IMPROVEMENT IN RUFFLING 0R PLMTING ATTACHMENTS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159.954, dated June 23,1874 application filed June 5, 1874.
To all rrhom it may concern:
Be it. known that we, Funnsnrck Srravsns and \\'rr.r.r.'..\r lllLDl-lllltANl), of Fort \Va vne, in the county of Allen aml State of lmliana, have invented certain new and useful Inr provemcnts in ltutiling or l'laiting Attachments for Sewing-Machines; and we do here b v declare that the following is a full aml exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which like letters refer to like parts in the ditfcrent figures.
To enable others skilled in the arts to make arnl use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
in the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction arnl operation of an apparatus to be used for the purpose of forming plaits in cloth, and presenting them in such a mannor that they may be stitched separately or to another piece of cloth, said apparatus forrning an attachment to a sewing-machine.
In the drawings, A represents a reciprocating bar, which is supported by means of suitable ways, in which it moves. Said ways a are formed on clamps 13. Bar A is provided on its upper surface with teeth, into which pawls b and 0 take. Said pawl 11 is actuated by arm (I, which is pivoted to rock-shaft g. lawl c is secured to and actuated by arm h, which is also secured to rock-shaft g. When motion is imparted to rock-shaft 9, said pawls are alternately forced in opposite directions. U represents an oscillating lever, which is secured to a vibrating arm, 1', pivoted, as seen at Ir, at its center, arnl on its lower edge is formed a V-shaped projection, m, which operates upon one of like form on the upper surface of spring I. When said bar G oscillates said projection m presses said spring downward, and passes over projection in thereon. 1) represents a stop, which is formed on reciprtxsating bar A, and presents an in clined surface to the inclined surface on the end of oscillating hart. 1-) represents an ad justable stop. which is also pmvidcd with an inclined surface. which act upon a like surface on the adjacent cml of bar (3. When rockshaft 9 is operated, movement is imparted to bar A through one of the pawls, the other, at the time, being disengaged by the oscillating bar L. Thus said bar A is carried forward until stop I) impinges the inclined surface of bar C, and forces it downward, and at the sanrc time carries projection m over projection m on spring I. The opposite end of said bar is thus elevated, and the pawl is disengaged. At the same time the opposite pawl engages the ratchet, and the movement of the bar is reversed, and is carried back to the stop on the opposite end, where a like result is produced. Thus an intermittent reciprocating motion is produced; but it is necessary, in order to produce the desired etl'cet, that the outward movement of the bar A be much slower than the return movement. This end is attained by securing the pawl to an arm having a shorter stroke than that to which the other is secured. It is also necessary that the length of the stroke should be made adjustable for the purpose of increasing or diminishing the fullness of the plaits. This object is attained by pivoting a recessed arm, n, on alirre with rock-shaft y; to its lower end pawl C is attached. Arm h is slotted so as to adnrit an adjustable pin. 0, which passes through recessed arm (I. Said recess is V shaped, as seen in the drawings in dotted lines. Any change of position of pin 0 causes a corresponding change in the length of said arm, thus increasing or decreasing the fullness of the plaits. II represents a stationary bar. which is secured to clamp ll by any suitable means. Said bar is made thin and flexible. and is so placed that its inner end extends nearly to the needle umler the foot-piece l. which is also secured to said clamp. J r presents a plait-folder, which is secured to bar A. and reeiprocates with it. Said folder rests on or immediately above bar ll.
\Vhcn cloth is to be plaited and sti ched to another piece. that to be stitched to the plans is placed under bar II in the usual manner. while that to be plaited is placed between bar ll and plait-foldcr .l. so as to extend under fwd-piece l. plait tolder J forms the plaits. and presenh them to the needle. when the are stit hed to The reciprocating motion of the under cloth. When pluits are to be made E, and spring I, each being constructed as singly the cloth is inserted as before, omitdescribed, for the purpose of alternately disting the under cloth.
engaging pawls b and c from ratchet-bar A,
What we claim as new, and desire to secure and thus reversing its motion.
by Isttcrs Patent, is-
1. Arm d, pawl b, arm h, and pawl 0, each constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
