To all whom it may concern:
a Citizen of the United States, residing at Adamsdale, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in a SpoolCarrier for Braiding Machines, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in, a spool carrier for braiding machines and especially to that type of spool carrier set forth in my application for patent on a spool carrier for braiding machines filed November 19,1920, Serial No. 432,918., V
In the former application the invention was designed to dispose and arrange the entire let-off mechanism below the bobbin whereby all the weight would be so located as to produce a better balanced structure.
The present invention has for its primary object to provide a simplified structure in the leteofi' mechanism, the latter being arranged, as in the former case, adjacent the base of the carrier.
A further object resides in the association and mounting of'the bobbin-holding pawl and its disengagingmeans whereby the several parts are guided and held against being easily distorted or otherwise rendered inoperative." v
The invention further, resides in the features of construction and the arrangements and combinations, of parts hereinafter described and claimed reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein: V

the base 1 is a standard 3 which supports a bobbin support 4 thereabove and also a' bobbin spindle 5 on which is rotatably mounted the bobbin 6, said bobbin carrying at its base or lower end a ratchet 7 which has rotatable bearing on "the support 4. A'
posite side of standard 3, the latter being also slotted, as. at 13, to receive the arm 10.' The bell crank lever has a short arm 14 extending upwardly, and on the upper end thereof is secured a guide 15 which is designed to guidingly embrace or straddle the standard, as is most clearly depicted in the drawings. A pawl '16 is also, mounted on pivot 11 for engaging in theteeth of ratchet 7, being urged to its operative position by the spring pressed plunger 17 which is slidably housed or'guided in the lower end portion of the standard for'exerting outward pressure on the depending) extension 18 of the pawl. The lateral bobbin support 4 has its adjacent end formed with a cut-out 19 to guidingly receive the upper, end of the pawl 16. movement of arm 10 will rock arm 14 into, engagement with the pawl 16, and carry the same out of engagement with the ratchet 7 so that the bobbin'will be free to rotate. Downward movement of army 10 will permit the resilient device 17 to return the pawl 16 to its operative position.
Obviously, upward- The guide arm 8, above the support 4, is
provided with a thread eye 20, and at: its upper terminal with a delivery 'eye '21. Adjacent thereye 20, and on the inner side of the arm is a guide hook 22. The tension slide 23 is guided vertically on the 'arm8 and carries on its inner side athread hook 24, and on its outer side a similarhook 25,
the shaft or wire of which extends down.-
wardly at 26.and is pivotally connected to the arm 10. The bobbinvthrea d 27 in leaving the bobbin is directed over hook direct aid or the cushioning element or device 17. When a definite length of thread has been unwound from the bobbin the latteris' again arrested by the pawl 16.
Thetension responsive slide is depicted as being formed from a pair of cross wires, the 'wire 2526 constituting the vertical strandwhile the horizontal strand is looped about the guide arm 8 withboth ends being arranged toward'the inner'side thereof and with one end extended upwardly to form the hook 24. The slide, therefore, w uld present a cruciform in plan and may be con structed from an integral piece of metal or ,by separatestrands or sections soldered together as "herein depicted.
' The pawl 16 is preferably constructed from a single strip oi ne'tal bent upon itself substai'itially one-third of its length so that the extension 18 will be of double thickness. Thisc'onstruction also permits 01 the pawl having -a double bearing on the pivot 11 as shown clearly in Figures 4t and 6. The upper end is twisted at right angles and consistsof'a single thickness for engaging the" ratchet.
The foregoing construction is of a very simplified nature which is especially desirable in a bobbin carrier wherein all the letoff mechanism is arranged beneath the bobbin, The bobbin is readily removable without deranging the mechanism and the latter is also readily accessible for repair or'adjustmenti 'II'z ving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A bobbin carrier comprising a base, a superposed bobbin support, a standard spacing the latter from the former, a spindle upstanding from the support, a bobbin-coin nected ratchet rotatable on the spindle, and a guide arm extending upwardly from the base alongside the spindle and connected to the bobbin support, the arm being provided with a vertical guide slot intermediate tl e support and the base and having verticallyv spaced thread openings above the support, tensioning means slidably mounted on the arm for engaging the bobbin thread passing through the thread openings, a pawl pivoted to the standard and engaging the ratchet, and a bell-crank lever pivoted to the standard and having one arm'operable in the guide slot of the guide arm and con nected to the tensioning, means, the other arm 01" said bell crank lever having a forked part to guidingly straddle the standard and adapted to effect disengagement of the pawl from the ratchet.
2. A bobbin carrier comprising a. base, a superposed bobbin support, a 7 Standard spacing the latter from the former, a spirdle upstanding from the support, a bobbinconnect'ed ratchet rotatable/oaths spindle, an arm extending upwardly from the base alongside the spindle and connected to the bobbin support, the arm being provided with I a vertical guide slot' intermediate the support and the base and having vertically spaced tln'eajd-openings' above the support, tensioning means slida'bly mounted on the arm for engaging the bobbin thread passing through the thread openings, a pawl 'pivoted to the standard for engaging the ratchet and havinga depending extension, spring means engaging the extension for urging the pawl to its operative position, and means guided in the slot of the arm and connected to the tensioning means for being operated by the latter to disengage the pawl from the ratchet.

