structure, economical of manufacture, and-efficient in operation'..
A. further object of. the invention is to 2 provide-an a paratus of this character of moldedmaterial which is positive inioperation, practical, indestructible, and presents a .very; pleasing appearance.
A further object of theinvention is to provide-separately movable control elements actuated. from a single handle, wherein positive action is secured, but nevertheless the operating mechanism 1s concealed from view.
Further objects ofthe invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists substantially in'the construction, combination, location and relative arrangement of parts, all as will. be
' more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown bythe accompanying drawing, and finally pointed out in appended claims.
Referring to the drawing: Fig. 1 is a front view of a vernier adjust- }.0 ment instrumentality embodying myinven- .tion as a plied to a vernier rheostat.- Fig. 2 1s a sectional view take-non the line J, 2, Fig; 1, looking in the .directionof the arrows.
- Fi 3- is a modified arrangement, showing thereto as the principles thereof may be it occurs readily applied to various other types of apparatus, particularly in the electrical art, but in the arrangement show-nus applied to a rheostat, reference character 1 designates what is commonly termed the base, which supports the rough adjustment wire member 2. The base is circular in shape, as is the resistance wire element 2, and the base has around the periphery thereof the Vernier wire 3 connected in suitable electrical arrangements with the resistance wire 2 and the binding posts 4. The foregoing struc-- ture is now standard in the art, and is shown and described in detail in my copending application, Serial No. 540,783, filed March 3, 1922, and per se forms no partof my present invention. consists. of the novel means for securing variable contact withthe resistance'wire 2 and the vernier wire 3 by means of the The present invention respective contact arms 5 and 6.- In thew arrangement shown, contact arm 6 is secured to the end of a a shaft 7, which extends through thebase and the panel, or other board, 8, on which the instrumentality is mounted. The end of the shaft 7 is secured to a handle or knob 9, which, in the-form shown, is substantially cone-shaped, being formed with a tapering bore 10 therein, the
and axially extending knurls. A set screw 11, preferably countersunk, secures the knob 9 to the shaft 7. The shaft '2' is provided with a' sleeve 12, which likewise extends through the base 1 and the board 8. A
graduated dial, or the like, 13, is secured to the sleeve 12 in any suitablemanner, for example, by means of the set screw 13, which is preferably countersunk in a coneshaped lip extension 14, formed therewith or secured thereto. The periphery of the inner wall of which is providedwith parallel conesshaped lip 14 is likewise provided with axially extending parallel knurlsof the same shape and size as the interiorknurls of the knob 9. The shaft 7 is loosely mounted on thefsleeve 12, and of sufiicient length so that the knob 9 may be pulled outwardly,
whereby the interior knurls thereof are out of contact with the exterior knurls of the lip 14 onthe member 13. Thereupon rotative movement imparted to the knob 9 will secure movement of the contact arm 6 alone, but when the knob 9 is forced towards the "bore 8 'so that the interior knurls thereof are -m mesh or contact with the exterior knurls of the lip 14 of member 13. then rotative movement of the knob 9 secures simultaneous rotation of the contact arms and6.
I have found the foregoing structure to contain many practical advantages over other types of arrangements for securing control of two or more movable elements of rotatable condenser blades which move' relative to the plurality of stationary condenser blades 21. The shaft 7 in this instance controls a single condenser blade 23. Many other modifications and changes in detail will readily occurto those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the claims. But having now set forth the objects and nature of my invention, and having shown and described a structure embodying the principles thereof, what I claim as new and useful and of my owninvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is, 1. In a vernier rheostat structure, and in combination with a rough adjustment resistance element and its contact finger, and a fine adjustment resistance element and its contact finger, and concentric shafts for operating said fingers, of knobs nested one within the other for operating said shafts, and means controlled by one knob for'selectively operating its respective shaft alone, or both shafts together, through its nested engagement with the other of said knobs.
In a vernier rheostat structure, and in combination with a rough adjustment re sistance element and its contact finger, and a fine adjustment resistance element and its contact finger, and concentric shafts for operating said fingers, of nested knobs for operating said shafts, and means for moving one of said knobs into and out of contact with the other to thereby move one of said shafts independently of or in unison with the other.
In a vernier rheostat structure, and in combination with a rough adjustment resistance element and its contact finger, anda line adjustment resistance element and its contact finger, and concentric shafts for operating said fingers, of a knob provided with a beveled external surface and secured to one of said shafts, a second knob secured to the other shaft and provided with a beveled interior surface and adapted to encompass at least a portion of said first mentioned-knob, and means for moving said second knob into and out of contact with said first mentioned knob.
at. In a vernier rheostat structure, and in combination with a rough adjustment resistance element and its contact finger, and a fine adjustment resistance element and its contact finger, and concentric shafts for operating said fingers, of a knob provided with a beveled external surface and secured to one of said shafts, a second knob secured to the other shaft and provided with a beveled interior surface and adapted to encompass at least a portion of said first mentioned knob, and means for moving said second knob into and out of contact with said first mentioned knob, said knobs being provided with means toprevent movement relative to each other when in surface contact with each other. i
5. In a vernier rheostat structure, and in combination with a rough adjustment resistance element and its contact finger, and a fine adjustment resistance element and its contact finger, and concentric shafts for operating said fingers, of a knob provided with a beveled external surface and secured to one of said shafts, a second knob secured to the other shaft and provided with a beveled interior surface and adapted to encompass at least a portion of said first mentioned knob, and means for moving said second knob into and out of contact with said first mentioned knob, the external surface of said first knob and the internal surface of the second knob being provided with cooperative knurls to prevent relative movement of said knobs when in contact with each other.
6. In a vernier rheostat structure, and in combination with a rough adjustment resistance element and its contact finger, and a fine adjustment resistance element and its contact finger, and concentric shafts for operating said fingers, of a knob provided with a beveled external surface and secured to one of said shafts, a second knob secured to the other shaft and provided with a beveled interior surface and adapted to encompass at least a portion of said first mentioned knob, and means'for moving said sei-ond knob into and out of contact with said first mentioned knob, the external surface of said first knob and the internal surface of the second knob being provided with axially extending cooperative grooves to prevent relative movement of said knobs when in contact with each other.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand on this 13th day of October, A. D.,
MORRIS KLOSNER.
