)i further object of the invention is the provision of a device for the accomplishment of these results, which shall be o-f very strong and durable construction, but light in weight, and in which use of frangible glass, or the like, is reduced to a minimum.
Other objects and advantages of the invention include the simplification and improvement in details of construction and manufacture, and should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the specific details of construction shown and described within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.

ln the particular work for which the present goggle is intended it is desirable that the workman wearing the same have a certain amount of lateral vision, and at the same time the sides mustbe so enclosed as to keep out flying particles, or the like. To accomplish this result I preferably cut away an appreciable lateral portion of the composition cup, as is indicated at 8, and make use of the screen closure 9 therefor, preferably of a suitable very fine mesh screen. This member is formed with a selvagge or finished edge, as at 10, and has the opposite edge as at ll cut to conform to the shape of the rear of the cup member 2.
In use the screen member having been properly cut is litted around the exterior of the cup with the selvage l0 abutting the shoulder fl and making a neat joint therewith, the ends of the screen membelI overlapping and being pierced by the staple connection 3 which serves to securely attach the screen member around the goggle, as should be best understood by reference to Figures III and V.
In order that the protector may best and most comfortably fit the face and at the same time to cover ovei` the raw or cut edge ll of the screen material, I preferably provide the finishing channel member l2 in the form of a drawn up ring, or the like, of the same composition material as the cup itself, this member being initially drawn u in ring like formation, the opening of the c iannel being sutliciently large to receive both the screen 9 and eye cup 2, as shown in Figure III, and being bent to the edge configuralll) tion of the cup 2. Having been placed in position the ring is preferably both cemented and pressed, as by heated dies, to cause it to tightly clamp against the eye cup on the one side and firmly adhere thereto to resist any loosening thereoi, and on the other side to tightly bind against the screen thus firmly securing it in place and prevent any possible loosenin thereof.
If desired to Jfurther aid in retaining the screen in position, hollen7 or other rivets such as lli may be employed, piercing both the cup and the encircling screen and securing`said parts together.
*rom the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a practical, inexpensive and durable eye protector construction, in which the composition cupmembers serve to secure and retain the lenses in place and the doubled composition rear edge protecting portion provides a soft and satisfactory tace engaging member for the protector, and at the same time serves to secure in place the screen covering for the lateral windows or visual apertures of the device.
I claim:
l. In a device of the character described, the combination with composition eye cups each having a lateral window, of a screen encircling each cup and forming a protection Yfor the window, a composition channel rim overlying the rear edge of each cup and screen and pressed into clamping engagement therewith to secure the parts together, the screen member having its ends overlap ping at the inner side of the cup, and a bridge between the two cups having fastening portions extending through the screens and eye cups to secure said parts and the bridge together in a unitary article oi' manufacture.
2. As an article of manufacture, an eye protector comprising a composition eye cup having an outwardly extending peripheral lens engaging shoulder and an adjacent lens receiving channel, a lens engaging said channel against one side of said shoulder, said eye cup havin@ a lateral window, a screen member encirc ing the cup and iitting behind the outer portion of the shoulder, the screen member overlying and providing a closure for the window, a composition channel rim overlying the rear edge of the cup and screen member and cemented in clamping engagement therewith to secure the parts together.
