Description

l. W. JACKSON.
Horse-Powers.
Patented J'uina 16-,"1'8 7'4.
INVENTOR 5 L0 yoke/WW0 XWITNESS ES.
%@2: A Attorney's.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE V. JACKSON, OF AMERIOUS, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. [52, 116, dated June 16, 1874; application filed May 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEssE WV. JACKSON, of Americus, in the county of Sumter and in the State of Georgia have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Power; and do hereby declare that the following is a full,
, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invent-ion consists in the construction and arrangement of ahorsepower, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,I willnow proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my horsepower, and Fig. 2 is a detached view of a part thereof.
A A represent the sills of my machine, con nected by means of a bed-piece, B, on top, from the center of which rises a vertical shaft, (1, the upper end of this shaft being securely fastened to a beam, B, into which are let other sills A A, so that the horse-power can be turned either side up, as desired. On the bedpiece B, in suitable boxes or bearings, is placed a shaft, b, at one end of the bed-piece. On
the outer end of this shaft is a band-wheel, c, and near the inner end of the shaft is a pinion, (1, running in a recess on the bed-piece B. This pinion (1 gears with a large cogwheel, O,
placed loosely on the shaft 1), and provided on the upper end of its hub with a pinion, c. This pinion 6 gears with a cog-Wheel, D, attached on the lower end of a short vertical shaft, f, which is placed, and revolves, in two bars, E E, clamped on the central shaft a. On the upper end of the short shaft fis secured a cog-wheel, D, which gears with, and receives its motion from, interior cogs on a wheel, G, placed loosely on the shaft immediately below the beam B and sills A. To this wheel G the sweeps H H are firmly secured.
This horse-power is simple in construction, easily operated, not liable to get out of order, and can be reversed so as to bring the bandwheel 0 either at the top or bottom, thus accommodating the horse-power both to cottongins and threshing-machines.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the sills A and A, beams B and B, shaft to, cog-wheels E G turning on the shaft, the cog-wheels D D on the ends of the shaft f in the clamp-bars E E, the sweeps H H, and shaft I), with bandivheel c, and pinion d, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day of April, 1874. Y
JESSE V. JACKSON. [L. s]
