Description

1.. A. ANDERSON PRODUCE CARRIE R Filed Oct. 25, 1923 Patented Dec. 16, 1.924.
UNITE 'I'ES E FEQE.
LAURITS A. ANDERSON, OF AUDUBON, IOWA.
PRODUCE CARRIER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURITS A. ANDER- soN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Audubon, in the county of Audubon and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Produce Garriers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in luggage carriers which are adapted for use on the running boards of automobiles, the object being to provide an exceptionally simple and inexpensive construction which may be advantageously used for carrying egg cases, suitcases, and other luggage.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a com- 25 plete luggage carrier constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of one of the two sections of which the carrier is constructed.
The improved carrier consists of two sections 8 which are of identical construction, with the exception that one-is the reverse of the other. Hence, a description of one will suffice for both. I have shown a'horizontal bar 1 adapted to extend transversely across the upper side of an auto-mobile running board, which is designated in the drawing by the numeral 2. The outer end of the bar 1 is bent downwardly as indicated at 3 and then bent inwardly to provide a clamp arm 4 which is intended to extend under the running board 2, the free end of said arm 4 being preferably thickened by bending it upon itself at 5, and being provided with a suitable clamping screw 6. To prevent downward springing of the arm 4;, when the screw 6 is tightened, I prefer to extend a bolt or rivet from said arm to the body portion of the bar 1. A rigid arm 8 is secured by rivets or the like 9 to the downwardly bent bar portion 3 and rises rigidly therefrom. while another vertical arm 10 is provided by bending the free end of the bar 1 upwardly. It will be seen that the horizontal body portion of the bar 1 and the arms 8 and 10, form a U-shaped frame disposed in a vertical plane. The ends of this frame, that is the free ends of the arms 8 and 10, are secured to the free ends of a pair of arms 11 of a second U-shaped frame 12, the latter however being positioned in a horizontal plane. This entire frame 12 may well be formed from a single metal bar, as shown. An L-shaped metal bar 13, preferably has its upper end secured bv a rivet or the like 14 to the intermediate portion of the frame 12, while the lower end of said bar 13 is similarly secured at 15, to the intermediate portion of the bar 1.
When two of the sections 8 are clamped on a running board as shown in Fig. 1, they constitute a complete containing frame for any article or articles to be carried, such as egg cases. By separating the two sections longitudinally of the running board, they may effectively be used for holding suitcases or other elongated objects.
It will be seen from the foregoing that an exceptionally simple and inexpensive device has been provided, yet that it will be very desirable and may be quickly and easily attached or detached.
While excellent results may be obtained from the exact details disclosed, it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may be made.
I claim:
1. A luggage carrier comprising a horizontal bar for transverse disposition on an automobile running board, the outer end of said bar being bent downwardly and inwardly to extend under the running board and having a clamping screw, the inner end of said bar being formed with an upstanding arm, a second arm secured to and rising from the downwardly bent portion of said bar, and a horizontally disposed U- shaped frame secured at its ends to said arms.
2. A luggage carrier comprising a horizontal bar for transverse disposition on an automobile running board, the outer end of said bar being bent downwardly and in- Q; I I 1,519,433
