Description

J. CANELLES SUPPLEMENTAL L'OCK AND KEY DEVICE Filed April 27, 1923 Patented Der. 30, i924.
UNITED STATES l 1,520,805 PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CANELLES, 0F DULUTH, MINNESOTA.
SUPPLEMENTAL LOCK AND KEY DEVICE.
Application filed April 27', 1923. Serial N'o. 635,056.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CANELLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, -have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supplemental Lock and Key Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lock mechanisms.
The primary obj ect of this invention is the provision of a supplementary lock and key mechanism, which may be used in connec tion with ordinary types of warded or lever-tumbler locks to make the same more secure, so. that the same may not readily be picked.
A further. object of this invention is the provision of a novel type .of lock mechanism which may be used for operating ordinary types of locks, such as warded or levertumbler. locks, embodying a Vkey portion adapted to operate the bolt mechanism of the ordinary lock, and including a pintumbler type of lockconnected to the key for operation thereof..
A furtherobject of this invention is the provisionv of a lock device which may be installed supplementary to an already positioned locking mechanism, embodying means fork attaching .the same in operable manner to the key of the already positioned locking mechanism, and itself adapted for operation bya second key.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.
. In the accompanying drawing,` forming a part of this specification, and wherein similar'reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a cross sectional view. taken through ya support, showing in section the improved `supplementary lock and key as used in connection with a conventional type of lock, the parts being shown in position for the turning of the key in the conventional lock vto operate the bolt of the same. Figure 2 is a cross sectional view, showing elements similar to those illustrated in Figure 1, however, showing thesuppleniientary lock tumblers in position to prevent operation thereof.
Figure 3 is a front elevation ofthe improved supplementary lockand-kev device,;.
showing the same eXteriorly attached to a support. Figure 4L is a bottom plan view of the improved supplementary locking device.
Figure 5 is a cross sectional View, taken substantially on the line 5--5 of Figure 4.
Figurej is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line 6 6 of Figure 2.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown but the preferred embodiment of this invention, the letter A generally designates the impro-ved supplementary lock and key, which is adapted for mounting upon an ordinary support B, such as adoor or casing; for the control of a conventional type of lock C, which may be of the warded or lever-tumbler,type.
Gis attached. The lock may include the ordinary. casing 10 `and bolt mechanism 1 1 therein of any of the approvedtypes,adapt-y ed to be operatedby means of the wing bit 15 of the key portion D.
Referring to the key D, which is adapted for operation of the lock C, the same preferably includes the vsolid cylindrical 'shank portion 17, upon the forward end ofY which the wing bit 15 is formed, as in conventional manner. This key for cooperationwith the supplementary lock device may be the ordinary key provided for the lock C, with the shank 17' thereof altered to provide an annular flange 19 adjacent the wing bitfl, andv an annular flange 2O in spaced relationwith the flange 19 at the rear end of the shank 17. Outwardly of the annular flanoe 20, a substantially rectangular reduced shank portion providing a cylindrical shaped chamber 2T" way 55 therethrough, as to expose the key therethrough, within which a revoluble plug 28 is positioned. To reduce the size or exterior dimension of the case 25, a radially extending flange or portion 30 is provided longitudinally thereof, which provides tumbler chambers or recesses 81, communicating with the passageway 27, and adapted for alignment in certain relative positions with the tumbler passageways provided transversely Vthrough the revoluble plug 28, as is usual in locks of this construction. The tumbler and complementary driver pins 38 are provided, for the transverse passageways of the'case and plug portions and 28 respectively, normally urged by the spiral springs 35'into the longitudinal key way 36 provided through lthe revoluble plug 28, as in a conventional lock construction of the pin-tumbler type.
To rotatably secure the plug 28 within the case chamber 27, an annular groove 37 is preferably provided at the forward end of the plug 28, into which a pin 38 secured to the casing 25 extends, to prevent longitudinal detachment of the plug from the case of the lock mechanism E. Y
Referring to the key D upon the locking mechanism E, the case 25 of the latter is preferably provided with a forwardly extending finger 40, contiguous with the depending flange or portion 3() of said lock case, which extends forwardly of the forward surface of the plug 28. A clamping band 45 is preferably provided, including the bight portion 46, which rotatably receives a portion of the key shank 17 therein, intermediate the spaced annular flanges 19 and 2O of the latter. ln this position, the reduced end 21 of the key D is inserted into the forward end of the key way 8G of the lock plug 28, so that there can be no relative rotation of said plug and key D. A spacing sleeve 48 is preferably provided, intermediate the forward end of the clamping band 45, and the forward annular flange 19, which is just sufficient to abut the facing annular margins of the flange 19 and the clamping band bight portion 46. The clamp band 45 preferably provides the depending parallel flanges 5() and 51, which overlie upon opposite sides the forward linger portion 40 of the case 25, and are secured thereto as by means of a rivet 53. ln this manner, it is obvious that the key part D is secured to the movable or rotatable tumbler 28 of the lock E, to prevent any relative movement of said parts. lt is thus obvious that when the key F for the pin-tumbler lock mechanism E is inserted in the key way 36, rotation of the plug 88 will likewise impart rotation to the key D.
To accommodate the supplemental lock and key device A, the support B, is prefer` ably provided with an enlarged passageway of the lock C from the outside of the support B. rlhe device A is then inserted into the passageway 55, with the bit 15 of the key D in place within the lock C for the operation of the bolt thereof. An attaching or retaining plate 57 is then detachably secured exteriorly upon the support B, which mounts the lock D in place within the passageway 55, substantially as isnillustrated in the drawing. This is a permanent location for the supplemental lock and key device A, and it is to be noted that the key D for the lock C is not to be withdrawn and cannot be withdrawn under any circumstances, except by complete detachment of the device A from the support B. The operation of the key D is only edected by operation of the plug 28, by means of the key F, of a type provided for the pin tumbler type of lock, such as E. i
From the foregoing description of this invention, it is apparent that the device herein described, is of a practical nature, in that the same can be conveniently applied to operate common types of lock mechanisms already in place, with but very little alteration to the structure upon which they are placed. rl`he lock in place is thus not only reinforced, but the conventional key for direct association therewith is in such permanent relation thereto that the same cannot be lremoved by picking.
Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of invention hereiny shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a key, a lock includinga case and a revoluble plug with a keyway therethrough, and means rotatably connecting the key to said case, so that an end thereof extends into the keyway of said plug for rotation therewith.
