Description
R. P. ROSS.
Gage-Cocks.
Patented June 16, 1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT I. ROSS, OF BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA.
IM PROVEMENT IN GAG E-COCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,172, dated June 16, 1874; application filed January 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT P. Ross, of Bethlehem, Northampton county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Gage-Cock, of which the following is a specification:
'The object of my invention is to provide a gage-cock with mechanism which will afford a better medium for controlling the valve than the usual appliances; and this object I attain in the manner illustrated in the side view, Figure l, sectional view7 Fig. 2, and detached views, Figs. 3 and 4 of the accompanying drawing, Figs. 3 and 4 being on a reduced scale.
A is the body or chest of the gage-cock, having a tubular stem, a., threaded at the end, so as to be screwed into the front plate of the boiler, and within the chest is a tubular stem, b, against the end of which bears a valve, d, the cylindrical stem D of the latter bein g arranged to slide in a projection, c, on the chest. To the stem 1) is connected one end ot" the rod E, a detached view of which is shown in Fig. 3, this rod having a slot, t', through which passes a pin, G, Fig. 4, and to the latter is adapted the eccentric h forming part of the lever H, the pin being secured to the body or chest A of the cock, and the lever being confined to its place by a nut, m. On the rod E are two projections, p and q, between which the eccentric h fits snugly, so that by manipulatin g the lever 1I the rod E, and with it the valve-stein D and its valve, can be moved to and fro. When the lever, for instance, is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the valve has been moved against the tubular projection b, and steam is consequently prevented from escaping into the chest. When the lever has been elevated to the position shown in Fig. 1, however, the valve has been withdrawn from the end of the tubular projection, and steam will pass into the chest, and will escape therefrom through the tube j'.
The important feature of my invention is the operating of the valve by the eccentric portion h of the lever H through the medium of the rod E and its projections p land q. By this handled eccentric the operator has complete, decisive, and exact control of the valve, which he can so tighten to its seat that it cannot be displaced without operating the handle. The eccentric, moreover, will retain the valve in any position to which it may be adjusted.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the handled eccentric h, rod E, and its projections p and q with the valve l) of a gage-cock.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT P. ROSS. `Wituesses= JAMES EYNoN, WM. EYNoN.
