WELL-DRILLING APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH R. S. Mo- CAR'ri-IY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklinville, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in VVell-Drilling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in well drilling apparatus and has for an object the provision of means whereby a number of wells may be drilled from a main station or main rig, means being provided whereby the drilling apparatus of each well may be either simultaneously or independent-ly operated.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel form of beam jack, whereby a maximum amount of power may be obtained for the drilling operation.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a multiple drilling apparatus which is simple in construction and efficient and economical in operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illlustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring in detail to the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention which is designed for the operation of drilling a number of wells simultaneously and for controlling the drilling operations froma single station, includes a main rig A and auxiliary rigs B. While two auxiliary rigs are illustrated, one or more may be operated from the main rig.
The main rig which may be substantially of the standard type includes a derrick 15, a crown pulley 16 and a drilling cable 17 which passes over the crown pulley. This drilling cable has connected thereto one end of a beam 18 and the latter is pivotally mounted as shown at 19. The opposite end of this beam is connected to one end of a pitman 20 and the opposite end of this pitman is connected to a crank arm 21 which is carried bv a drive shaft 22. This shaft has mounted thereon a drive pulley 23 which is driven by means of a belt 24. from a suitable source of power.
Mounted in suitable bearings is a main operating shaft 25 and mounted for free rotation upon this shaft is a hoisting drum 26 around which the drilling cable 17 is wound after it passes over the crown pulley 16. The drum 26 is locked to or released from the shaft 25 by means of a clutch 27, the said clutch bein connected by means of a rod 28 with a hand operated controlling lever 29. The hoisting drum 26 carries a brake drum 30 around which operates a brake band 81 for the purpose of controlling the operation of the drum 26. This brake band is connected by means of a rod or connection 32 with a hand lever 33.
Also mounted for free rotation on the shaft 25 is a bailing drum 3% and this drum like e m 26 B ea e a brake drum 35 which is engaged by a band 36 and controlled by a hand lever 37. The bailing drum 34 is adapted to have wound thereon a sand line or bailingca'ble 37 which passes upward over a crown pulley 38 and is connected in the usual manner.
The shaft has secured thereon a pulley 39 which is driven from a suitable source of power by means of a belt 40.
By means of the apparatus just described,
the drilling and bailing operation of awell at the main rig A may be controlled and for the purpose of; operating and controlling the operation of the auxiliary rigs B, the shaft-25 has mounted thereon for tree rotation auxiliary hoisting drums 41 and auxiliary bailing drums 42. The drums 41 are controlled by clutches 43 which are similar to the clutches 27' previously described and are further provided with brakes 44 ofthecharacter previously mentioned. The bailing drums 42 are similarly equippedwith brakes 45 and are controlled by means around guide pulleys 49.

F or the purpose of guiding the members 61 and 64 there is provided a plurality of cable guides C, which include a head 67 and legs 68 pivotally connected thereto. The head 67 has adjustably mounted therein a downwardly extending rod 69 which carries at its lower end a hook 70 for the reception of the members 61 and 64 so that the latter will be supported with a minimum amount of friction.
Also secured to the rings 63 are centering devices in the form of rods or cablesTO. These rods orcables are detachablyconnected to the rings 63 and their outer ends are similarlyconnected to anchors 71. This form of connection permits of ajbackward and forward movement otfthe members 61 and 64 during the drillingoperation and maintains the adjacent connected ends of these membersin proper relative position. In addition, either ofthe members 64 may be disconnected to cut out the operation of either of the auxiliary rigs B, while the connected members 61 and 64 will retain their proper operative relation.
The bailing drums 42 have wound thereon cables 72 which pass through yokes or pulleys 73 and around the pulleys 49 and. through guide eyes or pulleys 74 and over 7 crown pulleys'75, the latter being carried by the derricks of the auxiliary rigs B.
In Figure 11 there is illustrated; a, modified form of connection for the'beams 53 of the auxiliary rigs.- This comprises a branch cable 76 which extends from the member 64 and is connected as shown at 77 with the beam 53, meansbeing provided whereby this connection may be adjusted as necessary.
'In Figures 12 and 13 there is. illustrated means whereby a telephone line or cable may be connected between the main and auxiliary rigs. This comprises bracket arms 78 which are secured upon the upper threaded ends of the rods 69. These arms are provided with clamps 79 for holdingthe telephone wires,- while the telephone stations at the rigs A and B are indicated at S.
The inventionissusceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reservedto make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the apappended claims.
Having described. the invention claimed is 1. A well drilling apparatus a main rig including a drilling cable, means whereby the main rig maybe operatively connected to a source of DOWQ ',annLllXlllfiPy-IlgfilSO including a drilling cable, means operatively connecting the main and auxiliary rigs to what is provide for simultaneous operation of the drilling cables and means whereby the main or auxiliary rigs may be independently operated.

