Description
E. J. BANNISTER IARKING DEVICE FOR PIES Filad Jah. 19', 192 1 Patented Rec. 16,
EDWARD J. BANNISTER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
MARKING- DEVICE FOR PIES.
Application filed January 19, 1921. Serial No. 438,275.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EDWARD J. BANNisTnn, citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaul-Iee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of l Visconsin, have invent d new and useful Improvements in Marking Devices for Pies, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and. exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to devices for niiarking pies, cakes, etc., whereby the same may be subsequently cut with accuracy.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple and rugged device enabling accurate marking of a. large number of such articles in rapid succession.
Another object is to provide a device of the character stated which may be readily adapted to mark such articles for any desired division thereof and which may be readily adjusted for accurate marking of articles of different diameters.
Another object is toprovide a device of the character stated which may be quickly and conveniently cleansed.
The accompanying drawing illustrates one embodiment of the invention which will now be described it being understood that the embodiment illustrated is susceptible of various modifications falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the device;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is an inverted plan View of the marking element and supporting frame.
Referring to the drawing the device comprises a marking element 1 carried by plunger 2 reciprocably mounted in a supporting frame 3.
T he marking element 1 comprises a central part 41 from which radiate a number of arms 5 equal to the desired number of division markings. As shown this element has seven arms each of which is provided on its under side with a series of pins 6 adapted to be driven into the article to be marked by depression of said element through the medium of plunger The pins may of course assume any preferred form and might be rcplaced by other marking means but pin such as shown are very effective and permit the element to be readily cleansed. Also it is preferred to provide said element with a center pin hereinafter described of greater dian'ieter to mark more conspicuously the center of the article to facilitate accurate cutting.
The supportin frame 3 comprises a. tubuiar part 'i to receive the plunger 2, from which pa extend two diverging arms 8 having at their ends perpendicularly disposed portions 9 for securement to a suitable base 10. Thus the marking element is supported in a spaced relation with the base whereby the article to be marked may be freely inserted beneath the marking element and centered with respect to the latter by engagement with the portions 9 of the supporting frame or preferably by engagement with stops or abutments 11 provided on the latter. As illustrated the stops comprise discs carried by stems 12 which fit into sockets provided in the portions 9 of the support whereby said stops may be adjusted radially of the plunger 2, set screws 13 (Fig. 3) being provided to secure said stops to said support. Hence the stops may be readily adjusted to insure proper positioning of articles of different diameters relative to the marking element and without requiring the exercise of care on the part of the user beyond insuring engagement of the article with both stops.
The plunger 2 has a pointed extremity 1% extending through the central part of the marking element to provide the aforesaid center pin and also has a threaded engagement with said element for releasable securement thereto. A button or knob 15 is attached to the; outer end of the. plunger for actuation thereof and said plunger has lined thereto an inverted cup-shaped member 16 telescopically fitting the tubular part 'i of the supporting frame while a coiled spring 17 is arranged within the part 7 and interposed, between a shoulder 18 of the latter and the member 16 to bias the plunger upwardly. Thus the spring serves to normally hold the marking element in elevated position subject to depress-ion by pressure on the plunger.
It will thus be apparent that marking may be eiiccted by merely inserting the article beneath the marking element and against the stops 11 and then momentarily depressing the marking element through the medium of the plunger. Upon release of the plunger the spring retracts the marking lit) element thus permitting the marked article to be freely Withdrawn.
It will also be apparent that several parts of the device may be modified in various respects, that the dimensions of the parts may be varied to adapt the device to articles of varying thickness and that the marking element may be quickly and easily detached for cleansing or for replacement by an element having a different number of radial marking arms. 7
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A marking device of the character described comprising a frame to receive the article to be marked, a marking element reciprocably mounted in said frame and stops adjustably secured to said frame to be engaged by the article to be marked for proper positioning of the latter relatively to said element, said stops being adjustable radially of said miarking element.
A marking device of the character described comprising a reciprocable marking element, a frame having a part in which said element is reciprocably mounted, arms extending radially from said part and perpendicular supports for said arms, a spring tending to retain saidelement in a given position on said frame to permit insertion thereunder of the article to be marked and adjustable stops carried by said supports to center such article With respect to said element.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
EDWARD J. BANNISTER.
