J. c. SKELTON SANITARY LAUNDRY BOX Filed June 15 1925 Patented 3Q,
UNI-TE STAT 1,521,334 :QFFICE.
JAMES C. SKELTQN, Q'F SANTA. MONICA, CALIFORNIA.
SANITARY LAUNDRY BOX.
Application filed June 15,
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, James C. SKnL-ro-N, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Monica, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Laundry Boxes, of which the following is aspecification.
Although my present invention may be referred to as a ventilated laundry box, it should be understood that boxes of the con struction herein described may be used for a wide variety of purposes, all of my boxes being, however, provided with means for permitting a free circulation of air.
It is an object of this invention to provide a laundry box, or the like, which shall be of workmanlike construction and of attractive appearance, but may nevertheless be inexpensively made; and, in one preferred embodiment of my invention, I may build my ventilated box in sections, thereby adapting the same to be shipped in a knock-down condition, and to be expeditiously assembled by a dealer or purchaser.
Although it is an object of this invention to provide a box having inclined slats in its sides and adapted to be open at the top, when a box embodying my invention is to be used as a storage place for foods, or the like, it should be understood that fly-wire netting may also be employed, and that any desired alternative or additional openings may be provided, it being possible, for ex ample, to pivot an entire side section upon one of the bolts which may optionally be used to hold the sections or parts of my boxes together; and possible also to use the mentioned inclined slats as supports for removable shelves, optionally placed within my ventilated box.
Other objects of my invention will appear from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, and from the appended claims, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a laundry box, or the like, embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a similar box, this view being taken in a plane such as the plane 22 of Fig. 1, the box of Fig. 2 being, however, shown as provided with fiy-wire.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of a box such as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the view shown in this figure may be regarded as taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
1922. Serial no. 645,575.
Referring in detail to the parts of that specific embodiment of my invention which I have chosen for purposes of illustration, the side or vertical walls of my box may be regarded as consisting essentially of a pair of substantially rectangular end frames 1, 1, and a pair of substantially rectangular side frames 2, 2, all of said frames being preferably formed of broad vertical strips 3, spaced apart by horizontal strips 4, 4' and supporting inclined slats 5. Although the mentioned frames may be connected or supported in any suitable way, I find it advantageous to secure each. end frame permanently to a pair of corner posts 6, and to provide additional means for removably securing the side frames 2, 2 to the same posts, in such manner as to form an enclosure, which may be completed by the addition of a suitable bottom plate 7 and a suitable cover.
While various alternative constructions might obviously be employed, I prefer to form my bottom plate from slats 8 secured to cleats 9, the latter being preferably of suflioient length to overlie the horizontal strips 4, comprised in the respective end frames, my preferred construction being such that, although the bottom 7 may interlock with the mentioned associated parts, free circulation of air shall be permitted by the openings between the slats 8, and such also that the bottom may be freely removable from the inside, although not free to move downward below the position indicated in Fig. 2.
Any one of a variety of constructions might be employed in the providing of a suitable closure for my ventilated box, but I prefer to employ a removable cover 10, provided with a central opening 11, protected by a plate 12, and provided with a handle 13; and, in order to facilitate a positioning of the said cover, the corners thereof may optionally be provided with notches 14, adapted to interfit with the respective posts 6.
Whether or not the top element of my ventilated box is used as a removable cover, I may optionally employ bolts, such as the short bolts 15 extending through the strips 3 and the posts 6, or such as the longer bolts 16, 16' extending entirely across one side of my ventilated box, to secure the parts thereof in their indicated relative positions; and, when the longer bolts 16 are ing thereover and a ventilated bottom plate adapted to be reinovably mounted at the bottoms oi. the vertical Walls with the corner posts extending below the bottom plate.
10. In a ventilated box, vertical Walls con'iprising substantially rectangular sections secured to corner posts, additional sub stantially rectangular sections removably Secured to said corner posts, said vertical Walls being surmounted by a cover extending thereover and interfitting with said posts and a ventilated bottom plate adapted to be removably mounted at the bottoms of the vertical Walls With the corner posts extending below the bottom plates.
11. In a ventilated box, vertical Walls comprising substantially rectangular sections secured to corner posts, additional substantially rectangular sections removably secured to said corner posts said vertical walls being surmounted by a cover extending thereover and provided With a ventilating aperture and a ventilated bottom plate adapted to be removably mounted at the bottoms of the vertical Walls with. the corner posts extending below the bottom plate.
12. In a ventilated box, vertical Walls comprising substantially rectangular sections secured to corner posts, additional substantially rectangular sections removably secured. to said corner posts, said vertical Walls being surmounted by a cover extending thereover and provided With a ventilating aperture protected by a plate and a ventilated bottom plate adapted to be removably mounted at the bottoms of the vertical Walls with the corner posts extending below the bottom plate.
13. In a ventilated box, vertical Walls comprising substantially rectangular sections secured to corner posts, additional sub stantially rectangular sections removably se cured to said corner posts by means comprising bolts, one of which may serve as a pivot and a ventilated bottom plate adapted to be removably mounted at the bottoms of the vertical Walls With the corner posts eX- tending below the bottom plate.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JAMES C. SKELTON.
