To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1. AUGUST F. REICHEBT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of W'isc'onsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forms for Providing Openings in Plastic Walls, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a form for providing an opening in aconcrete or plastic wall, and while the form is more particularly adapted for providing a door opening in a silo or like structure, it may also be employed to provide openings in the concrete or plastic walls of any structure which may be in the course of erection.
Among the objects of the invention are to provide a form of this character which comprises a. series of similar and intercl'iangeable units adapted to be progressively advanced as the building of the wall proceeds so as to provide an opening of any desired length, which can be readily placed in position or removed therefrom and provides a strong and rigid form when assembled in operative position, and which may provide for embedding the ends of rungs in the sides of the opening.
\Vith, these and other objects in View the invention. consists of certain novel combinations, associations and arrangements of the parts, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds.
For a full understanding of the invention reference. is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a silo wall having forms embodying the invention. positioned within the door opening thereof.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line.- 22 of Figure 1, lool-:ing in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the units of the form.
Figure 4 is a detail view of one of the pins which are used to hold superposed units in proper alignment with each other.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters. In Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing the reference character A designates fragmentary portions of a silo wall which has been molded from some suitable )lZLStlC material such as concrete, said Well eing provided with a vertically extending door opening The form for providing this door opening B is formed of a series of units, one of which is shown in detail by Figure 3, said units being formed in rights and lofts which are assembled in a superposed relation on opposite sides of the door opening. As the building of the wall progresses the lower units are adapted to be removed and assembled at the topof the upper units, the mold for the wall A being also preferably formed of units that can be advanced as the work progresses, such as those disclosed in Patent No. 1,071,177 which was granted tome on August 26, 1913.
Each of the door opening form units includes a. plate 1 which is provided at the sides thereof with angle iron reinforcements 2 and 3, and at the top and bottom thereof with angle iron reinforcements t and 5, respectively. The concrete engaging face of the plate 1 is smooth and free fro-m projections, the fianiges of the angle iron reinforcing strips being all riveted or otherwise so cured to the outer face of the plate. The outer flanges of the angle iron side strips 2 and 3 project in opposite directions from the plate 1, each being arranged at right angles to the face of the plate. This projecting flange of the angle iron 3 is riveted or otherwise secured to a reversely disposed angle iron corner piece 6 which is arranged in such a manner as to provide a longitudinal channel or rabbet 7 at the correspondingedge of the door opening B. These channels or rabbets 7 are ordinarily provided at the inner cc ges of the door opening of a silo for the purpose of receiving the planks forming the continuous silo door.
The free flanges of the upper and lower angle iron strips 4: and 5, respectlvely, project rearwardly from the plate 1 at right angles thereto and are arranged 1n such a manner that when two of the units are superposed upon each other the outwardly projecting flange of the lower angle iron strip 5 of the upper unit will rest squarely upon the outwardly projecting flange of the upper angle iron strip 4 of the lower unit. Corresponding openings 8 are formed 1n the outwardly projecting flanges of the angle iron strips 4 and 5, and a pin 9 1s adapted to be inserted through these openmgs for the purpose of holding the superposed units in proper vertical alignment with each other.
