To. all whom t may. concern.; l
Be it knownA that 1 HENRY E. Mormon?, a citizen of the Unitedv States of America, re,- siding at Muskegon Heights,l in. the county ofV Muskegon and State of Michigan, haa/Te inventedv certain new andl useful Improvements` in rfool-Carrying ttachments for Metal-Working: Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.l
This invention. relates to. tool carrying attachments for metal machines' and more particularly to tool carrying heads of the character shown and described in my United States Letters Patent numbered 1,206,884, datedV December 5,A 1916.,
The object of the present invention .is to increase the efficiency ofheavy dutyl metal working machines by so constructing and` arrangingan attachment as to make the same applicable tothe performance vofa wide range of work and adaptable to ed'ect tool adjustments for various kinds. of' work;
A further objectis to provide an arrangement whereby a pluralityv of' tools is carriedl by a. single head, saidi head being quickly adjustable to bring any one of the tools into. operative position, andy said-tools being independentlyV adjustable to thework. It is also anA object to provide 'certaine other new andi useful features, intheconstruction andf combination of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described,
lVithlthe above; and other ends i-I1-view,the invention consists in providing a .head1 attachment for heavy duty metal working machines, whereby said' head' may be rota,- tivel'y adjustedj without detachment ofthe head from thema-chine and whereby the headj may be attached to or detached from the ram of a shaper with, facility..
The invention further consists in certain other new and useful features and in other matters hereinafter set forth. andV more parn ticul'arly pointed out in the appended. claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which y L Figure l is a side elevation of a device illustrative of the invention and showing the-same as applied to a draw-cut Shaper;
Fig. 2 is a front end elevation. of the device detached;
Fig. 3Y is a longitudinal vertical section substantially upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 9;
Fig. 4; is a rear end elevation of the de- Fig. 9 is a sectional detailthrough a fric- -tiona-l holding` mechanism,
v substantially upon the line 9&9 of Fig. 9..
VAs. illustrative of an application of the invention, in Fig. l of the drawings, a portion'of adraw-cut shaper of an oldi and well" known construction is shown, the frame ofthe Shaper being indicated? atA 1 and the work holding bed' which is positioned' at the forward side of the frame is indicated at 2'.' The usual reciprocating ram 3" is' carried by theframe and' entends horizontally above the bedV 2, said ram being reciprocat- .ed. by the, usual drivej mechanism: (not shown), and; ybeing adapted to carry cutting tools uponV its` freel end' for operating upon "'1` the workv which is secured in place upon the bed'below. Further .description of the drawcut shaper is deemed"unnecessaryas it forms no part of thisA invention', this invention relating" particularly to 'ai tool carrying d`evice or head' adaptedY .tobe attached to the externallyV screw-.threaded forward end of the ram` of Shapers where the cutting tool is reciprocated by the ram relative to the work or said* head maybe applied toother forms of heavy' duty metal working machines, such as planerswherein the work is reciprocatedt yrelativeV to the milling` tool.` or tools.
The tool carrying device' or head; illustrative of the present invention, comprises a circular drum 41 whichL is formed at its lower side with a half bearing to engage the end' of theram, said half bearing being internally screw-threaded` to engage the screw-threads formed on` the endl of the ram. lVithin the druml is a detachable half bearing 6 to engage the upper side of the screwthreaded end of the rain, said" half' bearing beingl also internallyv screw-threaded", and this half bearing is detachably secured withlill) lll in the drum by means of stud bolts 7 (see Fig. 4) on the drum at each side of the half bearlng 5 to engage openings in ears 8 on the sides of the detachable half bearing 6, nuts being provided on the studs to engage the ears and force the movable half bearing into engagement with the ram and toward the half bearing on the drum. rlhe half bearing 6 is further secured to the drum by. means of bolts 9 carried by the drum and extending through vertical slots 10 in an upwardly extending bracketporf tion 11 which is formed integral with the half bearing 6 between the ears 8 thereon and is adapted to engage the front end wall 12 of the drum. The half bearings and 6 thus receive the screw-threaded end of thev the end of the ram without the necessity for screwing it in place by rotative movement of the drum relative to the ram, the half bearing on the drum being simply engaged with the end of the ram and then the movable half bearing moved downward into engagernentV with the ram to interlock the threads on the ram and bearing-parts, and then by tightening up the nuts on the studs 'l and bolts 9 the two halves of the bearing are clamped firmly about the end of the ram and the screw-threads'drawn into interlocking engagement to firmly and rigidly hold the drum in place upon the ram and against rotative movement relative thereto. Quick detachment of the drum from the ram is effected by loosening the nuts on the studs 7 and bolts 9, when the upper half of the bear-- ing may be moved upwardly asuliicient distance to disengage the threads, and the drum slipped from the end of the ram. v
