Description

J. s. CONNER PIANO ACTION File y 29, 1922 Patented Dec. 9, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES S. CONNER, OF BOALNOKE, ALABAMA.
PIANO ACTION.
Application filed May 29, 1922. Serial No. 564,533.
6 dolph and State of Alabama,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Piano Actions, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to piano actions and moreparticularly to improvements in bridle straps and attaching means therefor.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved bridle strap which may be used instead of the conventional form of strap or which may be used to replace a worn-out orinefficient strap.
- Another object of my invention is the construction of a strap which may be used without the tools usually required and without independent attaching means such as glue,
tacks, etc.
A further object of my invention is to construct a strap which when attached to the conventional parts of a piano action will pull against the back stop instead of pulling from the hammer butt or from the shank of the back stpp.
A still further'object is the production of a strap which may be used to replace the conventional strap and also the back stop felt when it has become worn-out or useless or has been destroyed.
With these and further objects in View, one embodiment of my invention is shown in the-accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of some of the conventional parts of a piano actionwith my improved strap attached thereto;
Figure 2 is an elevation showing another form of strap;
'Figure 3 is a plan View of-the form of strap used with the device shown in Figure l; and A Figure 4 is a plan View of the strap used with the device shown in Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a conventional hammer butt 1, having a shank 2, on which is a hammer head 3. The back stop 4 is attached to the butt by a shank 5. The whippen 6 has the usual shank! to sup ort the stop 8 and also the bridle wire 9. 6 back stop has the usual felt 10.
- plished by drawing the end of the strap havas the felt 10 shown permanently attached bridle strap having a back stop felt connect- My improved bridle strap 11, having felt 12 or any other suitabl material attached at one end, has a hole a jacent to the other end as plainly shown in Figure '3. When the usual form of strap which is permanently attached to the butt or butt shank is required to be replaced, this may be accome0 ing the hole therein through the opening 14 in the back stop. A broken or injured strap may, therefore, be readily replaced without A any tools. A piece of Wire may obviously be bent to be used by insertion inlthe hole 13 to pull the strap through the opening 14.
In the form of strap 15 shown in Figures .2 and 4, the felt "16 at one endof the strap is large enough to act in the same manner in Figure 1 to the back stop. This form of strap may, therefore, be used for two purposes; that is, to replace a broken strap and also to replace a destroyed or worn out back stop felt.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Pat ent is:
1. The combination with a piano action having a hammer butt with a back stop connected thereto, and having an opening in it, of a removable bridle strap having an opening adjacent one end for attachment to a bridle wire, said end passing through said opening in the back stop, and having a back stop felt attached to the other end thereof, said felt beingof a-size to prevent it from entering the opening in the back stop.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a
ed to one end thereof. 3. As a new article of manufacture, a
bridle strap for piano actions having a hammer butt with a back stop connected thereto,
and having'an opening in it, said bridle 96 strap having a pad of yielding material on.
one end thereof to act as aback stop felt, said pad being of suitable size to prevent the end of the strap having thg pad thereon from passing through the opening in the back stop.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JAMES 'sxoormnn.
