RADIO ADVERTISING SYSTEM.

Be it known that l, EDWARD E. CLEMENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Radio Advertising Systems, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyingT drawing;
My invention relates to radio, broadcasting systems, and has for its objectthe production of a system of this type which shall be available for certain classes of advertising and sales work, as well as entertainment. I attain my object by combining, in use7 radio transmitting and receiving apparatus with a telephone line or trunks, whereby the radio operator can reach the subscriber o-ver l vtwo paths, the subscriber can talk to the radio operator while listening'to the broadcasting', and finally the radio operator can connect the subscriber telephonicallyto the radio transmitter to broadcast the conversation. This combination gives in effect av complete communicating circuit made up of outgoing wave radiation and incoming or return wire conduction. the latter serving to localize and tix the former.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawingl in which the figure is a diagram of telephone circuits with the radio broadcasting and receiving apparatus and circuits applied thereto.
Referringto the drawing, A is a subscribers telephone station having line wires 16- 17 connecting it to terminals of a telephone switchboard in a central station C. A2 is another telephone station connected to the telephone central station C by trunks 55-56 which may for present purposes be considered line wires.` At the Station A' I provide a radio receiving set AP having the usual aerial or loop antenna and transformer 35 on the output side for connection to a loud speaker 36', and energizing batteries A1 and B1. As' supervision is desired Iover this instrument, I provide it also with a telephone transmitter T and a standard common battery talking circuit 59-60- 61-62-63, terminating on clips 64-65 or other convenient attaching devices which may be applied to the ordinary telephone terminals at station A. Condensers g and gx normally prevent the flow of battery current in these circuits. A switch H2 is provided lfor closing the transmitter T to line and also bridging the wires 57-58v of the loud speaker across the line. As shown, the same switch serves tofclose the filament circuit through battery A1, b-ut the two elements or" the switch may be made separate, so that either the filament circuit or the telephone circuit may be closed Separately.
At the station A2, multiple jacks JX are provided for the trunks or lines -56 if a separate radio switchboard is employed, or as an alternative, ordinary jacks or line terminals J2 may be made accessible to the radio operator, Takingl thejacks as typical of any convenient connective terminals, the operator at the radio switchboard may connect the line 55.-56 through a suitable am connect said wires'55-56 through a cord circuit or a suitable switch to lhis own telephone, not shown. l have indicated a key K in the operators cord circuit for this purpose.
rThe operation of the system is as follows:
Assuming the station A2 to be that of an advertiser, such as a firm engaged in the sale of' musical instruments. the radio set A is connected at the stat-ion of a subscriber whom it is desired to interest. or who may be willing to cooperate in advertising the product. A regular program or test operation may then be given. using ordinary and well known transmitters, ampliers. etc., for this purpose, typically indicated at T2. During this performance the radio operator has control over the telephone line which is supposed to be connected up as shown in the drawing. Switch H2 being closed at the substation. the operator can connect himself through key K and listen in on the circuit 5758 at station A. By
means of his own telephone he may also plifier to the broadcast transmitter T, or may to connect the same for telephonic Icom-y munication therebetween, and means for connecting the telephone circuit at either station `to the radio circuits, said means com-f prising a telephonic connection from the output side of the radioreceiver to the 'telephone circuit and a connection from the. telephone circuit to the input side ofthe radio circuit at the broadcasting station,
whereby the radio receiver may be supervised from the broadcasting station, and telephonemessages from the radio receiving station may be broadcasted. f
2. The system claimed in claim 1, with a separate. telephone transmitter connected to and forming part ofthe radio receivingapparatus at the substation and supplied with current over the telephone circuit.
'3. A system of the class described coinprising a broadcasting station and a radio receiving station, with a telephone circuit connecting the same vfor telephonic communication therebetween, the apparatus at said receiving station comprising a detector set, a receiver therefor, and a telephone transmitter, with means to connect saidl radio receiver and said telephone transmitter to said telephone circuit so that both direct transmission of original voice'waves and repeated transmission 'of sounds received through the detector set may be effected over, said telephone circuit.
4. A system of the class described comprising a broadcasting station anda radio receiving station, with a telephone circuit connecting the same for telephonic communication therebetween, the apparatus at said receiving station comprising a radio receiver and a telephone transmitter, with means to connect lsaid radio receiver and said telephone transmitter to said telephone circuit so that both direct transmission of original voice waves and repeated transmission of sounds received through the radio receiver may be effected over saidt'elephone circuit, together with a telephone recelver connected to and forming part of -said radio receiver, and means to connect said radio receiver also to the telephone line for the telephonic receivingl of audio frequencies thereover.
5.` A system of the class described comprisng atelephone central stationA and a subscribers station, with the telephone line circuit interconnecting them; said subscribers station equipment comprising a telephone `transmitter, a telephone receiver, connections therefrom to the telephone line, a radiophone receiver adapted 'to take -in high frequency' radio waves on its input side, and connected on its `output side to said telephone receiver,
whereby for audio. waves the radiophone and the telephone are connectedin common to the telephone line.

