Description

Dec. 16, 1924- 1,519,847
I J. S. KNEE HUMIDIFIER Filed Oct. 4, 1923 Patented Dec. 16, 1924.
UNITED STATES JOHN STUART KNEE, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
HUMIDIFIER.
Application filed October 4, 1923. Serial No. 666,518.
To all who 1a it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN STUART KNEE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Humidifiers, of
which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to humidifiers; and its object is to provide a humidifier having improved means for circulating the water therein, and being adapted for use in connection with heat radiators of common form.
This and any other objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the structure hereinafter particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is an end View of a heat radiator, and a transverse sectional View of a humidifier carried thereby taken on line 11 of Figure 4;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of a portion of 2 the humidifier, and a sectional view of a portion of the radiator taken on line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a similar view, but showing the humidifier supported at one side of the radiator;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the humidifier taken on line 4 at of Figure 5;
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view of the same taken on line 55 of Figure 4E; and
Figure 6 is an edgewise end view of a plate in the humidifier.
In the embodiment of the invention illus trated by the drawings, my humidifier 1 is shown employed in connection with, and supported upon, a heat radiator 2 of common form, comprising a plurality of parallelly-disposed hollow members 3, having opposite portions 4, 5, spaced apart by alined voids 6. My humidifier 1 is in form a deep and narrow vessel, as shown, with an open top 7 sides 8, ends 9 and bottom 10. It may be removably inserted into the radiator in termediate the opposite portions 4:, 5 of the radiators members 3, its bottom resting on the lower connecting portions 11 of said portions, as seen in Figures 1 and 2; or the humidifier may be positioned in contact with one side of the radiator as seen in Figure 3, in which position it may be supported by the rod 12 extending toward the opposite side of the radiator and connected as by the rods nut 13 to the bar 14 engaging said opposite side. The humidifier vessel 1 is provided with a filling mouth 15, and has a removable plate 16 positioned vertically edgewise in the vessel and spaced from its opposite sides 8 by the spacing members 17 carried by the plate. This plate is, in the construction illustrated, spaced at 18 from the vessels bottom, and is spaced from its opposite ends 9, and has at its end edges adjacent the ends of the vessel, semi-circular recesses or openings 19.
It will be understood that the water in the vessel 1, being heated by the radiator, will circulate in the humidifier and that this circulation is caused particularly by the vessels being heated more at its side which is adjacent the radiator in the form seen in Figure 3, then it is heated at its opposite side; and even when the vessel is inserted in the position seen in Figures 1 and 2, the side of the vessel which is nearer an outside wall of the room where located, will not be heated as much as its opposite side. It will be seen also that by reason of this uneven heating of the opposite sides 8, 8 of the vessel, the plate 16 positioned between said sides and spaced from both divides the narrow but deep chamber of the vessel 1 and thus keeps the unevenly heated water adjacent said sides from quickly intermingling near the vessels bottom; but causes a more complete circulation of the water and a more uniform heating thereof throughout, by forcing the heated water to rise through the recesses 19 of the plate and thus pass at the plates ends from one side of the plate to the other.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbefore shown or described.
I claim:
1. In a structure of the character described: a heat radiator; an open-top deep and narrow vessel supported thereon; a plate positioned vertically edgewise in the vessel and spaced from its opposite sides and from its bottom and from at least one of its ends.
2. In a structure of the character described: a heat radiator; an open-top deep and narrow vessel supported thereon; a
plate positioned vertically edgewisein the vessel and spaced from its opposite sides and having a plurality of recesses inits endedges adjacent the ends ozfi. the vessel.
3. In a structure of the character described: a heat radiator; an open-top deep and narrow vessel supported thereon; a removable plate positioned vertically edgewise inthe vessel and spaced: from its 0ppesite ends and carrying spacing members adapted to space the plate from the opposite sides oi the vessel.
In testimony whereof I, have hereunto set my; hand at Grand Rapids, Michigan, this 26th day of September, 1923.
JOHN STUART KNEE.