rllhe outer rim or circular wall 13 of the drum 4 is provided with an annular out* standing rib 14 and a suitable carrying frame or head 15, which is of circular outline to correspond with the circular formation of the drum, is provided with an outstanding annular end flange 16 having an internal diameter corresponding with the external diameter of the drum 4 to lit over said drum, and the end Awall 17 of this supporting frame or head is adapted to lie parallel with the face of the wall 12 of the drum, with the outer end of the flange 16 abutting the rib 14 on the drum. To lock the supporting frame in place upon the drum, a split ring 18 is provided having an inwardly extending annular fla-nge 19 to engage one side of the rib `14 and this ring is internally screw-threaded to engage the screw-threaded outer face of the flange 16. By turning the ring 18, the frame 15 is drawn toward the drum andthe flange 16 brought into firm frictional engagement with t-he rib 14, and then by tightening the nuts 20 upon the ends of a clamping bolt 21 which passes through openings in lateral ears 22 adjacent the divided ends of the split ring 18, said ring is drawn into close frictional and clamping engagement with the flange 16 on the frame 15 and with the drum 4. The supporting frame 15 being' thus mounted upon the cylindrical outer surface of the drum 4, may be rotated rela tive to the drum and ram 3 by loosening the bolt 21- and opening the split ring 18 slightly so that the frame and ring will turn freely upon the drum. The supporting frame 15 which carries the cutting tools as.Y hereinafter described, may therefore beerotated upon the drum 4 to bring Yanyy one ofthe cutting tools into operative position and this adjustment may be quickly effected, thus facilitating the operation of changing tools to perform a series of different operations upon the work, these several tools being set up in the head to perform the several operations upon the work in hand, and retaining their setting so that itis unnecessary to reset the tools for each operation upon each piece of work when a large num ber of pieces are to be machined in a like manner.
In the frame member or supporting head 15, is provided a transverse lslot or guide way 23 extending transversely of the head near the lower side thereof and in this slot two blocks 24- are mounted to slide therein, and secured to each block is a supporting plate or member 25Y having a plane outer face against which the inner face of a sup porting plate 26 engages, said platesv25 and 26 being detachably and adjustably secured together by a bolt 27 passing through an opening inthe plate 25 and through an elongated slot 28 in the' plate 26 located in an upward extension of the plate. `A clapper box 29 which is of rectangular form in crosssection is sleeved upon an outwardly projecting stud on the outer face of the plate 26,.said stud being of rectangular form in cross-section to fit within the opening of the clapper box, which box is pivotally attached to the stud by a pin 81 passing through openings in the sides of the box and through an opening inthe stud near the upper and outer corners of the box.
The plate 25 is detachably secured to the block 24 and the plate 26 wit-h its stud 3 is secured to the plate 25, by means of a bolt 32 extending through openings in the block plates and stud and is provided with a head 33 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4) at its inner end to engage a recess in the back of the block 24 and with a nut 84 on its outer end to engage the outer side of a plate 34 which is held by the nut Vand bolt firmly against the end of the stud 30 with the edges of said plate overlapping the end of lOU' CII
the clapper box to limitthe swinging movement of' the box in onex direction. The bolt' 32 thereforel forms means for securing' the Vplate 25 to the blocfk 24 and also for pivotally secu-ring the supporting plate 26 to the plate 25'. The lower side of the stud 30 is relieved or cut within the clapper boX to permit of aslight swing; ing movementv of th-ey cflapper box upon the stud about its pivot 3l andin eachside of this clapper box is formed a groove or channel 3-5 to receive a cutting tool 361, said tool being of rectangular forinin crosssection` and fitting within either groove, and to hold the tool in place in its groove, set screws 37 are provided to engage the ,forward edge of the tool and securely clamp it within its groove or channel in the side ol? the clapper bon. To normally 'ho-ld the clappe-r box turned upon itsI pivot and in a. vertical position, a; flat leafspring 38 is provided, said spring being secured to the lower side of the stud 30 within the `space formed by cutting away this lower side of thel stud and the free end of this spring is arranged; to ri'd'e upon the inner face of the lower Wall of the cla-pper 'bex to exert a pressure thereon for swinging the box upon its pivot. The tool 36 may be placed in the groove or channel eitl'ier side of either clappe-r' box, and as Vthese cla )per boxes Lare each carried by a separate slide comprising the block 24 and plate 25, which slides are movable transversely ofthe head Within the guide ways 23, said clappe-r boxes may be moved toward or from each other to adjustA the tools relativelyT and relative to Ythe vertical centerline of the head. When it is desired to bring the tools close together, they may be removed from the holding grooves in the outer sides of the clapper boxes to the grooves in the inner sides thereof and too-ls of a. suitable form provided to perform a particu-lar operation, such as cutting a deep narrow groove or facing the bottom and side walls of such a groove. Then the tools are set for facing the side walls of av groove, it is necessary, .in order to provide a clearance, that these tools be set at a slight inward incline toward each other and this setting is accomplished by slaclrening the nuts on the bolts 2T and swinging the supports for the clapper boxes, comprising the plates 26 and studs 30, upon the bolts 32 relative to the supporting plates 25. In a like manner, the tools may be given a reverse slant when employed in facing the outer side faces of an upstanding rib or wall on the work or other parallel side faces which it is desirable to face olf. As the head is applied to the ram of a drawcut shaper, the Working stroke is horizontal and inward or toward the frame lV of thr-l machine, and to relieve the drag of the tool upon the outward stroke o-f the rain, the