A bobbin carrier comprising a base, a superposed bobbin support, a standard spacing the latter from the former, a spindle upstanding from the support, a bobbin-connectedratchet rotatable on the spindle, an arm extending upwardly" from the base alongside the spindle and connected to the bobbin support, the arm being provided with a vertical guide slot intermediatethe support and the base anddiaving vertically spaced thread-openings above the support, ten ioning means slid'ably mounted on the arm for engaging the bobbin thread passing through the thread-openings, a pawl pivoted to the standard fonengaging the ratchet, saidbobbin support havin'g a cut-out part to guidingly receive the pawl, and means guided in the slot of the arm and operable by the tensioning means for disengaging the pawl from the ratchet. 4:. A bobbin carrier comprising a rotatably supported bobbin hol'der, a support therefor, means for arresting the holder against movement, a guide arm, a slide support, a bobbin-connected ratchet rotatably mounted thereon said support having spaced guide parts extending beyond the periphery of the ratchet, a pivotally mounted pawl formed from a single strip of metal bent upon itself to provide a double thickness at one end and a single thickness at the opposite end, the latter end being guided by said spaced guide parts of the support and engaging the ratchet, and said double thickness and extending below the pivotal mounting of the pawl, resilient means exerting pressure against the latter end, and means operable according to the tension on the bobbin thread of disengaging the pawl from the ratchet.
6. A bobbin carrier comprising a base, a standard rising therefrom, a bobbin support on the standard, a guide arm rising from the base up along side of the bobbin, threadtension means guided by the arm, said arm and standard being provided with registering slots, a bell crank lever having one arm guided in the registering slots and connected to the tension means, and bobbin-arresting means adapted to be rendered inoperative by the arm of the lever. a
7. In a bobbin carrier, a base, a vertical bobbin support on the base, a bobbin ratchet on the support, a. pawl for the ratchet pivoted between its ends tothe support, spring means for tensioning the lower end of the pawl, a bell crank lever pivoted to the support and having av vertical arm formed to engage the upper end of the pawl, a guide connected to the said arm and straddling the support, a vertical arm on the base, a thread engaged slide onsaid last named arm, and a connection between the slide and the other arm of the bell crank lever.
8. In combination with a rotatable bobbin carrying ratchet, and a vertical arm having thread engaging parts, a vertically movable slide on the arm having thread engaging parts whereby to actuate the slide by the thread movements, a pawl for rendering the ratchet inoperative, a pivoted knock-off device for the pawl, and means connecting the knock-off device to the slide for positively rocking the knock-off device about its pivot upon both upward and downward movement of the slide.
9. In combination with a rotatable bobbin carrying ratchet, and a vertical arm having thread engaging parts, a vertically -movable slide on the arm having thread engaging parts whereby to actuate the slide by the thread movements, a vertically disposed pawl formed to engage the ratchet, a bell crank lever, having a vertical arm constituting a knock-0H device to engage and render the pawl inoperative, and a rod connected to the slide and to the other arm of the bell crank lever to actuate the same.

In a bobbin carrier, a rotatably sup-' ported bobbin holder, means for arresting movement of the holder, means to actuate the arresting means, a guide arm and a slide on the arm including a member embracing the arm and having an upwardly extended part to form a thread engaging part, a vertical member connected to the first member and having a thread engaging parton its upper end and having its lower end projecting downwardly, below the slide, and means to connect the lower end of the vertical member to the said means for actuating the arresting means.
12. In combination with a rotatable bobbin carrying ratchet having horizontal teeth and a vertical arm having thread engaging parts, a vertically movable slide on the arm having thread engaging parts whereby to actuate the slide by the thread movements, a pivoted rendering the ratchet inoperative, a knock- I oft device having a part engaged with the pawl between the pivot and upper end thereof, and means connected to the slide and connected to the knockoff device for actu-.

In combination with a vertical support, and a rotatable bobbin carrying ratchet thereon, a vertical arm having thread en'- gaging parts, a vertically movable slide on the arm having thread engaging parts whereby to actuate the slide by the thread movements, apawl for rendering the ratchet inoperative, a knock-ofiidevice for the pawl,
guiding means connected to the knock-off device and engaging saidv vertical support, and means connecting the knock-off device to the slide for positively actuating the knock-off device.
