UNITED STATES EDWARD C. STANSELL AND PAUL FINOCCHIO, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
AUTOMOBILE RIM.
Application filed April 26, 1923. Serial No. 634,764.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that we, EDWARD C. Sraxsnar. and PAUL FrNocor-rro, citizens of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson, State of Aalabama, have invented certain new and useful lrnprovements in Automobile Rims; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rims and particularly to removable or demountable rims for vehicle wheels.
One object of the invention is to provide a rim of this character which can be read ily expanded or Contracted to be engaged within or removed from a tire.
Ahiothcr object is to provide a rim of this character having a removable section provided with means for releasably locking` the same. to the ends of the rim, between which said section is firmly held.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accon'ipanying drawing.
ln the drawing:
Figure 1. is a side elevation of a portion of a rim made in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view ot' the portion of the rim containing the. removable section. and showing the section locked to the ends of the rim Figure is a similar perspective view but showing` the removable section unlocked from the rim ends, and partly removed therefrom.
Referring particularly to the accompanyinn` drawing. 1() represents an externally channel split spring ring, which forms thc body of the rim. Between the ends of the ring is disposed a removable section 11, of a transverse sectional outlineidentical with that of the body of the ring 10, and providing a continuation thereof, when so positioned between the ends.
Secured to each end of the ring 10, at a suitable distance inwardly thereof, by means of the rivet 12, is a threaded rod 13. The threads of these rods 13 are extended in opposite directions and the threaded portions are received in the opposite ends of the internally threaded sleeve or tube 14, which tube is arranged to be rotated to draw the rods together or move them apart, for the purpose of liexing the ring 10 to engage or disengage its ends with relationl to the removable section 11.
Carried by the inner face of the ring 10, at corresponding distances inwardly from the ends thereof, are the T-shaped lugs 15, and pivotally carried centrally on the Corresponding face of vthe section 11, is a locking bar 1.6, the ends of which are suitably notched., as at 17. for engagement with the stems of the lugs, and beneath the arms of the heads thereof. llVhen the bar 16 is swung into engagement with the lugs 15, said bar extends in a direction circumferenti ally of he ring, andv is correspondingly cin-ved, longitudinally. to conform to the ciuvature of 'the inner face of the section 11 and the ends of the ring 10.
liv means of the turnbuclrle 13-14, the ring 10 may be flexed to move the ends towi, d or away from each other, and thereoy rmly clamp the section 11 therebetween. or permit the section to be easily removed. The bar 1G serves to prevent any movement of the section 11 relativo to the ends of the ring 10.
lllhat is claimed is:
,it wheel rim comprisingT an open spring ring having a channel in its outer face for the reception of a tire, the outer edges of the walls of the channel being directed laterally from theA ring, a portion of each of the laterally directed edges of the walls of the ring being removed adjacent the ends of the ring. and a removable section detachably secured between the ends of the ring and being similarly formed to the ring and with laterally directed portions on the side walls, the outer ends of the last named laterally directed portions being' projected beyond the ends of the. section and lying within the cut awayr portions of the ring` whereby to prevent lateral movement of the section.
In testimony whereof., we affix our signatures, in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD O. STANSELL. PAUL PINOCCHIO. litnesses E. P. SELLERS, R. C. THORN.