clappe-r boxe-sare piwetallv sup-ported, as previously described. V

Tliis'tool carrying head is particularly adapted for use 'in machining 'large castings, such as locomotive drive boxes, wl'iere it is'neeessary to Erniisliiparallel surfaces, plane oil' horizontal.-'sin-'faces,` tinish the sides andi 'bottoms .of grooves oiiffways, andperform number of similar." operations upon the sam'epiireee ofworlr, as one or more surtaeesmay be finished at the samer time and the tools quickly and easily adjusted or changed to perform the. se-veralioperations. It is necessary, however, in performing certain operations, to usel a vsingle tool and in order` that a single tool may be .used without thenecessity for removing; heentire head from the rana,and-substituting an;-V otherf therefor carrying 4 asingle tool, a third elapper box 402 is provided for hold-ing a single -t'ool` with the tooll extending radially of the aXi-saof the headaidclaprper being pivotallysupperted adjacent one corner thereof. upon .a f pivot pin 4l extending throughy :thebox and -th-rouglropenings in a pair of parallel ears 42 which are formed integral with :the frame .or carrying member 15 adjacent. .the vside thereofv opposite that 'at which the transe-vree Way 2i3'1is located, said ears extending outwardly Vfrom the outer side .of the frame... This elapper box has a .centralrectangular opening toreceive the tool 42.a which is held in place thereinin any suitable manner, as by a set screw 43 and to hol/d the clapper box turned upon its pivot into. engagement with au abutment bar v44, a coiled spring145., Fig. 3, is set Within a recess in the frame l5 to bear against the inner sideedge of theclapper boX; The abutment bar 44 is. secured by belts 46 to the outer ends of the-.ears 42,
spanning .the space between the ea'rswithin which the clappe-r box rotates, and thus the When it `'s desired to use a single tool Vin performing a certain operation upon. the
work, it is unnecessary to remove the entire Vvhead from the ram. and substituteanother therefor carrying a single tool, as the single tool 42a may be readily broughtA intoopera- 'tive position by rotating the carrying frame i5, as previously described, upon the drum 4. By a proper setting of the rotatable carrying frame l5 relative to thedrum, the
lll?) tool may be given the desired lateral inclination to perform the Work Yin hand.
To accurately hold the frame in any one of the several positie-ns to which it may be rotated to position the tools in the desired relationto the Work, a plunger 47 (Fig. 8) is mounted in a bore 4S provided therefo-r on the Wall 17 of the frame or carrying member 15 to project through said Wall into engagement With a hushed socket 49 in the Wall 12 of the drum 4, said plunger and socket being tapered to provide for accurate location and firm holding of the frame' relative to the drum. A stem 50 is provided on the plunger, Which stem extends outwardly through the kbore With a coiled spring 51 sleeved thereon between the plunger and a cap member 52 closing the outer end of the bore, said `spring exerting a force `to normally hold the plunger projected into its socket, and said cap 52 is formed with a transverse il-notch 53 in its outer face to receive a pin 54 carried by the stem` 50 and extending transversely thereof. By turning the stem by means of the handle 55 on its outer end, the ends of the pin 54 are caused to ride up the sides of the V-groove, thus moving the stem endWise against the action of the spring 51 and disengaging the plunger from its socket in the Wall 12, permitting free turning` movement of the carrying framey 15 relative to the drum 4. Any desired'number of sockets 49 properly positioned in the Wall 12 may be provided to provide for holding r the frame in the several positions for properly positioning the several toolsrelative to the Work. i
To frictionally hold the frame 15 against easy turning relative to the drum and also take up all possible lost motion, a friction disk 56 (Fig. 9) is mounted in a recess in the falce of the Wall 17 to engage the opposed face of the Wall 12 and this disk is adapted to be forced into contact With the Wall 12 by means of a screw 57 operated by a handle 58 on its outer end.V
By providing a tool carrying head, of the character described, applicable to the ram of a draw-'cut shaper, a Wide range of ivo-rk may be performed without the necessity for removing the head from the ram and substituting another therefor, and a quick and accurate adjustment of the several tools is facilitated by the arrangement, as the desired tool may be brought into operative position by a rotative movement of the head. Further, the application of the head to the ram and its removal therefrom 'is greatly facilitated by the employment of a two-part threaded bearing to engage the screwthreaded end of the ram.
