For the nails I propose to use the kind made in the form ofa long comb, and now used with hand nailing-machines, the nails being connected together by the heads, so as to feed into the machine like abar, and be detached, one by one, as they are driven. The invention consists of a naildriver and a bender, arranged together in a stock, and geared by rock -levers with cams for operating them also, automatic feed in eehanism, for feeding t-he nails to the driver; and, also, automatic feed mechanism, for feeding the boot or shoe, all so combined and arranged that the nail-bar and the boot or shoe feed along simultaneously, and immediately after each feed-1nove1nent the bender moves down a little in advance of the driver to adjust the nail to the driving channel, and then the driver moves down and drives the nail into the shoe.

A represents the nailing-stock, containing the nail-driver B, the bender C, and the cutter D, for cutting the nails a off from the combbar F, and driving them down through the channel G into the sole of the boot or shoe, which is to be fed along under the nozzleshaped termination H of the lower end of the stock A. The naildriver B is connected to a rod, I, fitted in the stock A, to work up and down, and connected to the rock-lever J, which position.

Springs maybe used instead of flanges for raising the driver and the bender. rIhe bender is to turn the nail down into the line of the driving-channel G after it has passed beyond the cutter into said channel, the way 0n which the nail-bar is fed into the stock being a little inclined, and the end of the cutter being also inclined, so that when the nail arrives under the driver it points obliquely to one side of the channel, which is necessary for the nailbar to run properly on the ways. The bender-rod N has a wide rib', P', which works in a vertical slot, Q', in the upper part of the stock A, which, together with the rod N working in the slot O of the driver stock, keeps the stock from turning out of its true It is the channeled way inA which the nail-bar is placed to be fed into the nailingstock, said way being arranged horizontally behind the stock A, and entering it at the side, as seen in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. rlhe channel is lnade in two parts, a and b, at right angles to each other,a being for the shanks of the nails, and b for the flange of the nailbar, forming the heads of the nails when the nails are cnt off. The channel is a little inclined from the vertical plane, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6, in order that the nail-bars will lie in it alike, although they may vary somewhat in size.
The nails are fed along, one at a time, into the stock A by the pawl S, which I propose to mount on a slide, T, in ways U, on the side of the feedway It, near the nailing-stock A; and I connect the slide to a rock-lever, V, by a rod, IV, having an adjustingjoint, X, and the rock-lever is connected with the cam-disk K, so that the cam Q throws the pawl forward to feed the nails. The spring Y pulls the pawl back against an adjusting-screw, Z, by which the movement of the pawl is regulated to correspond with the distance from nail to nail, while the adjusting-joint X. regulates the position of the pawl with reference to the nail-drivin g channel. The spring m prevents the nails from moving back with the feed-pavvl.
The boot or shoe is fed by the pawl @which is Worked by the cam e, roek-leverf, and connecting-rod g. l1 is a holding pawl or presser. The boot or shoe, with the last in it, Will be presented under the nozzle H of the stock on any suitable holder, and guided by the operator, so that the -pawl d will Work in the chaunel formed in the sole for the nails.
The mechanism here represented for feeding the boot or shoe is the same as is used in a machine for sewing shoes, and I do not claim it, especially', and the way for feeding the nail-bar is also similar to that used in hand naili11g-machines.
The nail-driver B is subjected to considera.- ble Wear, and requires to be ground off square on the end, from time to time, so that it shortens gradually, and it is subject to too n'iuell strain to be held by a set Tserew acting against its side. Therefore, I have arranged an eccentric cam, fi, in a socket iu the rod, for sustaining the force of the shocks on the driver, and for adjusting to follow the driver, as it has to be let down from time to time.
Having thus described my invention, l
claim as 'new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The` combination, in a boot and shoe nailing machine, of the nail-bender and naildriver, having rock-levers J and l) and cams L and Q, arranged to operate them independently of, but rela-tively to, each other, in the order described.
2. The combination, With the slotted feedchannel, of thev nail-feeding paWl attached to a horizontally-reciprocating slide, rod W, lever V, cam Q, and spring Y, substantially as shown and described, said pawl being thus arranged for operating independently of the nail-driver, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the stock or head A, bender, and driver, of automatic feed mechanism, for feeding the boot or shoe, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of the adjustable eccentrio with the nail-driver B and rod I, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the bender-rod N, having rib l, with the driver-rod I and stock A, provided, respectively, with grooves O and Q', substantially as and for the purpose specified. I
