IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES EOR SPLITTING AND DRESSING HOOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,155, dated June 16, 1874; application led March 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, DAVID MURRAY and JOHN LAMONT, of Annawan, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented a new Improvement in Machine for Splitting and Dressing Hoops, of which the following is a specification:

A and B represent the splitting-rolls, and O the splitting-knife. The knife is set with its edge parallel with the line on which t-he two rolls meet, and said rolls are provided with several grooves, D, of different sizes. The roll B isgearedA with a driving-shaft, which may be turned by any competent means. The roll A is held in bearings capable of moving to and from the bearings of roll B, and provided with springs G to allow it to shift to the inequalities ofthe poles to be split. H represents the grooved rolls, and I the fluted rolls, for feeding the split piece to the shaving-knife J, arranged ovel a rubber presser-roll, K. The round side of the hoop is carried in the groovcd rolls H, so as to present the split side to the knife to be shaved. L is a guide, and M and N poi ntin g-knives, arranged on a tilting-trame,
O O', behind the shaving-knife J, and in front of the drawing-rolls P and Q,tl1e latter'being for drawing the end of the hoop after it passes from the shaving-knife.
While the hoop is confined by the feed-roll in advance ofthe shavin g-knife, it presses down on the guide so as to throw the shaving-knives out of action, but when it escapes, so as not to press down on the guide, the frame is drawn down at the other end so as to cause thel shavin g-knives to taper the end sufficiently to form the lap. Springs are employed, in connection with the feed-rolls, to cause them to gripe the hoop sufficiently to force it along. The shaw ing-knife is provided with adiusting-screws R to regulate the knife for shaving oit' the requisite amount.
By this machine the hoops can be shaved much faster and with greater uniformity than by hand. v

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of guide L, pointingknives M N, tilting-frame O O', drawing-rolls P and Q, with the shaving-knife J and rolls H K, substantially as described.