The upper angle iron strip 4 is cut away at 10 and the edge of the plate 1 is correspondingly notched at 11 to provide clearance openings for a rung 12. These rungs 12 ordinarily extend transversely across the door opening B and have the ends thereof embedded in the side walls of. the opening. The construction provides for removing the forms and leaving the rungs in. position within the door opening. The flange of the side angle iron strip 3 which is secured to the plate 1 may be cut away at the ends thereof, as indicated at 13, to provide a clearance space for the ends of the upper and lower strips 4 and 5, and an extra thickness 14 may be interposed between the side angle iron strip 2 and the plate 1, said. extra thickness extending between the upper and lower angle iron strips 4 and 5 so that the extremities of the side angle iron strip 2 overlaps the base flanges of the angle iron strips 4 and 5. At the opposite side of the unit angle iron straps 15 are arranged at the intersection of the angle iron side strip 3 and the upper and lower angle iron strips 4 and 5, respectively, securely fastening the said reinforcing strips at the corners of the form so that a rigid construction is obtained. A pair of transversely extending angle iron strips 16 are provided upon each of the units, the outwardly extending flange of each of the said strips 16 being provided with a pair of pins 17 which are adapted to enter corresponding openings in the ends of a spacer plate 18. The spacer plates 18 connect the corresponding units at opposite sides of the door opening and hold the units in a properly spaced relation. The spacer plates. are preferably. secured to the units at plurality of points, as by means of two or more of the pins 17, so as. to hold the units in proper relative position as well as the proper distance apart. It will be ob vious, however, that the plates can be readilv lifted from engagement with the pins 17 and removed from position when it is desired to release the units and take them from the door opening. These units are obviou sly formed in rights and lefts, and they are assembled in a superposed relation on opposite sides of the door opening. so as to provide a continuous upright opening of the proper size, the lower units beingremoved and replaced above the upper units so that the units are advanced as the work progresses. The rungs. 12 remain in pos1- tion in the door opening after the units have been removed, and the corner strips 6 provide the usual longitudinal channels 7 at the inner edges of the door opening to receive the planks forming the continuous door of the silo.
While I have il st ated and described one particular embodiment of my invention which is especially adapted for the formation of a continuous door opening in a silo, it will be obvious that with slight modifications and changes which are clearly within the scope of the invention the form can be adapted for use in providing an opening in the plastic or concrete wall of any structure which may be in the course of erection.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
1. A form of the character described, including a series of similar and interchangeable units which are adapted to be correspondingly positioned at opposite sides of the opening to be formed in the wall, cor-responding transverse flanges projecting from the units, spacer plates connecting the units, and means for detachably connecting the spacer plates to the flanges at a plurality of places, whereby the units are held the proper distance apart, and also in the properangular relation to each other, said fastening means including a plurality of pins carried by one of the members and adapted to detachably engage corresponding openings in the other member. v
2. A form of the character described, including a series of similar units adapted to be assembled in a superposed relation at opposite sides of the opening to be formed in the wall, marginal. stiffiening flanges at the sides and top and bottom of the units, said flanges projecting in reverse directions at opposite edges of the units, and a corner piece carried by one of the said side flanges and arranged to provide a rabbet in the edge of the opening being formed in the wall, the top and bottom flanges providing means for connecting superposed units.
3. A form of the character described, including a series of similar units adapted to be assembled in a superposed relation at opposite sides of the ooening to be formed in the wall, a margina stiffening flange e tending around the. edge of each of the units at the sides and top and bottom thereof and the flanges at opposite sides of each unit projecting in reverse directions, a corner piece carried by one of the side flanges and arranged to provide a rabbet in the edge of the opening being formed in the wall, each of the units being provided at one of its meeting edges with a rung receiving notch and the top and bottom. flanges providing means for connecting superposed units.
4. A form of the character described, including a series of similar units adapted to be assembled in a superposed relation at opposite sides of U116 opening to be formed in thewall, marginal stiffening flanges extending around the edges of the units at the sides and top and bottom thereof, transverse flanges connecting the side flanges, spacer plates connecting corresponding transverse flanges, and means for detachably connecting each of the spacer plates to the transverse flanges at a plurality of points, Whereby the units are held the proper distance apart and also in the proper angular relation to each other, the top and bottom marginal flanges providing means for connecting superposed units.
5. A form of the character described, including a series of similar units adapted to be assembled in a superposed relation at opposite sides of the opening to be formed in the Wall, marginal reinforcing flanges extending around the units and the reinforcing flanges at the sides of the units projecting in reverse directions, a corner piece carried by one of the side flanges and arranged to form a rabbet in the edge of the opening being formed in the wall, transverse flange elements connecting the side flanges, spacer plates connecting corresponding transverse flange elements, and means for detachably connecting the plates to each of the flange elements at a plurality of points, whereby the units are held the proper distance apart and also in the proper angular relation to each other.
6. A form of the character described, including a plurality of corresponding units adapted to be assembled in a superposed relation each of the units including a plate having reinforcing strips at the edges thereof, and angle iron corner straps at the illtersections of certain of the reinforcing strips.
