UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT S. IRElVIONG-ER, 0F NEI/V YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO BENJAMIN ELECTRIC MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
'II-IIEFPROOF-LAMP CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed January 3, 1922.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ROBERT S. IREMONGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Thiefproof- Lamp Constructions, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to thlef-proof lamp construction.
One of the objects of my inventlon is to provide an improved construction which will make it difficult for anyone to steal the globe which encloses an electric lamp.
Further objects will appear from the detailed description to follow and from the ap pended claim.
In the drawings in which an embodiment of my invention is shown Figure 1 is a plan view of a caslng and a lamp enclosing globe supported thereby;
Fig. 2 is a section on the l1ne 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the pawl and key;
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the globe;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the top of the globe; and
Fig. 6 is a section on the hne 66 of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings 1n detail, the construction shown therein comprises a lamp socket 10, mounted on a suitable support 11, a metal c'asing 12, mounted in front of the support 11, a lamp 13 screwed into the socket 10, a globe 14L screwed into the easing 12, and enclosing lamp 13, and a thiefproof construction 15 for preventing an unauthorized person from unscrewing the globe and stealing it and the lamp.
The thief-proof constructlon comprises a spring-pressed pawl 16, the point of which bears against the threads 17 (Figs. 4: and 5) on the globe 14:, these threads being cut away in several places as indicated at 18 to provide a sort of ratchet. construction for Serial No. 526,768.
cooperation with the pawl 16, which will permit the globe 14 to be screwed into the casing, but will prevent it from being unscrewed by the engagement of the pawl in these notches 18.
The suitable frame 19, which may be a sheetmetal stamping, the stamping for this purpose being provided with alined bearing openings 20, to receive the pintles 21 of the pawl. The pawl itself may also be a sheetmetal stamping. The lower pintle 21 has a sort of wrench engagement with a screwthreaded key-engaging socket 22, as shown 1n Figs. 3 and 6, this key-engaging socket having its upper end extending into the lower opening in the frame 19, and having ts lower end mounted in a sheet-metal bearing cap 23, secured in an opening 24L in the casing 12.
For holding the point of the pawl pressed against the threads 17 on the globe, a coil torsion spring 25 is provided which surrounds the key-engaging socket 22. One end of this spring engages a lug 26 on the pawl 16, and the other end is suitably secured to some fixed part.
For operating the pawl, to release it from its engagement with the ratchet teeth 18, a key 27 is provided having a handle portion 28, and a threaded shank 29 which screws into the screw-threaded socket 22,and which when it is screwed home makes it possible to turn the pawl 16 by me'ans of the key. This thread on the key is made left-handed, so that the pawl cannot be operated by means of an ordinary right-hand thread screw.
It will be seen that I have provided a simple construction which will prevent the removal of the globe and the enclosed lamp by an unauthorized person.
WVhile I have shown but one embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that it may be embodied in other forms covered and defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
The combination with a lamp socket and pawl 16 is pivotally mounted in a E an internally threaded easing adjacent said socket, of a globe for enclosing a lamp bulb having a helical thread formed integral therewith for engaging the thre'aded casing, said helical thread having a plurality of turns, the turns of said threads having a series of alined notches therein, and a pawl pivoted about an 'axis parallel to the axis of the socket and having a broad edge for engaging said series of alined notches. 10
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
ROBERTS. IREMONGER.
