Description

Patented Bee. 3l), 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFlCE.
JAMES W. FARRELL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO I-IOMAN & CO., A PARTNER- SHIP CONSISTING OF JOSEPH T. HUMAN AND LOUIS I-IOMAN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
CANDLE MOLD.
Application filed September 20, 1922. Serial No. 589,469.
To ZZ @1f/1,0712. t may concern Be it known that l, JAMES W. lh-iniziati., a citizen of the United States, and residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Candle Molds, ot' which the following specification is a full disclosure.
T his invention relates to candle molds for producing a candle in simulation of a handshaped candle, which displays the linger impressions, and extremely tapering from base to tip, or a candle formed by dipping, having cavities and protuberances upon its surface, and has as one 0f its objectsV the provision of a non-parting cylindrical candle mold, with its wall surface indented or embossed, and the surfaces of all indentations or protuberances open to or tapering in the line of draft for a free withdrawal of the molded article from the mold.A
Other objects and certain advantages will be more fully described in a description of the drawings, forming a part of this application, in which:
Figure l is an exterior view of the mold.
Figure 2 is a central .longitudinal section of the saine.
.Figure 3 is an enlarged detail central longitudinal section showing the relation of the depressions both to the generating line of the bore and to the central long axis thereof.
Figure 4 is a cross section indicating the circumferentially disposed depressions and elevation of the mold.
The bore surface of the mold herein has the contour of a cone, such a ligure being generated by a straight line, the generatrix, moving so as to constantly pass through the directrix (in this case a circle) while containing the given point called the vertex. The upper portions of the depressions are in the plane of generation of the bore surface and develop downwardly or toward the small end of the bore, into surfaces substantially parallel with the bore axis as herebelow more fully explained.
The invention is, however, also applicable to the. production of uneven surfaced candles of pyramidal contour.
In order to more clearly illustrate the relations of the elevations and depressions, the contours shown in Figures 2 and have been exaggerated, it being understood that the lines are not as abrupt as therein shown. The depths are slight and the depressions and elevations merge gradually into oneanother.
l designates a tubular candle mold having a tapered bore 2 and provided with depressions and elevations 3, preferably of irregular configuration, varying area9 and irregularly disposed throughout the length and circumference of the interior tif the bore, the interior surface of the bore beingl designed to form a molded article simulating the handsmade candle whereon the linger depressions of the'maker are visible. The depressions are related to one another, to the generating line of the bore, and to the long axis of the bore in such a manner that the shallow or upper end of each depression beginning atand lying substantially upon or in the plane of generation of the bore. the remaining portions of the surfaces of the depressions lying beyond the plane of bore generation, and being substantially parallel with the central axis of the bore. As a result of this construction the molded articleV may be withdrawn from the mold since the projecting surfaces of the article are either tapering or iioirobstruetive to the direction of draft. The mold l is provided exteriorly at the top as at -lwith threads, and at the bottom with a reduced threaded extension 5 as means for attaching the mold to a candle molding machine, a plurality of such molds being used therein.
This mold construction may be applied for molding other articles of a similar uw ture having depressions and elevations of either regular or irregular contour.
The mold is of a solid or non-separable type and all of the cavities or protuberances have their surface tapering or nonobstructing to the mold draft, so that the molded article can be bodily extracted or withdrawn from the mold.
Having described my invention, I claim:
l. A candle mold, having a tapering bore, said bore having depressions of irregular contour, the upper ends of the depressions lying in the plane of generation of the bore, and the surfaces of the depressions being substantially parallel with the long axis of the bore whereby provision is made for the unobstructed withdrawal of the molded article.
2. A candle mold, having a conical bore,
said bore having depressions therein, the upper portions of said depressions lying Within the plane of generation of the bore surface, and the surfaces of said depres sions Ybeing substantially Vparallel with the long aXis of the bore. Y
3. A candle mold, having a conical bore, said bore having depressions therein, the surfaces of said depressions substantially parallel with the long axis of the bore and disposed infrelati-vely stepped relation, the
shallow port-ionsrof the depressions lying` in the plane of generation of the bore surface, and the deeper portions, outside of v axis of the bore.
o. A candle mold, having a conical bore, said bore having depressed areas therein,
the shallow portion of each depressed areaV lying within the plane of generation ofthe bore surface, and the surfaces of said de- Y 6. A candle mold, having'v a conical bore,
said bore havingV depressions therein, the surfaces of' said depressions substantially parallel With the long axis of the bore ,and disposed in relatively stepped relation, the shallow portions of the depressions lying upon the plane of generation of the bore surface, and the deeperportions, outsidej of said plane of generation, whereby thefinolded article maybe uncbstructedly removed from the bore. y
7. A candle mold, comprising a cylinder having a conical bore, the surface thereof irregularly indented to form cavities, `vvith the surfaces of cavities, tapering in the line of and non-obstructing to the mold draft.
In Witness whereof, [hereunto subscribe my name, as attested by the two subscribing Witnesses. e Y K j JAMES W. FARRELL.
