Be it known that I, MIKE MISKULIN, a subject of the King of Yugoslavia, residing at Zeigler, in the county of Franklin and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in steam boilers, and has particular reference to a plurality or battery of steam boilers and means associated therewith for independently cutting off the supply of steam from each boiler to a steam service pipe and also for simultaneously cutting ofi the steam supply from all of the boilers of the battery.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of a battery of steam boilers with a steam supply pipe for each boiler connected to a steam service pipe each supply pipe having a valve that is independently operable for cutting off the supply of steam from the boiler, and all of the supply pipes having valves that are simultaneously operated, completely shutting off the supply of steam from the several boilers to the service pipe.
With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

one of the valves operated by the weighted slide rod and the sprocket wheel associated with the valve stem, and
Figure '7 is a detail sectional view of a modified form of operating wheel associated with the valve stem.
Referring more in detail to the accom panying drawings. there is illustrated a pair of connected steam boilers 1 each having a steam supply pipe :2 connected to a steam service pipe 3 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the steam boiler 1 being provided with the usual. fire door 1 and sliding ash trays 5. Each steam supply pipe 2 is provided with a vertical leg 6 connected to the top wall of the boiler 1 and each leg having disposed therein spaced steam passage controlling valves 7 and 8.
The valves 7 are adapted for independent operation for shutting off the supply of steamfrom the boiler 1 to the service pipe 3, while the valves 8 are adapted for simultaneous operation in shutting off the entire steam supply to the service pipe. The operating mechanism for the valves 7 is shown more clearly in Figs. 1 and 2 wherein a pair of standards mounted upon the top wall of the boiler adjacent said valves rotatably support at the upper end thereof a valve stem rod 10 having a threaded portion 10 that is threaded through one of the standards 9, the inner end of the valve rod 10 carrying the valve that is disposed within the valve casing 7, while the outer end of the rod 10 rigidly supports a sprocket wheel 11. An endless sprocket chain 12 passes over the sprocket wheel 11 and upon movement thereof, the sprocket wheel is rotated for axially shifting the valve rod 10 for opening and closing the valve 7. It will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 1 that the valve 7 associated with each boiler is independently operable so that either of the steam supply pipes 2 may be shut off from communication from the service pipe 3.
Fig. 7 of the drawings shows a modified form of wheel to be used in lieu of the sprocket wheels 11, the wheel 13 having peripheral depressions 16 spaced by lugs 15 that cooperate with a link chain 16, the op eration thereof remaining the same as in connection with the preferred form.
The valves 8 in the legs 6 of the steam supply pipes 2 are adapted for simultaneous operation, the operating mechanism therefor embodying a relatively long bar 17 secured to the top "walls of the boilers as shown in Figs. 1. and 3, one end of the bar 17 carrying an end extension 18 projecting beyond the outer end of one of the boilers. The bar 17 carries perpendicular bifurcated posts adjacent the steam pipe legs 6, the posts being designated by the reference numeral 19 that rotatably support the outer ,end of a valve stem 20 as shown in Fig. 6
that is associated with the valve 8. The outer end of the valve stem 20 rotatably supported in the post 19 is threaded as at 21 and has mounted upon the threaded portion thereof between the furcations of the upper rod 24 and passes over a guide pulley 28 journaled in the slotted opening 23, and thence passes over the sprocket wheels 22 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3' with the other free end 26 thereof depending at the opposite end of the battery of boilers.
To maintain the valves 8 in an open po sition with the sliding rod 24 elevated as illustrated, a lever 29 is pivoted as at 80 to the bar extension 18 having an operating cord 31 secured to the outer end thereof while the inner end of the lever 29 carries a finger projection 32. A. latch pin 38 is attached by a cord 34. to the lower end of the bar extension 18, the latch when in its oper ative position having the cord section 34 thereof disposed beneath the weight 25 of the sliding rod, said latch. resting upon the upper side of the bar extension and engaged by the lever finger extension 32 as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Should it be desired to entirely shut off the supply of steam from the battery of boilers to the steam service pipe 8, the cord 31 is pulled down which. operates the lever 29 to disengage the linger extension 32 from the latch pin 33, at which time the weight 25 carried by the sliding rod 24, will lower said rod and operate the sprocket chain 26 for shifting the valve stem 20 to move the valve toa closed position relative to the seat within the valves 8. The valves 8 are returned to their open positions by pulling upon the end 26 of the sprocket chain 26 which will elevate the slide rod 24 and permit the latch 33 to be positioned for engagement by the linger extension 32 upon the lever 29. It will be seen that either of the boileis l may have the steam supply therefrom shut off from communication with the steam service pipe 3, or both boilers may be simultaneously disconnected from the serv ice pipe in case of injury to the boilers, or for purposcs of repair or otherwise.
V'Vhile there are herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed as new is 1. In steam boilers of the type described, a steam supply pipe associated with each boiler, a steam service pipe in communication with the supply pipes, a valve in each supply pipe, sprocket wheels connected to the valve of each supply pipe, at single section of sprocket chain passing over said sprocket wheels, a bracket arm secured to the boilers, a weighted slide rod mounted in the outer end of the bracket arm to which weighted slide rod the sprocket chain is connected, cooperating means carried by the bracket associated with thesliding rod for holding the same in an elevated inoperative position, said means including a lever pivoted to said bracket, a finger extension carried by said lever, and a latch piece having a cordconnection with thebracket with the cord positioned beneath the sliding rod and the latch piece disposed above said bracket for engagement by the lever finger.

In steam boilers'of the type described. a steam supply pipe associated with each boiler, a steam service pipe in communica tion with the supply pipes, a valve in each supply pipe, sprocket wheels connected to the valve of each supply pipe, a single length of sprocket chain operatively engaging the upper portions of said sprocket wheels, a bracket arm secured to one boiler-rand. extending laterally therefrom in alinement with said length of sprocket chain, a weighted slide rod carried by the outer end of the bracket arm, means for. connecting one end of the sprocket chain to the slide rod, flexible means adapted to pass under the weighted slide rod for retaining the same in its elevated position for preventing operation of said sprocket chain to actuate saidvalves, and means for releasing said flexible means for permitting said weighted slide rod to drop 'for actuating said valves.
8. In steam boilers of the type described. a steam supply pipe associated with each boiler, a steam service pipe in communica tion with the supply pipe, a valve in each supply pipe, a sprocket wheel connected to the valve of each supply pipe, a single length of sprocket chain operatively engaging the upper portions of said sprocket wheels, a bracket arm' secured to one boiler and extending laterally therefrom in alinement with said length of sprocket chain, a weighted slide rod carried by the outer end of'the bracket arm, means for connecting one to said bracket arm and having a finger extension adapted to engage the latch pin for holding the latter in a position extending transversely of the top of said bracket arm, and a pull cord attached to the free end of said lever for moving the lever to free said latch pin for releasing the Weighted slide rod.
