Description

J. LIPKEY SHIRT CUFF Filed July e, 1922 Patented ec. EKG, i624.
UNTE STATES JOSEPH LIPKEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOS.
SHIRT CUFF.
Application filed July 8, 1922.
To al! ifi/0m t may concern:
Be it known that I, losnrrr Lrrnnr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago. county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt Cuffs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful in'iorovements in shirt cuffs, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be durable in use and economica-l in manufacture.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel cuff construction which can be reversed when edgeworn or soiled and can be reversed in such a manner so that the worn or soiled portion of the cuff cannot be seen.
My invention also has for one of its objects the method of making and sewing a reversible cuff to the sleeve of a shirt for the purposes enumerated above.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The .invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. l is a fragmentary view of a shirt sleeve showing a cuff, embodying the invention, secured thereto;
Fig. 9 is an enlarged view of the same shown unfolded and in position for ironing.
Fig. 3 yis a sectional detail view, of the saine taken substantially on line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and
el, a plan view of a cuff shown in an intermediate stage in the making thereof.
The preferred method of procedure consists in first providing` two sheets of material 5 and 6 of the desired size for the cuff and a third sheet of material 7 folded centrally upon itself and of a size to be inserted between the sheets 5 and 6 as indicated in Fig. el. The sheets 5, 6 and 7 are arranged as indicated in F ig. 1i with the folded sheet 7 between the sheets 5 and 6 and stitches 8 are run around three edges thereof as indicated to bind said sheets together around said edges, the edges corresponding t0 the folded. edge of the sheet Z Serial No. 573,722.
being left free. This stitching forms the sheets into a pocket arrangement open at one edge but closed at the other three edges. Then the` construction thus formed is turned inside out to bring the sheet 7 on the outside and to turn the seams caused by the stitching inwardly as indicated in Fig. 3. In the cuff member thus formed the raw edges 9 of the seams are concealed within the pocket and a smooth uniform seam 10 presented exteriorly. Between the free edges ll of the sheets 5, the lower edge l2 of the shirt sleeve is inserted and stitched in place by suitable stitching 13. The cuff thus formed is further provided with two sets of button holes 11i arranged equidistant on opposite sides of a central folding line and whereby when the cuff is folded centrally for use as indicated in F ig. l all of the button holes 14 will be brought in registration with each other for the reception of the usual cuff button.
Obviously the folded sheet 7 may be arranged on opposite sides of the sheets 5 and 6. The sheet 7 is shown in Fig. 3 as arranged on the outside with reference to the sleeve l2, so that when the cuff is folded outwardly as indicated in Fig. l the sheet 6 will be exposed both on the inner and, outer sides of the cuff. lVhen the sheet 7 is arranged on the other side of the sheets 5 and 6, that is on the inside of the sleeve, the sheet 7 will be exposed both inside and outside of the cuff when the same is folded for use as in Fig. l. Thus in one instance the sheet 6 is exposed and in the other instance the sheet 7 is exposed, so that in case of soiling or wearing at the fold a fresh and unbroken cu surface may be readily exposed. By means of the arrangement illustrated a strong and durable construction is provided and substantially the same appearance presented no matter which way the section 7 is arranged. It might also be added that for persons with longer arms the cuff may be worn extended as indicated in Fig. 2 and smooth and nicely finished seams exposed.
lVhile l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but
desire to avail myself of sueh variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claiml as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The method of making a reversible ouif consisting in folding a member centrally upon itself, arranging said member between two other cuff members and stitching around three sides thereof, leaving the side thereof corresponding with the folded edge of said folded member unsttohed; then turning the Construction inside out, Jto-bring the folded. member outside of the pocket thus formed; and then inserting and stitching the lower edge of a shirt sleeve between the free edges of the unfolded members, substantially as described.
2. vThe method of making a reversible cuff consisting in folding a member eentrally upon itself, arranging said member between two other cuff members and stitching around three sides thereof, leaving the side thereof corresponding with the folded edge of said folded member unstitched; then turning the construction inside out, to bring the folded member outside of the pocket thus formed; then inserting and stitching the lower edge of a shirt sleeve between the free edges of the unfolded members; and providing two sets of button holes in the cuff member thus formed arrangedV equidistant on oppositeV sides of a central folding line, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH' LIPKEY.
Vitnesses FREDA C. ArPLE'roN, JOSHUA R. H. Po'rrs.
