UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GURDON P. JUDSON, F FAIRFIELD, IOWA.
WELL
Application :filed April 22,
To all whom t may Concern.'
Be it known that I, GURDON P. JUDsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfield, in the county of Jefferson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tell Seals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to well seals and more particularly to a seal for irrigation wells. It has heretofore been the practice to seal irrigation wells by wrapping sacks about the well casing and suction pipe at the point of entrance of the suction pipe into the casing, but this has proven unsatisfactory inasn'iuch as it has been found that the well must be resealed several times in a season. Therefore, the present invention has as one of its objects to provide a seal which may be applied to the suction pipe of an irrigation well and, when the said pipe is lowered into proper position within the upper end of the well, will automatically seal the well and obviate the cumbersome procedure of sealing the well in the ordinary manner.
Another' object of the invention is to provide a seal so constructed that it may be caused to more or less firmly bind the suction pipe and yet in a manner to permit of sliding movement of the pipe through the seal so that the seal will be automatically adjusted with relation to the pipe when the pipe is inserted into the top of the well.
Another object of the invention is to provide a seal which will be extremely simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and not liable to require attention or repairs after it has been once installed, and which seal will be durable and air and fluid tight.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the seal embodying the present invention installed, the well casing being shown in section as also the upper portion of the well;
Figure 2 is a detail vertical diametric sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, the suction pipe being shown in elevation;
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
SEAL.
1924. Serial No. 708,219.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the well pit and the numeral 2 indicates the well casing, the upper end of the casing projecting into the pit a short distance above the bottom thereof, as is usual. The numeral Sindicates the suction pipe of the pump and thc numeral l indicates the delivery pipe which isvin communication with the said suction pipe 3 in the usual manner, the water in the well casing being elevated through the suction pipe by means of an ordinary centrifugal pump 5 operated through the medium of a shaft 6, pulley 7, and belt 8 housed within a structure 9 mounted upon the base 10 of the well.
The seal embodying the present invention is indicated in general by the numeral 11 and the same comprises a substantially eylindrical body 12 which may be made of rubber, a composition of rubber and fabric, or of any other suitable material or combination of materials either with or without reinforcements, the only requirement being that the material shall be more or less yieldable and substantially waterproof. The body is provided with an axial bore 13 which is of a diameter to slidably it the suction pipe 3 of the well pumping apparatus, and exteriorly the body is formed at its upper end with a circumscribing shoulder 14 and at its lower end with a similar shoulder indicated by the numeral 15. The under side of the seal body 12 is plane as indicated by the numeral 16 and is designed to engage and rest squarely upon the upper end of the well casing 2 as vclearly shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. The upper surface of the shoulder is preferably rounded from its juncture with the intermediate portion of the body 12, to the periphery of the shoulder as indicated by the numeral 17.
In order that the seal body 12 may be caused to more or less firmly embrace the suction pipe 3, a clamping means comprising two semi-annular collar sections 18, is provided, and each of these collar sections is formed at its ends with outstanding ears 19 having openings 2O therein for the passage of clamping bolts indicated by the numeral 21. The collar sections 18 embrace the intermediate or thinner portion of the body 12 as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, and by tightening the bolts 21, the sections may, as stated, be caused to more or less firmly bind this portion of the body 12 about the suction pipe 3. l
In -order that resistance may be`olfered to any upward distortion of the shoulder 15 when the seal body is lowered to position bearing upon the upper end of the well casing 2, the collar sections 18 are foi-ined each with a circumferential outstanding flange 22 extending about its lower edge and'transversely curved to conform to the transverse curvature ofthe upper surface 17 of the said shoulder 15. These flanges are sofoi'med `as to provide projecting end portions 23 located beyond the ends ofthe collar sections proper 18, and inthe assembled"relationship of the parts the -saidjprojectin'g end portions 23 of the A'flanges ofthe two collar sectionsoverlap as be'stillustrate'd'in Figures v2 and 3 of the drawings so that ay backing, so to speak, is provided for the entire area of the upper face ofthe said shoulder 15. v"In applying the seal to the suction pipe 3, thebolts 21 are loosened and the seal body 12 is slipped onto the `pipe and adjusted to a position where it will strike, at its 4under side, against the upper end vof thel well casing' 2 when the suction tube is fully intioduced'toproper position within the well casing. VThe boltsv 21 arev then tightened to cause the ksaid member 12 to frictionally bind the suctioirpipe 3'to a greater or less degree, and the'said'suctionpipe is then lowered into the `well casing 2. lVhen the under side of the shoulder I15 meets thel upper end of the Well casing'2, the seal havingbeen properly ad- Ajusted aspreviously explained, the base 10 willbepositioned a 'greater or less distance above'thegground surface or the well curbing. Downward'. pressure is thenexerteduntil .the base 10 seats Aiipon'the curbing or ground surface, and in' this downward movement of the structure including the suction vpipe"3,the said pipe will-be slid 'downwardly through the bore "13 ofthe seal body 12. In
this manner the well .is effectually sealed in lan airl and fluid tight mannen It :will ybe evident that'the shoulder 15 is reinforced so 'as't'o Iprevent it'becoming distorted or deflected in an upward direction,by reason of 'theenga'gement-of the Aflanges 22 against its upper side. "It will'lilewise be evident that the clamping .means comprising the collar sections 18 is prevented from displacement with relation tothe seal body V12, due to the disposition of the collar sectionsv between the shoulders 111l and 1'5.
It will be'observed'from the drawings that vthe'under side oftheseal is flat and that due Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A well seal comprising a body of yieldable material having a pipereceiving bore and provided at its lower end with a bearing surface, andvclamping means embracing the said body.

5; A well seal comprising a body'of yieldable material having a'pipevreceiving bore and provided at its lower end with a vcircumscribing shoulder the underside of which constitutes a bearing surface for engagement with the end of a well casing, a two part collar disposed to circumscribe the kbody above the -said shoulder, means for drawing together the ends of the saidcollar parts whereby to cause the parts to bind about the body and effect frictional binding of the wall of the bore about the pipe to which the seal'is fitted. y
6. A` well seal comprising a body of yieldable material having a pipe receiving bore and provided at its lower end with a circumscribin'g shoulder the undersideof which 'constitutes a bearing surface for engageto which the=seal is ntted., tliesaid collar parts being provided with outstanding flanges at their lower edges engaging Ithe upper side of the said shoulder.
7. A well seal comprising a body o yieldable material having a pipe receiving bore and provided at its lower end with a oiroumsoribing shoulder the underside of which constitutes a bearing surface for engagement with the end of a well easing, a two part collar disposed to oiroumsoribe the body above the said shoulder, means lor drawing together the ends of the said Collar parts 10 whereby to cause the parts to bind about the body and elil'eot lfriotional binding ot the wall of the bore about the pipe to which the seal is tittedy the said oollar parts being provided with outstanding flanges at their lower edges engaging the upper side ot' the said shoulder, and having their ends mutually overlapped.
In testimony whereof' I affix my signature.
