Be it lrnown that l, lili-miriam W'ALLEN- THIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, county of Bristol, State oi' Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Cigarette Holders, of which the 'following is a ull, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others slrilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, forming part oi this application.

My invention relates to holders for cigarettes or cigars and consists in improvements upon the device shown in a joint application tiled by Edward Elisergian and myself, Serial No. 496,068.

The object of my invention is to provide a better gripping element than disclosed in the above-mentioned application and also to improve the stabilizing means for supporting the holder when it is laid upon a table top or similar surface.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a selected embodiment of my invention,-

Figure 1 is a side view of my holder.

Figure 2 is a similar view taken at right angles'to Figure 1 and showing the holder resting upon a supporting surface and holding a cigarette.

Figure 3 is a vertical section on line Sw?) of Figure 1, with the cigarette omitted.

Figure 4 is a transverse section on an enlarged scale taken on line 4 4 of Figure 1.

The body of my holder consists of a tubular section 1 partially closed at each end but provided with sullicient openings in its ends to permit the telescopic mounting in the tube oi the operating member 2 and the gripping elements 3 in the lower and upper ends, respectively. rl`he gripping elements are preferably made from a flat strip doubled at 4 on its transverse center and extending diagonally outwardly through slots 5 in tube 1 and having each of its ends bent outwardly at 6, then inwardly as at 7, anddownwardly as at 7a, to form a gripping jaw and to extend rearwardly into the upper end of tube 1. This end oi' the tube is crimped over as indicated at 8 with the crimped portions slightly enlarged at their ends to provide guiding openings 9 for the inturned ends 7a of the aw forming strip.

The operating member 2 consists of a short length of tubing provided with spring seats 10 and 11 and slotted at 12 intermediate these seats. A coil spring 13 is slightly compressed between these seats and a pin 14 extends between two of the coils of spring 13 and is anchored in the wall of tube 1. Upward movement of member 2 is resisted by` the compression of spring 13 which tends to return the member and the gripping elements 3 which are attached thereto to their normal position. Downward movement oi member 2 is similarly resisted by spring 13 and also by the spring action of elements 3 against the wall of tube 1.

The lower end of member 2 is provided with a Hat terminal portion 15 which is disposed at right angles to the space between jaws 7 or parallel to the axis of a cigarette held in the jaws. As a result of this construction, when the holder is laid upon a supporting surface as indicated in Figure 2, one of the projections 6 on an element 3 will supportone end of the holder and space the cigarette held therein substantially above the table, and the fiat end 15 ot' member 2 will stabilize the holder in this position, these elements serving to prevent contact between the cigarette and the supporting surface.

The provision of slots 5 in handle 1 and the form oi elements 3, as indicated, provides an easier spring-action for the gripping jaws and prevents an undesirable pinching of the cigarette which is likely to result from the construction shown in the above-mentioned application. The provision oi' extension 6 on members 3 eliminates the necessity oi' providing a spacing element on the upper end of tube 1 and 'the addition of the flat terminus 15 on the lower end of the holder enables the comparatively narrow l'lat surface of projection 6 to support the holder without the tendency to tip over irrespectively of whether or not the cigarette is balanced in the holder'.

My device is susceptible of many modilications in construction and l contemplate all such as tall within the scope of the ollowing` claims.

I claim:

1. ln a cigarette holder, a hollow body, adjustable cigarette gripping jaws slidably mounted in one end thereof, a jaw operating' member slidable in the otherl end of said body for controlling the grip or said said member and either one of said jaws being adapted to cooperate to stably support a cigarette in a plane spaced from a table top or like surface upon which the holder is laid.

2. ln a cigarette holder, a tubular body, adjustable cigarette gripping jaws telescopically mounted in one end thereof, a jaw operatingv member telesoopically mounted in the other end of said tube and provided with a flat terminal extendingparallel with the faces of said jaws, said member and one of said jaws beine' adapted to cooperate to hold a cigarette spaced from a supportingsurtace and parallel therewith.

3. ln a cigarette holder, a tubular body, open at one end and provided with a longitudinal slot adjacent to sa'd end, a cigarette grippingjaw telescopically mounted in said body and comprising' a lat element doubled on itself, the portions o'i the element extending through said open body end and said slot respectively.

4. ln a cigarette holder, a tubular body open at one end and provided with diametri- Cally opposite longitudinal siots djacent to said end, Cigarette gripping; jaws telescopically mounted in said body and comprising;` iiat elements, each donbled-on itself', the portions of eaeh element extendii'igr respectively through said open body end and through one of said slots.

5. ln a cigarette holder, a tubular body provided with diametrically opposite longitudinal slots adjacent to one end, cigarette gripping jaws telescopically mounted in said body and comprising a flat strip doubled on 1,520 oie itself and extending through said slots near its bent portion with its ends redoubled and extending intothe open end of said body.

6. ln a cigarette holder, a tubular body, open at one end and provided with a longitudinal slot adjacent to said end, a cigarette gripping jaw telescopically mounted in said body and comprising a liat element doubled on itself, the portions of the element extending through said open body end and said slot respectively, the end of said tube beingl provided with a guiding opening 'for positioning the portion of said element extending; therethrough axially of the body.

7. ln a cigarette holder, a tubular body, a i'lat strip extending diagonally and longitudinally through the side of said body, slidable therein and having' its outer end bent to form an outwardly fac-ing supportingl projection and an inwardly facing Cigarette holding` jaw.

8. ln a cigarette holder, a tubular body, a strip extending diagonally and longitudinally through the side oi said body near one end. slidable longitudinally oit' said body and having its extended portion bent to form an outwardly fac-ing supporting projection and an inwardly facing cigarette holding jaw, and an operating member 'for controlling said strip, and slidably mounted inthe opposite end of said body and having` a flattened end disposed in a plane parallel with the outer face of said supporting" projection to cooperate with the latter to maintain a predetermined axial position oit' the holder when laid upon a table or the like.