A system of theclass described comprising a telephone central station, a plu-A rality of subscribers" stations, line circuits intercon'necting'them, a sourceof common battery supply at the central vstation feeding current to said subscribers stations through said line circuits, and the combined telephone and radiophone receiver at subscribers station comprising the following instrumentalities: a vtelephone receiver adapted to be connected to'thelineto receive audio frequency or telephone waves thereover, a radio receiving and detecting set adapted to take in radio waves on its input side and on its output sidel having connection for audio transmission tol said telephone receiver. v

A system ofthe class described comprising a telephone central station, a plurality of subscribers stations, line circuits interconnecting them, aisource of common battery supply at the central station feeding current to said subscribers station through said li'ne circuits, and the combined adapted to be connected to the line to receive audio frequency or telephone waves thereover, a radio receiving and detecting set adapted to take in radiov waves on its input side and on its output side having connection for audio transmission to said telephone receiver, and an operative or connection also to the telephone line.
8. In a system of 4the class described coniprising means for telephonic or audio frequency transmission between two stations, and means for high frequencyA orradio transmission between the same stations, a receiving station equipment including telephone transmitter andreceiver connected to the telephone line, a radiophone receiver having high frequency input and low or audio frequency output, with a step down transformer coupling connecting the output side with the telephone receiver.
9. In a system of the class described comprising means for telephonic or audio frequency transmission between two stations, and means for high frequency or radio transmission between the same stations, a receiving station equipment including telephone transmitter and receiver connected to l the telephone line, a radiophone receiver having high frequency input and low or audio frequency output, with a step down transformer coupling connecting the output side with the telephone receiver, and the audio or telephone line circuit in parallel, whereby an operator at the transmission end of the line can listen in on the radio receiver at the receiving end, and can transmit and receive at audiofrequencies directly to and from said radio receiving station.

A combined telephone and radiophone receiving ,station comprising a telephone transmitter and a telephone receiver with means for connecting the same to a physical telephone line, a radiophone receiver having high frequency'input and low frequency out put and connected on the output side to said telephone receiver, a source of current supply for said telephone transmitter, a source of current supply for said radiophone receiver, and common switching means controlling the connection of said source of.

A system of the class described comprising a plurality of telephone subscribers stations, a central station, telephone line circuits interconnecting said subscribers stations and the central station, a switchboard at the central station for inter-conn`ecting subscribers lines for conversational purposes, combined radiophoneY and telephone equipment at subscribers stations connected in common to their individual telephone lines leading from the central station to said subscribers stations, and a central oce broadcasting station equipped with both telephone .are desi instruments and radiophone broadcasting means adapted to operate in conjunction with said subscribers instruments, a telephone line circuit connecting said broadcasting station with said telephone central station and the switchboard thereat, and means for connecting said line circuit from lthe broadcasting station through said switchboard to a subscribers line, the equipment at said broadcasting station being so arranged that the broadcasting YVoperator may receive andtransmit from and to both the radiophone'and the telephoneapparatus at subscribers station over the' connected telephone circuits without using any otherv than audio currents for which the said circuits ed, and can also communicate directly with said subscribers station by radio transmission, while using the telephone circuits for supervision. c

A radiophone exchange system com-- prising aradiophone central station, a radio switchboard, amplifying and transmitting means, and telephone instrumentalities for all purposes, at said radio central station, subscribers stations each equi ped with a radiophone receiving device a apted to respend to radio waves transmitted from said radio central station, audio receiving means at each subscribers station, a telephone system comprising a central station and subscribers lines extending therefrom to telephone instruments at the subscribers stations and circuit connections from said audio receiving means at the radiophone subscrib- 100 ers stations vto individual telephone lines, with means for connecting the switchboard at the radio central station through the telephonecentral station With said individual telephone lines selectively.

A radiophone exchange system comprising a radio central station, with transmitting means thereat, radio subscribers stations adapted to receive waves transmitted from the central station, telephonie trans- 1w mitting and receiving apparatus at said radio central station, a telephonie transmitting and receiving apparatus at each substation, a plurality of telephone lines anda telephone central station with means there- 115 at for interconnecting. said lines, 'and a common connection from the radiophone receiver and the telephonie apparatus at each radiophone subscribers station, to a telephone line, and means controllable at the radiophone central station to connect the same with anyof said telephone lines.
16. The combination of a plurality of substations, a central station, a radio broadcasting station and broadcasting apparatus thereat, a radio receiver at each substation,
a wire line connecting each substation with the central station, a wire line connecting the broadcasting station with the central station, means at the central station for connecting a substation with the broadcasting station for conversation through said Wire lines, means also at said central station supplying energy to theradio receiver at 5 the substations over said Wire lines, and
means at the broadcasting station for operatively extending said conversational conparatus. 10
