Application filed February 26, 1923.
To all fui/wm t may conce/m.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD FV. DANIEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asbury Park, county of Monmouth, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Devices for Securing TVall Boards and the. like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
i My invention relates generally to securing devices useful in fastening materials or elements in sheet or board forni such for esarnple, as in wall of partition building to secure wall boards to a skeleton structure or ground work designed for their mounting and support.
My invention is directed in the broadest aspect toward providing a device of the character above defined capable of being applied directly to the studding bars or rods (as the case may be) without requiring any modification or alteration in such bars or rods (such as notching, drilling or slotting) nor `the employment of any special tools other than an ordinary hammer or the like to effect attachment to the supporting structure.l
Other subsidiary objects of my invention, together with their attendant advantages will become readily apparent from the detailed. description which. follows of a typical embodiment of my invention, while its scope will be as readily manifest from the appended claims.
In the drawings Fig. I is a. fragment of a wall or partition conveniently illustrating how my improved securing devices may be employed in securing the wall boards to thc skeleton frame provided for their support.
Fig. II is a detail cross section on an enlarged scale taken as indicated by the arrows II-II in Fig. l; and
Fig. III is a perspective View of the sccuring device per se.
More especially from Fig. I it will be observed that the securing device of my invention comprises a member l in the form of a clip, and a key 6 whereby said clip can be clamped to a suitable support as hereinafter noted. The clip l may be briefly describen as consisting of a main or body portion 2 which is of channelled cross section as clearly shown in the perspective illustration, and laterally extending wings 3 flanking opposite sides of the body portion and constituting means for engaging the edges of the sheet material or wall boards which are to be secured. Said wings 3 aregrouped in pairs and the components of these groups lie in different parallel planes s that intervals are afforded to accommodate the thickness of the sheets or boards. Birectly adjacent the open end of the channel of the body portion, the side walls 4t, -Lt of the latter areprovided with notches or slots 5, which er;- teud downwardly from their upper edges at a slight inclination to the vertical. These notches are designed to receive the key (S and in conjunction with it serre as a clamping means whereby the clip member 1 may be fastened to the bars or rods of askeleton framework as hereinafter noted. The securing device of my invention lends itself readily and conveniently to economic manufacture from comparatively thin sheet metal, and may be produced for example, by stamping or cutting a blank of appropriate form which after bending will produce a structure of the configuration hercinbefore described. A clip thus made has the attributes of lightness, pliability, and by vvirtue of the thinness of the metal requires very little space for its accommodation and is therefore inconspicuo-us in use as will be obvious from later description. For the saine reasons,
the key G is also preferably constructed from sheet metal.
The manner in which the securing device is used in wall or partition building will be readily understood from Figs. I and Il. wherein the skeleton supporting framework which is to serve as a mounting for the wall boards B is shown as consisting of a series of uprights or studs 10 and l() of channel iron, which which may also include horizontal cross bars orv connectors 11, l1 of similar material if greater rigidity should be found desirable or necessary. Then in position it will be best observed from Fig. Il, that the channelled body portion 2 of the clip l embraces the stud l0 while the laterally extending wings 3 respectively lap marginal portions at opposite sides of adjacent boards B thus serving to embrace the board edges and to determine positions of relative alignment for them in the wall or partition, The clip is fixed to the studs or bars of the skeleton supporting structure through clamping action induced by forcing the key 6 into the wedge slots 5, said keys thus serving as a closure for the channel of the main or body portion of the clip and as a keeper to prevent subsequent dislodgment of the ,samen as will be manifest from Fig. H olf the drawings, The number' of clips used and the mode of their distribution in securing a board will ot course be varied in accordance u'itli its size and the nature or type of skeleton i'rameuforl to which it is to be hung. i
While I have shovn and described my ini vention as being especially useiiul in connection With the mcuntng` ot Wall boards in Wall or partition building7 do not Wish to limit myself to such speciiic use since the same may obviously be employed in many other instances Where sheet material. is to be hung.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
l. A securing` device ot the character described comprising a channel section body portion for embracing an element oli a skeleton supportngl structin'e7 the legs of said body. portion being,- formed with laterally projecting Wings lying in ditte-rent planes Yt'or engaging an edge oit sheet material to secure the saine to said supporting strueture.
2. A securing device ot the character described comprising a channel section body portion for embracing a skeleton supportingy structure, and opposed stepped Wings integral with the channel section legs for engaging the edges ot sheet material to secure the same to the supporting structure.
A securingv device of the character described comprisng a main or body portion for embracing a bar or rail oit a skeleton supporting structure, and integral laterally extendino stepped Wings for lapping edge margins at opposite sides of sheet material to secure the same to the supporting struc-` ture.
4i. A securing device4 of the character described; in the ilorm of a clip constructed. ot sheet metal compri sing a main or body portion for embracing a bar or 1ail off ei skeleton supporting structure, and integral laterally extending' Wings lying in diderentl parallel planes lfor lapping edge marginsV at opposite sides ot sheet material to, secure the same to the supportingV structure.
5. A securing device of, the character dcsame to the supportino structure, and WedgeA means Ytor clamping the main or body portion to the bar or rail aforesaid.
T. A. securing device ot the character rdescribed comprising` a channelled body portiontor en'iloracing` a bar or rail of a skeleton supportingstruc-ture9 means for engaging` the edges of sheet material to secure the same to the supporting structure, and a key member cooperating ivthin inclined slots in the side Walls of the body portion adjacent the open end of the channel to clamp the device tov the bar or rail aforesaid.
8., As a new article of manufacture, a securing' device tor Wall-boards having a channel-section body portion and opposedly directed pairs ot stepped Wines laterally projecting' from each leg; thereof. said stepped. wings alitordingr intervals for the accomn'iodation oit aligningsheets ot Wall-board.
9. As a new article oi: manufacture, a securing device tor Wall-boards. having' a channel-section body portion and opposedly directed pairs ot stepped Wings laterally projecting;` from each leg thereof7 said stepped Wings attbi-ding intervals 'for the accommodation oi" aligning` sheets of ivellboard, and inclined slots adjacent the outer.- most Wings 'for the reception ot a clamping member whereby the device is secured. in use.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto. signed my name at Philadelphia, Pennsyl- Vania,4 this 23rd day ot February, 1923.,
EDWARD YV. DANIEL.
