Description

D 23, 1924. 1,520,534 c. L. CRUVER CAP FOR KNOBS Filed June 26, 1924 ITUYQTJS; F2055 Z. ZhH/H' Patented Dec. 23, 1924.
UNITED STATES CURTIS L. CRUVER, OF OAK PARK, ILLINOIS.
CA]? FOR KNOBS.
Application filed June 26, 1924. Serial No. 722,628.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CURTIS L. CnUvnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oak Park, Cook County, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and for Caps for Knobs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in caps for the knobs of such devices as the choker rods of automotive vehicles and similar devices which are adapted to be reciprocated. and which, by reason of contact with hand or fingers, become rusty or corroded, the object of the invention being to provide a. neat, ornamental, protective cap for such knobs which may bear advertising or identifying matter and which is very easily and quickly applied to the knob and presents a non-corrosive surface for contact with hands and fingers.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein;
Fig. l. is a view in side elevation of the knob-end of the choker rod of an ordinary automotive vehicle, the cowlthrough which the same extends being shown in section, the knob of said rod being equipped with a cap constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the end of the cap which opposes the end of the knob and is equipped with means for securing the sam to said knob.
Fig. 3 is a diametric section of the cap on the line 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. a is perspective view of the cap.
The said cap comprises the preferably circular dished metal disk A, provided with an annular slightly inturned edge flange B, which is covered with a disk C of celluloid having its peripheral edge portion folded over the flange B. The latter is primarily cylindrical and is turned in to the position shown in Fig. 3 after the filler elementor disk D is inserted.
Said disk D comprises a central portion which is dished on a considerably smaller radius than the disk A and is provided with an annular edge flange E which extends in the direction of the concavity of said middle portion, said flange being slightly flared so that its greatest diameter is substantially equal to that of the opening bordered by the extreme edge-portion of the celluloid disk, the flanges B and E thus extending in opposite directions. The edge of the flange E rests upon the concave face of the disk A and the crown of the convex face of the middle or central portion of the disk D bears upon the center of the concave face of the disk A, the latter being thus reinforced against buckling or distortion under the influence of applied pressure.
The cross-sectional shape of the disk I) is such that in radial section from the center to the extreme edge of the flange E, it presents an ogee curved formation, which includes the annular convex shoulder F lying between the concave central portion of the said disk and merging into the flange E thereof.
Struck out of said central portion of the disk D are three ears or projections G and H, respectively, which have their bases at substantially the line of juncture of the concave central portion and said shoulder F and extend substantially parallel with the common axes of the disks A and B, the free end portion of the ear or projection H being bent to extend substantially perpendicularly to the base portion thereof and toward the center of the structure.
The concavity of the central portion of the disk D is preferably of smaller radius than the convex end face of the knob I of the rod J or other device so that said disk will seat upon the edge portion of said convex face of said knob and thereby prevent all tendency to wobble upon applying digital pressure to the celluloid covering of the disk A eccentrically of the latter.
The structure is applied to the knob I by first inserting the peripheral edge portion of the latter underneath the inwardly extending free end portion of the ear or projection H, then bringing the disk D to bear firmly upon the convex face of the knob I and, while maintaining the structure in this position, bending in the free. end portions of the ears or projections G similarly to the ear or projection H. This is comparatively easily accomplished either digitally or with the aid of the shank of a screw-driver or the like.
The device is very neat and may bear advertising matter such, for example, as the name and address of the dealer from whom the automobile or other device was purchased.
The device being of greater diameter than the knob I, presents a celluloid covered metal disk presenting a concave face to oppose the knob and equipped with a plurality of integral projectons struck out of the central portion thereof and spaced from its periphery, the radial distance of said projections from the center of the disk being substantially equal to the radius of the knob, said projections adapted to be bent over inwardly upon. the peripheral edge of the knob to secure the latter to said disk, a flared annular edge flange on said disk extending in the opposite direction from said projections, and a dished metal disk provided with an inturned annular flange disposed about and engaging said flared flange of the first-named disk for coupling said disks.
2. A cap element for knobs comprising a pair of metal disks equipped with respectively oppositely disposed annular edge flanges, the flange of one of said disks slightly flared and abutting along its extreme edge against the face of the other disk immediately inwardly of its flange, the
latter convergent for engaging the flared flange of said other disk to couple said disks, both disks dished on respectively different radii to thereby cause the centers of said disks to contact with each other, the disk having said flared flange equipped with a plurality of integral projections equally spaced from the center thereof and all struck out of the central portion of the same and spaced from the edge-flange thereof, said projections adapted to be bent over inwardly upon the interposed rim of a knob for securing said cap to the latter.
3. A cap element for knobs comprising a pair of metal disks equipped with respec tively oppositely disposed annular edge flanges, the flange of one of said disks slightly flared and abutting along its extreme edge against the face of the other disk immediately inwardly of its flange, the latter convergent for engaging the flared flange of said other disk to couple said disks, a celluloid covering for the outer disk extending over the flange thereof and having its extreme peripheral edge portion engaged between the flanges of said disks, both disks dished on respectively different radii to thereby cause the centers of said disks to contact with each other, the disk having said flared flange equipped with a plurality of integral projections equally spaced from the center thereof and all struck out of the central portion of the same and spaced from the edge-flange thereof, said projections adapted to be bent over inwardly upon the interposed rim of a knob for securing said cap to the latter.
