KITCHEN-RANGE FIRE BLOWER AND SOOT CLEANER.
Application filed February 1, 1924. Serial No. 690,084.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, RILEY CULenn'rsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glezen, in the county of Pike and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kitchen-Range Fire Blowers and Scot Cleaners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in kitchen ranges and it is my principal object to provide novel means whereby a draft of air may be forced upwardly through the grate to quickly kindle a tire or to produce more rapid burning after kindling, and whereby any soot accumulating in the ovenheating flue, may be readily blown therefrom.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is substantially a central vertical longitudinal section through a kitchen range embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation showing more particularly the arrangement of the fan for producing the blasts of air.
Figures 3 and 4 are sectional views as indicated by lines 3--3 and %4 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a kitchen range having a grate 2, an oven 3, a direct draft flue 4 from the tire box to the usual smoke outlet opening 5, and an oven-heating flue which extends downwardly at 6 behind the oven 8, then extends forwardly as at 7 under said oven and finally leads upwardly as 'indicated at 8, to communicate with the opening 5. I have shown a damper 9 at the inlet end of the flue 6-7-8, for controlling the passage of smoke therethrough, and have illustrated another damper 10 at the outlet 11 of the line 4 and it will be seen that by properly regulating these dampers, the smoke from the fire may pass through the direct draft flue 4, or may be shunted around the oven to heat the latter.
The back wall 12 of the range 1 is formed with an opening 18 into the portion 6 of the oven-heating Hue and is formed with another opening 14 into the ash pit below the grate 2. A circular fan casing 15 is secured against the outer side of the wall 12 and is provided with an air discharge nipple 16 passing snugly through the opening 18 and is alsoyprovided with a. similar nipple 1T extending through the opening 14. 'The two nipples 16 and 17 are of tubular form and in them, I mount pivoted damper plates 18 and 18a respectively, said plates having operating rods 19 and 19rL which extend to the exterior of the casing 15, so that either of said damper plates may be opened.
Under the grate 2, I provide a perforated tube 20 having a closed end 21 and an open end which is snugly engaged with the nipple 17, so that any air entering said tube through said nipple will be upwardly supplied and distributed through the grate 2, to promote. rapid burning of the fire.
Within the casing 15, is a rotary fan 22 driven by speed gearing 23 and a crank 24, said gearing being located in a suitable gear casing 25 secured to the outer side of said casing 15. This last named casing may be secured to the range in any suitable manner, but I prefer to provide it with a continuous fiange 26 through which bolts or rivets 27 pass, these fasteners being also passed through the wall 12.
By properly setting the dainpers 9 and 10, closing the damper plate 18a and opening the plate 18, an air blast will be directed through the nipple 16 when the fan 22 is rotated, and this blast will effectively clean the flue 6-7-8, of any accumulated soot and the like. IVhen the damper plate 18 is closed and the plate 18a is opened, rotation of the fan will supply a forced draft to the fire to facilitate kindling or burning after the kindling operation.
I prefer to embody my improvements in connection with a range of the type shown, but it is obvious that they may be used in connection with other forms of stoves.
I claim:
A kitchen range having an oven, a grate, and a damper-controlled iiue for heating said oven, said range having an opening in one wall under said grate and another opened in said nipples for controlling the discharge of ail1 therefrom, and operating rods for said damper plates extending to the eX- teiioi' of said fan casing.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto afv fixed iny signature.
RILEY CULBERTSON.