In a well drilling apparatus, a main rig including a drilling cable and a bailing cable, means whereby the rig may be operatively connected to a source of powerq an auxiliary rig also including a drilling cable and a bailing cable, means operatively connecting the main and auxiliary rigs to provide for simultaneous operation of the drilling cables and bailing cables, means whereby said drilling cables may be independently operated and means for independently operating the bailing cables.

In a well drilling apparatus, a main rig including a drilling cable and a bailing cable, means whereby the rig may be operatively connected to a source of power, an auxiliary rig also including a drilling cable and a bailing cable, means operatively connecting the main and auxiliary rigs to provide for simultaneous operation of the drilling cables and bailing cables, means whereby said drilling cables may be independently operated and means included in the main rig whereby the bailing cables may be independently operated.

In a well drilling apparatus, a main rig including a drilling cable and a bailing cable, means whereby the rig may be operativelv connected to a source of power, an auxiliary rig also including a drilling cable and a bailing cable, means operatively connecting the main and auxiliary rigs to provide for simultaneous operation of the drilling cable and bailing cables, means whereby said drilling cables may be independently operated and means included in the main rig whereby the drilling cables and bailing cables may be simultaneously or independently operated.

In a well drilling apparatus, a main including a pivotally mounted beam, means whereby the main rig may be operatively connected to a source of power, auxiliary rigs also including pivotally mounted beams, flexible members connecting the main rig and the beams of the auxiliary rigs, spaced means located between the main and auxiliary rigs for supporting and guiding said members and means for controlling the operation of the rigs.
6. In a well drilling apparatus, a main rig including a pivotally mounted beam, means whereby the main rig may be operat vely connected to a source of power, auxiliary rigs also including pivotally mounted beams. flexible members connecting the main rig and the beams of the auxiliary rigs, spaced means including vertically ad justable anchor rods for supporting and guiding said members and means for controlling the operation of the rigs.

In a well drilling apparatus, a main rig including a drilling cable and a bailing cable, means whereby the rig may be operatively connected to a source of power, an auxiliary rig also including a drilling cable and a bailing cable, means operatively connecting the main and auxiliary rigs to provide for simultaneous operation of the drilling cable and bailing cables, means whereby said drilling cables may be inclependently operated, said means embodying leg supported heads and anchor rods threadedly adjustable through said heads and means for controlling the operation of the rigs.

In a well drilling apparatus, a main rig including a drilling cable and a bailing cable, means whereby the rig may be operatively connected to a source of power, an auxiliary rig also including a drilling cable and a bailing cable, means operatively connecting the main and auxiliary rigs to provide for simultaneous operation of the drilling cables and bailing cables, means whereby said drilling cables may be independently operated, said means embodying leg supported heads and anchor rods threadedly adjustable through said heads, wire support i ng arms mounted upon said rods and means for controlling the operation of the rigs.

In a well drilling apparatus, a main rig including a pivotally mounted beam, means whereby the main rig may be op eratively connected to a source of power, auxiliary rigs also including pivotally mounted beams, flexible members connecting the main rig and the beams of the auxiliary rigs, centering devices located upon opposite sides of and having their inner ends connected to the flexible members, anchoring means for the outer ends of said devices, mean for supporting and guiding the flexible members and means for controlling the operation of the ri s.

In a well drilling apparatus. a main rig including a pivotally mounted beam, means whereby the main rig may be operatively connected to a source of power, auxiliary rigs also including pivotally mounted beams, flexible members connecting the main rig and the beams of the auxiliary rigs, centering devices located u on opposite sides of and connected to the flexible members and means for controlling the operation of the rigs I In testimony whereof I aflix my si nature.
