BUTT HOOK Filed March 15, 1924 Zul" llll Patented Dec. 9, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATET lsiaea ries..
JAMES R. MCKAMEY AND ROBERT N. dcKiIi/EEY. F SHLANB, OREGON.
BUTT HOOK.
Application filed March 15, 1924.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES R. Moiaunr and ROBERT N. MCKAMEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Jackson and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Butt Hooks, of which the following is a Specication.
Our present invention has reference to hooks employed by loggers and commonly known as butt hooks, and our object is to simplify and improve the existing art by producing a device for this purpose characteristic of simplicity in construction, coupled with great strength and durability and which is retained in locked condition by the strain thereon.
With the above broadly stated objects in view and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference is to be had to the drawing which accompanies and which forms part of this application.
In the drawing y Figure l is a plan view of the improven ment.
Figure 2 is a similar' view with one of the plates constituting the frame removed.
Figure 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
As disclosed by the drawing, our improved butt hook comprises a frame or body `made up of two removably connected sections, each of which being similar and the same as a whole being indicated by the numeral l. The body sections are secured together by bolts which are engaged by nuts and these nuts are let in depressions in one of the body plates.
The body has its outer or hook carrying end widened and its sides gradually inclined to its opposite end. This last mentioned inner end is centrally formed with a boss-like extension which has a bore therethrough that communicates with a passage 2 in the body. The side walls of the passage 2 are iiared away from each other to the outer or hook carrying end of the body. Passing through the boss and entering the referred to passage, and babbitted or otherwise effectively secured therein there is the cable 3.
rlhe hook carrying end of the body l is centrally depressed and the wall of the said depression is curved or of arcuate formation, as indicated by the numeral 4. The passage 2 communicates with the notched serial No. 629,605.
portion 4, and at its point of communication therewith is rounded toward the sides of the body, as indicated by the numeral 5.
For distinction, the notched portion of the body will be referred to as the mouth thereof. The body.l inward of its mouth has its sides provided with crescent-shaped openings in which are received the reduced ends 5 of what l will term a bolt member 6, the body of the bolt member being crescentshaped in cross section and its concaved portion is arranged in a line with the concaved mouth of the body. Looself,7 arranged over the inner rounded portion of the bolt 6 there is the ring-like body 8 of the hook. The beak of the hook is indicated .for distinction by the numeral 9, and the split ring constituting the body thereof has its outer edge corrugated or formed with teeth, as indicated by the numeral l0. These teeth are in mesh with similar teeth on a roller 1l, the shaft 12 of which being journaled in suitable bearing openings in the members constituting the body.
rlhe split ring body of the hook is loosely arranged on the bolt and when the hook is swung to closed and gripping position the toothed edge of the body vwill contact with one of the rounded walls 5 of the passage 2, the said toothed portion being likewise engaged by the toothed roller l1. The roller 11 provides a bracing or reinforcing means for the hook. rlhe strain on the hook will prevent the accidental opening thereof, and from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the drawing it is believed that the construction and advantages of our device will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions relate.
Having described the invention, claim 1. In a device for the purpose set forth, a body having a passage therethrough and a concaved mouth at one end thereof, a crescentshaped bolt in the body of the said mouth thereof, a split ring having one of its ends formed with a hook loosely arranged around the bolt, said ring having its outer edge toothed, and a toothed roller revoluble in the body meshing with the teeth of the ring.
2. ln a device for the purpose set forth, a
the mouth thereof, said passage having its ring member and meshing therewth all :is Wells rounded at points opposite the hott7 e und'or lthe purpoee Set forth. split ring member having one end merging ln testimony whereof We n 'x our signaL 10 into a hook loosely arranged over the holt, tures.
said ring member having its outer edge toothed, and a toothed roller journaled in JAMES R. MCKMEY.
ythe passage of the body to the rea-r of the ROBERT N. MCKAMEY.
