UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARNULFO MENDOZA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASS IGNOR TO F. R. G. CORPGRATION, OF NEWARK, NEWJERSEY, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE FOUNTAIN TOOTHBRUSH.
Application filed February a, 1922. Serial no. 535,002.
To all whom it may concern-:-
Be it known that I, ARNULFO MnNnozA, a citizen of Mexico, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain Toothbrushes, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in fountain tooth brushes, such as set forth in my copending application Serial No.
484.749, filed July 14, 1921.
. The primary object of this invention is the provision of a fountain tooth brush having several detachable parts forcconvenient arrangeme'nt to sterilize the same, and without excessive waste of dentifrice.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a fountain tooth brush of the above described-character, including a supporting handle structure provided with a channel therein, and having a detachable connecting piece for fastening nozzles of dentifrice containers, whereby dentifrice may be fed directly into the bristles of the improved tooth brush, to permit sterilizing of the tooth brush, and without excessive waste of dentifrice.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a connecting piece in an im-- proved tooth brush of the above described character, and which connecting piece is adapted for receiving various sized nozzles of dentifrice containers.
Uther objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, V Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross sectional view through the improved tooth brush, and showing a preferred type of connecting piece for dentifrice containers.
Fi re 2 is a perspective view of a valve mem er embodied in the improved tooth brush.
Figure 3 is a modified form of connecting piece adapted for receiving dentifrice container nozzles of various sizes.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view, showing a portion of the form of connecting piece illustrated in Figure 3, and having a container nozzle inserted therein.
Figure 5 is a transverse cross sectional view, taken on the line 5+5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a bottom plan view of a detachablebrush head used in connection with the improved fountain tooth brush.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the letter A designates the improved tooth brush, including the supporting casing 18 for detachably receiving a brush head 0. A dentifrice container D is adapted for connection to a nozzle connecting iece E for feeding dentifrice directly into t e brush head 0.
The supporting casing B is altogether similar to that described in my copending application above mentioned, and includes the hollow handle structure 10, and shank 11. This hollow handle structure 10 preferably includes a lower section 12, rigid with the shank 11, and a hingedly connected section 13, for access to the interior 14 of the hollow handle 10, wherein the dentifrice container D is normally concealed. The shank 11 is provided with a. pocket 15 therein formed by side walls 16 and 17, a front retaining wall 18, and a rear wall 19. The seating surface 20, forming the bottom of the pocket 15 is provided with a discharge port 21 extending upwardly from the seat surface 20 having an outlet aperture 22, and adapted for insertion through the aperture 24, of the brush head C. A channel 27 substantially elliptical in transverse cross section is provided longitudinally inthe'shank 11 and communicating between the pocket 14 of the hollow handle 10, and the aperture22 in discharge port 21. It ispreferred, that this v channel 27 be straight, and-of suflicient size spect to the supporting casing B and is formed of a supporting base 28, of some hard material, sur-h, as rubber, celluloid, or the like, and receiving the tufts of bristles 29 upon the upper surface 30 thereof. The bottom surface 31 of the brush head 0, is preferably provided with a longitudinal groove 32, extending from the aperture 24 to the front 33 of the base 28, and adapted for guiding a sliding valve 34 for controlling exit of dentifrice through the d schar e port 31. A slot 35 is likewise provided t rough the base28, and extending into the aperture 24 to receive an upstanding portion 40 of the valve'34. A rear tapering depression 36 may be provided on the bottom 31 of brush head C, and communicates between the aperture 24 and the rear end 37 of base 28. ,This
. a groove 36 has been provided to receive an upwardly projecting portion on the seating surface 20 of shank 11, necessitated b the peculiar formation of the channel 2 as can be seen from Figure 5.
The valve 34 is substantially of that type described in the copening application above mentioned. and includes a body strip 38 for sliding in the groove 32, and having a finger nail stem 39 extending rearwardly' through the wall 18, for lying in a depression formed in the extreme forward end of the shank 11. The stem 40 extends upwardly at right angles upon an end of the strip 38, through the slot 35 in the base 28, and which is provided with a head 41 formed at right angles thereto. The head 41 is depressed inwardly of its marginal edge to provide a depending segmental shaped portion 42, which is adapted to lock, so to speak, in the port opening 22, when the valve member is in closed position. In order to guide the valve member a long slot 43 is provided in the body 38, adapted to receive pins 44 extending upwardly from the brush seat 20.
The connecting piece E includes the tubular stem 45, preferably ell ptical in formation, and provided with the passageway 46, longitudinally thereof. This passageway 46 has an outlet47 upon 'an extreme forward end thereof, the axis of said outlet 47 extending at right angles to the passageway 46 as illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings. An enlarged head 48 is provided upon the end of the stem 45 opposite the outlet opening 47 .the same being internally screw threaded to rece ve a nozzle 49 of the dentifrice container D for detachable connection thereof.
In some instances, various sized containers D will be used in the same fountain tooth brush A, and it is desirable to supply a nozzle connecting element F for receiving various sized nozzles. To this end, the connecting element F is provided with a tubular stem 50 having a passageway-51 therein, and
outletting at the extreme forward end 52 similar to that above described for the form of nozzle conne'tion E. The stem 50 tapers outwardly, as at 53, as the same approaches the enlarged head 54 formed upon said stem 50 opposite to the outlet end 52. A resilient ring or band 55 is disposed in any preferred manner upon the interior of the enlarged head 54, and adapted to receive the nozzle 49 of a container D by detachably engaging the screw threads thereof. Due to resiliency of the ring 55, various sized nozzles may be inserted therein for detachable connection to the element F.
In operation, the hinged section 13 is thrown to open the pocket 14. A container D is next inserted in the above described manner to either of the connecting pieces E and F.- The stem of the connecting piece is next inserted in the channel 27, and due to the elliptical formation of the channel 27, there will be no liability of the stem of the connecting piece becoming inoperably arranged in the channel 27. In other words, the outlet 47 of a stem 45, of nozzle connection E must necessarily align with the exit opening 22 in dischargeport 21, when the stem 45 is inserted its full length into its channel 27. By pressing upon the collapsible container D, the paste therein will be fed throu h the stem of the-nozzle connection, direct y into the discharge port 21, where the same exits into the bristles of the brush head C. By this arrangement, the nozzle connections E or F can be readily removed, without loss of tooth paste or dentifrice, and the brush, head C and supporting casing B can be sterilized.
Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of the invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention, or the scope of the claim.
I claim: 3
A toothed brush comprising a supporting frame including a. forwardly extend ing shank portion rovided with a seat thereon and a hollow andle portion providing a chamber therein, said shank rtion having a channel extending th ret rough outletting at one end in the cl..unber of said handle and at its opposite end upon the seat of said shank, a brush head for detachable connection upon said seat provided with a rt. therethrough in alignment with the out et end of said channel, and a nozzle includinga relatively long tubular stem defining a passageway therein and having an outlet opening thereon at its forward end, the axis of which is at right angles to the axis of the passageway of said tubular por- 'tion, said nozzle having the rear end thereof circumferentially enlarged for the detachable reception of the nozzles of various sized dentifrice containers, said nozzle adapted to have its relatively long tubular stem inserted in said channel from the chamber of l the handle of said tooth brush frame with the outlet oglening thereof in direct alignment with t e port in said brush head, a dentifrice container when detachably connected to the nozzle connection adapted to be disposed within the chamber of said handie so that upon collapsing of the same 'dentifrice may be fed through the tubular stem of said nozzle into the bristles of said brush head.
'In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
