R. LEMIEUX TENSION DEVICE Filed May 27, 1924 2 Sheets-Sheec 2 Patented eo 3G, 392%.
TENSION DEVICE.
Application fi1ed May 1924.
T() (M w/wm z't may conccm:
Be 1t known that RnPHAEL LEMIEUX, citizen the United tates, residing at New. Bedford, in the connty o Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have 1nvented certain new and useful mprovements 1n Tenson Deviees,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to. certain new and nselul improvements in thread tensioning devises and more particularly relates t0 devices for tensioning thread in spooling machines.
The prixnary object of the present invention is to provide novel and improved means for cnabling the tension on the thread to be ir'egulated as desired.
A i'urtirer objeot of the invention is to pro ide tezisioning means for the thread Wliich iso simplifier]. construction, pos tive in operation and devoid of parts subject to derafigcinnt.
'lhe intention l1as still further and other object which Will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings Fgure 1, is a side elevation of the invention;
Figure 2, is a section on line 2-2 015 Figure 1;
Figure 3, is section on line 3-3 01 Figure 1, and
Figure 4, is a section on line 44 of Figure 2.
In 1roceeding in accordance with the present invention a -trame 1 of any suitable form is employed and which has a spindle 2 on which a bobbin 3 is mounted. The thread from the bobbin passes vertically through guides 1 and 4:, thence through the tensioning device, over a guide pulley 5 through a stationary guide 6 and then is wound on a spool, notshown.
The tensioning devioe forning the subject of the present invention includes a pair of vertically and oppositely disposed cor rugated jaws or members 7 and, 8 each pivotally mounted on a vertical pin 9, the lat Serial No. 716,241.
relativel divergent wings 11 and 12, Which latter are engaged by the curved nose 13 of a substantially Z-shaped actuttirig member 14. The member 14 is pivoted between its ends at 15 t0 a part of the frame 1 and has its rear end 16 curved and engaged by the free end of the horizontal arm 17 of a substantally L-shaped lever, the vertical arm of the lever being pivoted at 18t0 the frame. The ar3n 17 oztthe lever is provided with a series of spaced perforations 19 in a selected one of which is received the hook-shaped end 20 of the shank 21 carried by a weight 22.
The jaw or member 8 is formed with thread guides 23 and 24 located at its ends so as to releasably receive and hold the thread against the undulat ng face of the j aw at the central portion of the latter.
In operation, the Weight 22 is set in a selected one et the perforations 19 of the arm 17 of the lever according to the degree of tension to be exerted by the jaws on the thread T, the latter having an undulating passage betvveen or through the complementary corrugations of the jaws. The lever acts on the aotuating member 14, causing the i1ose 13 01 the latter to move vertically and wipingly engage and efiect approaching or permit reced ng movement of the jaws according to the setting 01: the Weight.
From the above it Will be apparent that the adjustment of the degree of tension of the jaws or the thread can be easily and quickly efi'ected by n1ere shifting of the Weight, the operation of the entire mechanism being in full view of the operator so that the latter can readily ascerta n whether proper unctioning of the parts is being had.
What is claimed is:
1. In a thread tension device, a trame, a pair of vertical opposed corrugated jaws, a vertical pin eonnected at its ends to the frame and pivotally connected to the jaws at points between the front and rear sides thereof, the front sides of the jaws being relatively diverged, relatively divergent Wings on the rear sides of the jaws, one of the javvs having upper and lower thread guides, a substantially Z-shaped actuating member pivoted to the frame and having a curved nose at one end thereof wipingly engaged with the wings, a substantially inverted L-shaped lever pivoted at the lower end of its vertical leg to the frame and having the free end portion of its horizontal guides, a substantially Z-shaped actuating member pivotedto.theframe and having one end: thereof formed to engage the w1ngs, a lever p1voted to -the frame andengagmg the gother end of the actuating member, and a vveight adjustable on the lever.
3. In a thread tension device, a fra1ne, a pair of vertical opposed oorrugated aws. a
vertical pin connected at its ends to the frame and pivotally conneotedto (lie jaivs at A po1nts between the front and rear s1cles thereof,the front sides of the jaws being relatively diverged, relatively.divergent wings on the rear sides ofthe jaws, one of the jaws having upper and lower thread guides, an
1 actna ting member pivoted to the frame and engaging tl 1e wings to cause saine to'ap proach and to permit saine to relatively re- Cede, a lever engaging the aotnating member, and a weight adjnstable on. thelver t0 tension the aotnating me1nloor throngh the lever.
4:. In a thread tensioning devioe, a pair of p1v0ted javvs hav1ng conir0htmg thread engaging faces and having relatively divergent w1ngs w1th iree edges, a p1voted aotuat1ng member'fdr jthe jaws having an end thereof shaped to form a substantially straight continuons nose WhlCh' is commoh to and which wipingly; r1gages each -of the said free edges of the jaws, and means to tension said device. 7 r r 5. In a thread tensioning. devise, a 'pair of pivoted awshaving obnfrOnting thread engaging faces and havingielativaly divergent: w1ngs, w1th Iree edge port1ons,'apWoted actriating'rnember for the jawsincluding a metal strip of a width in.exoess ofthe 7 distance betWeen said free edge portions of tlie wings having an end thereof ourved clownWardly to form a nose vvhioh wi 'iingly engages each of the said free edge portions of the jaws, and means to tension said'device.
6. In a thred tensioning device, a pair of jaws havinlg confrontingdth1ead engaging faces, and an actuating devine engaging the" jaws to cause sanie to approaoh andt0 pern1it'samo to 1ecede, a pivoted leveruindpendent of said devise andhaving a rela tively long horizontal ar1n Which latterehgages said devine. and a Weightadjstable .along the lengtli of tl1e arni to regnlabl tension tlne lever and thereby said device.
